MEAD, EBEN G.  (ca 1824 - 1908)

Mr. Eben G. Mead died at his home one mile south of town, Tuesday afternoon, after an illness of several days. He was in the 84th year of his age and had been a resident of this place for many years. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and a ruling elder in that body. The burial occurred in Riverside cemetery Wednesday afternoon, funeral services being held in the Presbyterian Church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. B.A. Pendleton, assisted by Rev. Wm. M. Anderson of Nashville.

MEAD, JANE BATES MCGUIRE  (1824 - 1895)

Death of Mrs. R. Mead
Mrs. Jane B. Mead, wife of Mr. Romeyn Mead, died at their home in this place 6:15 o'clock Tuesday morning, Dec. 3rd in the 72nd year of her age, after an illness of several weeks. Dr. G.T. Stainback was summoned from his home at Dyersburg, Tenn., to conduct the funeral service, which occurred at 2:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. Mead was born at Eastport, Me., March 12, 1824, and was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bates Beckford. In 1846 she was married to Mr. Thomas McGuire, a sea captain, and accompanied him on all his voyages up to the time of his death in 1868. Six children were born to them, only one of whom, Col. John G. McGuire survived her. The death of her husband occurred at sea when she took charge of the vessel and safely navigated it to New York, for which she received a vote of thanks and a handsome reward from the Board of Underwriters of New York. In 1872 she was married to Mr. Romeyn Mead, and the moved to McMinnville, where they have since resided, Mr. Mead surviving her. Mrs. Mead was a faithful and consistent member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, being very active and enthusiastic in church work when her health would permit. After a long, eventful and useful life she has gone to a christian's reward.

MEASLES, Audrey Yates  (circa 1921-2000)

             McMinnville resident and Van Buren County native Audrey Yates Measles, 79, died unexpectedly March 23 at her home. A homemaker and employee of Spinlon in Sparta, she was a  member of Doyle First Baptist Church.The daughter of John Taylor and Melba Novella Johnson Yates,  she was preceded in death by brothers, Murphy Leaton and Rayburn Yates; and sister, Vernie Lorine Yates.She is survived by a son, Jimmy Ralph Measles of Sparta; daughter, Florence Measles Powell of Hopkinsville, Ky.; 6 grand- children, Barney Davis Jr., Lois Pryor, Clifford Davis, Tina Sims, Rebecca Kress and Clifford Measles; 14 great-grandchildren, Joshua Pryor, Melody, Brady, Casey, Cliff, Ethan and Max Davis, Sarah and Ashley Pryor, Mindy Womack, Chelsa and Taylor Sims, Sabrina Kress and Emily Davis; 5 brothers, Ernest Yates of Osark, Mo., James Yates of Rock Island, Robert Yates of Sun City, Ariz., Clarence Yates of Birmingham, Ala., and Carl Yates of Washington; two sisters, Melba Bouldin and Catherine Barnes, both of McMinnville. Services were held Saturday at High's Chapel with Jerry Barnwell and Ron Noffisinger officiating. Burial followed at Laurel Creek Cemetery. High Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MELTON, Berlie Orange  (circa 1919-1998)

Berlie Orange Melton, 79
                   Grundy County native and Murfreesboro resident Berlie Orange Melton, 79, formerly of McMinnville, died suddenly May 23 in a tractor accident at his residence.  A retired real estate agent, formerly in the construction business, he attended the University of Tennessee and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member of First Methodist Church in Murfreesboro.  He was the son of M.R. and Katie Shaver Melton.  He is survived by his wife, Fay Melton; two sons, David Melton of Wisconsin and Robert Melton of Pulaski, Ga.;  one daughter Linda Harrell of Florida; two step daughters, Fay Church of Hyattsville, Md. and Margaret Madewell of Murfreesboro; four sisters, Jewell Taylor of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Clara Dodd of Jamestown, Gladys Cadle of Florida, and Robbie Beaver of McMinnville; one brother, Marvin Melton of Deland, Fla.; and 18 grandchildren.  Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at High Funeral HOme Chapel with burial to follow at Mt. View Cemetery.  Visitation will be held Monday from 2-7 p.m. and Tuesday fro 10 a.m. until time of service.  High Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

MELTON, David  (1919-1949)

Cannon Farmer Killed In Wreck Near Gassaway
            The wreck of an automobile near Gassaway in Cannon county late Sunday night claimed the life of David Melton, 30, Cannon county farmer, who was apparently killed instantly when the car ran off an embankment, turning over several times.  Reports stated Monday that the youth was pinned beneath the car after it had plunged off of the road and overturned about ½ miles south of Gassaway on the Woodbury road. The accident, it was stated, occurred about 11 o'clock Sunday evening.  The deceased youth's father told the Standard Monday that his son and "a Mahaffy boy" were riding in a '37 Plymouth automobile with Oscar Davis owner and driver of the car. The other two occupants were uninjured. Young Melton was believed to have died of chest injuries when the car overturned on his body. A wrecker was required to move the vehicle off the youth's body.  David Melton, native of Cannon county, was a son of Cless Melton and Media Fuston Melton and was born February 19, 1919. He was educated in the schools of Cannon county and attended Woodbury high school. He had been engaged in farming with his father at Short Mountain during the past several years.  He is survived by his parents. Funeral is services were conducted Tuesday aftenoon at 2 o'clock at the Tucker's Chapel Methodist Church. John W. High officiated and burial was in the Grizzell cemetery at Short Mountain, Cannon county. Arrangements by High funeral Home.

MELTON, Delter (1884 - 1953)

D Melton, Dies Of Heart Attack; Rites Set Today
               Delter (D) Melton, 69, McMinnville café operator for almost three decades, died unexpectedly at his North Spring street home Tuesday morning at 7:30 o’clock as a result of a heart attack. Mr. Melton was stricken on the back porch of his home as he was carrying in coal and wood. Although in ill health for almost two years, he had been unusually well for the past several weeks, members of the family said.  A victim of a heart attack in January 1952, Mr. Melton remained in a serious condition for several weeks, however he rallied and had been progressing nicely in recent months.  He died almost instantly of the Tuesday morning attack.  Funeral services will be held today (Thursday) at 2 p.m.  At Central Church of Christ. Allen Phy, minister of Union City Church of Christ and former Central minister, will officiate and burial will be in Mt. View cemetery.  Mr. Melton was a native of Cannon county, born at Rock House July 30, 1884. His parents were France Melton and Melissa Gunter Melton and he was married to Miss Eliza Blair July 22, 1906. The Melton family moved to McMinnville in 1918 and for a period of 27 years operated a café on North Spring Street. Mr. Melton was also engaged in the fur buying business for several years and at one time was a candidate for Tax Assessor of Warren county. Both he and Mrs. Melton had been retired for the past year.  Mr. Melton was a member of Central Church of Christ.  He is survived by his wife; three sons, Clarence L. Melton, Smithville; Del Melton, Jr., Paducah, KY., and Ray W. Melton, Nashville; one brother, John R. Melton, Woodbury;  and three sisters, Mrs. Maude Francis and Mrs. Sue Higgins, Woodbury, and Mrs. Jessie Blair, Corsicana, Texas.  High Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MELTON, George   (1878-1950)

George Melton Dies Suddenly Of Heart Attack.

        George Melton, 12th district farmer died suddenly of a heart attack at his home Saturday at one o'clock.  Funeral services were held at Blues Hill Cumberland Presbyterian Church Sunday by the pastor Rev. F. L. Watson.  Burial was in Blues Hill Cemetery.  Survivors are two sons, Clyde Melton of Muncie, Ind., and Grady Thomas Melton of Alexandria; seven daughters, Mrs. Frank Henegar, Mrs. Haskel Smith and Miss Ruth Melton, all of Warren county; Mrs. Edward Sneed of Milton; Mrs. Bill Underwood of Detroit; Mrs. James Allison of Woodbury and Mrs. Sam Brady of Nashville; four brothers, Alex Melton of Waxahachie, Texas and Will, Zeke and Cles Melton, all of Warren county.  Mr. Melton was born in Cannon county March 11, 1878, the son of the late David and Parale Vandergriff Melton.  He was a member of the Presbyterian church.

MELTON, George Ernest  (1878-1950)

Geo. E. Melton Aged Farmer Dies Suddenly
          George Ernest Melton, 72-year old Blues' Hill farmer, died suddenly at his home Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock . Death was attributed to a heart attack.  Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Blues' Hill Cumberland Presbyterian Church with Rev. Frank Watson, the pastor, officiating. Burial was in the Blue Hill cemetery.  Mr. Melton, native of Cannon county, was born March 11, 1878. He was a son of David Melton and Paralee Vandegriff Melton and he was married to Miss Audie Esker Sadler, who survives. The deceased was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.  In addition to his wife he is survived by two sons, Clyde Melton, Muncie, Ind., and Grady Melton, Alexandria, Tennessee, seven daughters, Mrs. Frank Henegar, Mrs. Haskell Smith, and Miss Ruth Melton, all of this county; Mrs. Edward Sneed, Milton, Tenn. Mrs.  Bill Underwood, Detroit, Mich., Mrs. James Allison, Woodbury, and Mrs. Sam Brady, Nashville. Also surviving are four brothers, Will, Alex, Zeke and Cless Melton, and one sister, Mrs. Ella Fuston. Arrangements by High's.

MELTON, Robert Taylor  (1892-1942)

                  Robert Taylor Melton, 49, veteran of the last World War, died at his home in Dibrell Friday, following an illness of several months.  Funeral services were conducted from the Gath Baptist Church Sunday afternoon by Rev. Robert Whitlock of Smithville and Rev. W.J. Thompson of McMinnville. Burial was in Wharton Springs cemetery.  The services at the grave were in charge of the local post of the American Legion of which the deceased was a member.  Mr. Melton was born in White county December 22, 1892.  He was a son of James and Martha Biggs Melton.  He served with the United States Army during the last World War.  Arrangements by High Funeral company.

MENENTREY, Cherrie Louise  (circa 1946-1952)

Child Fatally Injured As Car Hits Gravel, Overturns
A six-year-old child was killed, its mother and three-year-old brother injured Wednesday when a car, driven by the mother, skidded in loose gravel and overturned on the outskirts of a California town.  Instantly killed in the accident was Cherrie Louise Menentrey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Menentrey of Marianna, Calif., and granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. C.L. Cherry of Rock Island. Mrs. Menentrey is the former Miss Mary Cherry. Mrs. Menentrey and her son, George, were also injured in the crash, but not seriously. The mother, along with the fatally injured daughter, was thrown from the vehicle as it overturned twice after skidding on the loose gravel.  The young son remained inside the car and suffered only minor injuries.  The accident occurred near the city limits of Solidad, Calif.  Mrs.  Menentrey and her children were enroute to the town from their home in Marianna.  The husband of the injured woman and the father of the fatally injured daughter, James Menentrey, is a veteran of extended duty with the Army both in World War II and post-war service. He is a utility foreman in Marianna at the present where the family makes their home.
