MOORE, Charles C.  (1909 - 1953)

Engineer Moore Dies At Wheel Of Fire Engine; Rites Set Today
A McMinnville fire department engineer, veteran of more than a quarter of a century of service with the volunteer unit and as a full-time employee, was fatally stricken Tuesday afternoon at the wheel of one of the city’s engines as it was making a test run to a school.  Charles C. Moore, widely known city employee and leader in veterans affairs in Warren county, was pronounced dead on arrival at Medical Clinic where he was rushed only moments following the attack which occurred on Smithville Road. His death was attributed  to coronary thrombosis.  He had suffered from a slight heart ailment for some time.  The gripping incident during the moments following the engineer’s attack will be recorded in the annals of McMinnville history as one characterized by cool-headed operations by volunteer fireman aboard the truck in the face of impending tragedy.
The tragic incident occurred in the following manner:   During Tuesday members of the fire department had been engaged in the customary annual test runs to McMinnville schools as a part of the local observance of Fire Prevention Week.  Only a short while previous to the fatal run, Engineer Moore had driven the fire  engine on a second test call to Central High School.  He appeared in High spirits and rather proud that a full minute was clipped from the time of a run made to the big high school earlier in the day.  The call which was being answered at the time of the fatal attack was to Northside School, where the department annually tests water pressure since the fire hydrant is the most rural of any in the city water supply network.  Aboard the truck with Engineer Moore were Firemen, Bobby Stubblefield, George M. Beaver, Everett Brock, Jr., and Jim Durham.   As the truck reached the vicinity of the home of Mrs. J. A. Roberts, firemen noticed the peculiarity that the truck took a sudden decrease in speed.  Looking around Fireman Stubblefield noticed the engineer slump in the drivers seat.  On impulse, he (Stubblefield) grabbed for the steering wheel of the big engine and with one hand around the shoulder of the stricken man and another on the steering wheel of the engine, he held the vehicle in the road until firemen could come from the rear platform to the front of the engine and apply the brakes. Miraculously, the vehicle was steered to safety.  Engineer Moore was loadid into the waiting automobile of Fireman Chick Brown and rushed to the local clinic where he was pronounced dead.  He never rallied from the heart seizure.
Shocked to learn of the tragic death of the veteran fireman, Chief D. L. Davies on behalf of the fire department, paid this tribute to Entineer Moore: “ In the shocking death of Charlie Moore, the McMinnville Fire Department has lost one of its most experienced members and faithful servants. For more than 25 years, he served with honor as both a volunteer fireman and a full-time engineer. His judgement in occasions where quick thinking was necessary was unquestioned, his devotion to duty was the high mark in his life of service to the municipal government. The place which he held as one of our most respected members will not be an easy one to fill.”
The Veteran fireman was a Warren county native, born September 23, 1909. He was a son of Charlie Moore and Cynthia Alice Watkins Moore and he was educated in the public schools of the city and county.  During World War II,  Mr. Moore served with the U.S. Army for a period of almost two years and since his discharge from the service in 1945, he had been considered one of the veterans leaders in the county. As a prominent figure in the Veterans of Foreign Wars organization, Mr. Moore had served both as commander of Post 5064 and as “Seam Squirrel” (president) of the Military  Order of the Cootie.  He was also a member of Post 173 of the American Legion.  He was married in 1929 to Miss Maude Allen, who survives.  Mr. Moore was first employed by the fire department in 1929 as an engineer, but had previously been affiliated with the department as a volunteer fireman.  His service to the department in one or the other categories had been continuous since that time.  Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Miss Ruby Moore, a student at Howard College, Birmingham, Ala., and a son, Charles Thomas Moore, currently enrolled in specialized National Guard training at Ft. Knox, Ky.  Also one brother, Ellis Moore, McMinnville, and three sisters, Mrs. Laura Chapman and Mrs. Otis Gribble, McMinnville, and Mrs. John Robert Cass, Nashville. Funeral services will be held this (Thursday) afternoon at 4 o’clock at the chapel of High  Funeral Home.   Revs.  C. B. Smith and H. Curtis Erwin will officiate and burial will be in Mt View cemetery. Pallbearers will be (active) Chief D. L. Davies, Asst. Chief J. A. Mullican, Capts. Cecil Justice and H. D. Mitchell, Engineers,  John Lyle, Doyle Hillis and Thurman Thaxton, and Bobby Stubblefield, of McMinnville Fire department. All other members of the fire department will serve as honorary pallbearers. Military rites at the grave will be conducted by the VFW - American Legion burial squad.
