KIRBY, Homer, JR. (circa 1938 - 1999)

Services today for Homer Kirby, Jr., 61
Family and friends are mourning the sudden loss of prominent  local realtor Homer Kirby, Jr. who died unexpectedly in  Brentwood Monday morning at the age of 61.
Services for Mr. Kirby will be held at 2 p.m. today at High’s Chapel with Charlie Pearson and Paul Roberts officiating.   Burial will follow at Mt. View Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m.  to 1:30 p.m. today at High’s.
Mr. Kirby had been a pillar in the real estate business in Warren  County since 1973, when he first combined with Hobert Lewis to open  the firm. At the time of his death, he was the broker/owner for Kirby Realty & Auction Company, one of the largest and longest-standing real  estate firms in this area.  Kirby was active with the Warren County Board of Realtors with which  he had been affiliated for many years.
One of Kirby’s three sons, Bobby Kirby, who followed him into the real estate profession, noted that his father was highly thought of by his peers in the business.  “He had a lot of respect from the board of realtors,” he said of his father. “When there was a problem, they could always go to him.”
Sally Steakley, now with Coldwell Banker Colonial Reality,  got her start in the business in 1979 with Kirby. She remained under his tutelage until receiving her license.  “He was very helpful,  knowledge- able and professional,” Steakley said.   “In real estate, everyone looks to the professional and he was a professional in every sense of the word.”  In addition to helping begin her career, Steakley pointed out that Kirby was quick to help others in the business.  “He will be very much missed,” Steakley said.
In addition to his impact on the real estate profession here, Kirby was also a long-time member of the McMinnville Exchange Club. He was a former recipient of the organization’s “Exchangite of the Year” award for his service to the club and community and was a past president of the local chapter.
Fellow Exchangite, Ken Roberts, said Kirby’s loss is a loss to the whole community.  “He was an extremely civic-minded person,” Roberts said. “He was the type of person who would do for others out of the goodness of his heart.  He’s the type of person I was proud to call my friend. He was a great guy.”
Kirby was also involved in the American Cancer Society. He was a member of the Church of Christ and also attended First Baptist Church.  Not only was Mr. Kirby respected as a businessman but in his personal life as the father of five sons and daughters who also reflect their father’s commitment to family and community.
“Anyone who met him could tell that he was a classic Southern gentleman,” said son Kent Kirby. “He was a kind-hearted person.”
His children noted that their father enjoyed golfing, bowling and an occasional game of Rook. More recently, they said, he became an avid traveler.
Kirby was the son of Homer and Nannie Hillis Kirby Sr.; and was preceded in death by his wife, Leslie Sue Quinn Kirby in 1990.  He is survived by three sons Captain Homer Kirby III, M.D., U.S. Army  stationed at Ft. Benning, GA, Kent Kirby of Nashville and Bobby Kirby of McMinnville; two daughters, Kerrie Solomon Johnson of Nashville and Lara Kirby Hildreth of McMinnville; 10 grandchildren; mother and father-in-law, Leslie and Lorella Quinn of McMinnville; and fiance, Mary Schneider of Brentwood.
