CRAIN, John Morgan  (1886-1952)

Truck-Tractor Collision Claims Life Of Farmer
A well known Warren county farmer, John Morgan Crain, died at Medical Clinic Friday afternoon at 2:50 o'clock as a result of injuries suffered the day previous when a gravel truck collided with a tractor driven by Mr. Crain on Viola Road, near his home.  Mr. Crain, member of a prominent Warren county family, suffered head   injuries when he was knocked from the tractor in the collision.  The accident occurred shortly after noon on
Thursday and involved the Crain farm vehicle and a gravel truck, owned and operated  by Ray Chastian. State Highway patrolman Ty Cobb, who investigated the accident, said both the Crain Tractor and Chastain's truck were headed in the direction of McMinnville and the crash occurred as Mr. Crain apparently turned from his home located 2 miles southwest of McMinnville on highway 108.   The tractor, patrolman Cobb said, was almost completely demolished. The truck, which was loaded with crushed rock at the time of the collision, was also damaged  but the driver, Mr. Chastain, was not injured.  Mr. Chastain, at the time of the accident was engaged as a contract hauler for Warren Limestone Co., the officer said.  A native of Warren county, Mr. Crain was born August 25, 1886.  He was a son of Jerry Crain and Maggie Rust Crain and he was married to Miss Josephine Bost, who died 23 years ago.   Mr. Crain had been engaged in farming in Warren county all of his life and was also a livestock trader.  Survivors include one son, Jerry Crain, McMinnville; a daughter, Mrs. James C. McGee, McMinnville; four brothers, O.T. Crain, Nashville, Jack, Jim and Bob Crain, McMinnville; one sister, Mrs. Leta Bottoms, McMinnville. Funeral services were held Sunday after- noon at 3 o'clock at Shellsford Baptist Church. Rev. John S. Trent, the minister, officiated and burial was in Shellsford cemetery. Arrangements were in charge of High Funeral Home.

CRAWFORD, Margaret Irene (1863-1942)

            Mrs. Margaret Irene Crawford, 79, died at her home on Sparta Street Saturday.  The funeral services were conducted from the residence at 4 o'clock Sunday afternoon by John W. High.  Burial was in Riverside cemetery. Mrs. Crawford, a widow of the late James R. Crawford, was born in White county, January 5, 1863.  She was the daughter of  the late James and Matina Gribble Swindell.  Survivors include one son and two daughters.  Arrangements by High Funeral Home.

[Note:  Mrs. Crawford was buried at Mt. View Cemetery, McMinnville, TN, not Riverside Cemetery, her mother was Maturia, not Matina and the surname name was spelled Swindle, not  Swindell.  She died 12 June 1942.  cgw.]


 

CRAWLEY, George Thomas  (1882 - 1953)

George Crawley, Court Member Buried Sunday
          George Thomas Crawley, 70, member of the Warren county court and well known Trousdale farmer, died at his home in the 10th district Friday morning at 11:15 o’clock. He had been in ill health for more than two years. Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 4 o’clock at Morrison Church of Christ, Vestal Chaffin, minister, officiated and burial was in Mt.View cemetery.  Mr. Crawley, native of Warren county, was born December 10, 1882.  He was a son of George Washington Crawley and Lou Jones Crawley and he was married to Miss Flora Bell Edwards June 2, 1902. She survives.  A lifelong resident of the Trousdale community, Mr. Crawley had been a member of the County Court from the 10th district since 1947. He was a member of the Chruch of Christ and operated a farm at Trousdale until ill health forced his retirement.  Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Leonard Crawley, McMinnville, and Williard J. Crawley, Morrison. High Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

CRIM, Charles Edward  (circa 1931-1999)

Charles Edward Crim, 68
              McMinnville resident and Warren County native Charles Edward Crim, 68, died March 19 at his home after an  extended illness.  A retired Carrier Corporation employee and a member of McMinnville Cumberland Presbyterian Church, he was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of VFW Post 5064.  The son of the late Charles Edward and Bobbie Lee Barrett Crim, he was preceded in death by one sister, Nellie Romans.  He is survived by his wife, Maggie Lee Fisher Crim; daughters and sons-in-law, Annette and Paul Watson and Brenda and Phillip West, all of McMinnville; son and daughter-in-law, Ralph and Edna Crim of McMinnville; sisters, Maureen Simpson and Lucille Young, both of Nashville; one brother, George Crim of McMinnville; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.   Services will be held at 2 p.m. today at McMinnville Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. B.J. Hancock officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. View Cemetery with military graveside rites administered by VFW Post 5064 and American Legion Post 173. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of service today at McMinnville Funeral Home.  McMinnville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

CRIMM, Cora Duncan  (1889-1952)

Rites Wednesday For Mrs. Crimm
                 Mrs. Cora Duncan Crimm, wife of Levi Crimm, retired Yager farmer, died unexpectedly at the Crimm home Monday afternoon at 5:15 o'clock. She had not been ill previously. Her death was attributed to a heart attack. She was 62.  Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the chapel of High Funeral Home. John W. High officiated and burial was in Bethlehem cemetery.  A native of Sullivan county, Tenn., Mrs. Crimm was born January 13, 1889.  She was a daughter of James Epperson and Mary Duncan Epperson and she was married to Mr. Crimm December 24, 1911. The Crimms have made  their home in Warren county for a number of years.  Mrs. Crimm was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian church.  Survivors in addition to her husband, are one son, Sam Crimm, Tullahoma; five daughters, Mrs. Jack Lord, McMinnville, Misses Nancy and Patricia Crimm, McMinnville, Capt. Bess Crimm, Army Nurse Corps, Ft. Lewisburg. Also one sister, Mrs. Wilson Allen, McMinnville.  Arrangements were by High's.

CRIM, John Breckenridge  (1883-1984) 

Born 101 years ago Oct. 4 in Warren County, John B. Crim, Jr. succumbed to a 3 month illness in River Park Hospital at 12:20 a.m. Monday.  A demolitionist by trade he was a member of the Church of Christ and a son of John B. (Breckenridge) and Louisa Martin Crim.  Mr. Crim was married to the former Hallie Green who preceded him in death Mar. 19, 1981.  Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Nannie L. Hughes; two sisters, Mrs. Lou Gribble and Mrs. Jessie Emler; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Armenta Crim, all of McMinnville, five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.  Doris Hughes conducted funeral services in High's Chapel, the funeral home in charge, at 3:00 Tuesday.  Interment was in Union Cemetery on Spencer Hwy.

CROUCH, Alton  (1883 - 1953)

Veteran Officer Dies Of Illness
            Alton Crouch, veteran law enforcement officer, died at Medical Clinic Saturday morning at 5 o'clock, following an illness of three months. He was 68.  Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Mt. Zion Methodist Church. Rev. C.B. Smith, local Methodist pastor, officiated and burial was in Mt. Zion cemetery. Mr. Crouch, a Warren county native, was born June 24, 1883.  He was a son of S.M. Crouch and Margaret Hannah Conn Crouch and he was married to Miss Prudence Christian. She survives.  Mr. Crouch had long been identified with law enforcement circles in Warren county, serving under several sheriffs as deputy sheriff and for some time he was a member of the McMinnville police force. For the past seven years he had been a guard at the State penitentiary in Nashville. He was a member of the Methodist Church. In addition to his wife he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Morris Womack, Muncie, Ind., and a half sister, Mrs. Mattie Todd, Texas. Arrangements were by High Funeral Home.

CROUCH, Gertie Ann Gilley  (1877-1952)

Mother of Local Businessman Dies; Rites Wednesday
                  Mrs. Gertie Ann Crouch , mother of Ernest Crouch, McMinnville druggist, civic and church leader and president of the Tennessee Board of Pharmacy, died Monday morning at 6 o'clock at Faulkner Springs hospital, following an illness of three years.  She was 74.  Funeral services were conducted Wednesday morning at 6 o'clock at the chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Rev. William H. Moss, pastor of Winchester Methodist Church, and Rev. R. L. Benton, local Methodist pastor, officiated and burial took place at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Nashville.  Mrs. Crouch, a native of Warren county, was the widow of Henry N. Crouch. She was born September 3, 1877, the daughter of Isaac Gilley and Ann Anderson Gilley and she was married to Mr. Couch in 1894. He passed away in 1941. A lifelong member of the Methodist Church. Mrs. Couch was active in Church work until she became ill. While she had made her home in Nashville for several years, she had resided in McMinnville for the past few years.  In addition to her son here, she is survived by two other sons, Gilliebrew Crouch, Oak Ridge, and H. N. Crouch, Winchester; two daughters, Mrs. A. A. Perry and Mrs. Ernestine Gardner, Nashville; three sisters, Mrs. Lela Jacobs, Murfreesboro, Mrs. Nancy Mullican, Birmingham, Ala., and Mrs. Icie Summers, Nashville. Also 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Arrangements were by Love-Cantrell Funeral Home.

CROUCH, Jay Peay  (circa 1910-1952)

Ernest Crouch's Brother Dies
             Jay Peay Crouch, 42, World War II veteran and brother of Ernest Crouch, McMinnville druggist, civic and church leader, died in Thayer VA hospital, Nashville, Sunday afternoon, following an illness of four months. Funeral services were held Monday morning at 10 o'clock at Wood Funeral Home, Nashville, with Rev. E.P. Anderson, associate pastor of Belmont Methodist church, officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Memorial Park in Nashville. Mr. Crouch, a native of Alabama, had lived in Nashville for 12 years where he was sales representative for the Sergeant-Gerke Paing Company. He had previously held a position with Sears-Roebuck Company in Tennessee, Alabama and Florida. During World War II, Mr. Crouch served with the U.S. Marines and he was a member of the American Legion and Doric Lodge of Nashville. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and a Shriner.  He was a member of the Belmont Methodist Church. Surviving, in addition to his brother are his widow, Mrs. Lenore Birdwell Crouch, Nashville; two sons and a daughter; his mother, Mrs. Gertie A. Crouch of McMinnville; two sisters and two other brothers.

CROUCH, Laura Rogers  (circa 1906-1951)

Rites Held For Mrs. Crouch, 45
                  Mrs. Laura Rogers Crouch, 45, died in a Davidson county hospital Tuesday,
April 17, at 11 o'clock, following an illness of Several years.  Funeral services were conducted last Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at the chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home with R.T. Harding officiating. Burial was in Mt. View cemetery. Born and reared in Warren county, Mrs. Crouch was a daughter of the late Will Rogers and Mrs. Belle Tosh Rogers. She was a member of the Church of Christ.  Survivors include her husband; two sons, O. J. and W. E. Crouch, McMinnville; five daughters, Mrs. Lucille Fairclaugh, Mrs. Verna
Spencer, both of Illinois, Mrs. Annie Queen, California, Misses Dorothy and Dean Crouch, McMinnville. Also three brothers, Otis, Rufus and Willie Rogers, all of Smartts.  Arrangements by Love-Cantrell Funeral Home.

CROWDER, Corra Estelle  (circa 1901-1998)

                Campaign resident and LaFayette native Corra Estelle Crowder, 97, died May 22 at her home after an extended illness.  A teacher and minister and a member of the Church of God, she was the daughter of the late Clay and Minnie Belle Josephine York Walton, and was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence C. Crowder, in 1993 and one daughter, Christine Robinson, in 1977.  She is survived by three daughters, Hilda Kemp of Goodletsville, Myra Allen of Atlanta, Ga., and Hazel Cox of Tolar, Texas; two sons, Fred O. Crowder of White House and Samuel W. Crowder of Mt. Juliet; 24 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren, and 36 great-great-grandchildren.  Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Love-Cantrell & Cope Funeral HOme Chapel with Ron Maurer officiating.  Burial will follow at Maple Grove in LaFayette.  Visitation begins at 4 p.m. today at Love-Cantrell & Cope.  Love-Cantrell & Cope Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
