BREWER, Minerva (1882-1885)
To the Standard.
On Friday, June 25th, 1885, at Trousdale, of bronchitis, Minervia, the little daughter of Dr. and Mrs. M. S. Brewer, aged 2 years and 11 months. On Saturday the little mortal remains that once contained the immortal, were tenderly laid away in the Brewer cemetery, to await the second coming of our blessed Savior. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. T. W. Tillman, of the Baptist church. It is with sadness and sorrow we consign our little ones to the grave -- it is hard to give them up, but we should submit to the will of Him that doeth all things well. He has taken little Minervia, as many others, from a world of sin and sorrow to a better home than this, to be an angel in heaven. Our blessed Savior, the good Shepherd, may have taken the little one to Himself on the other shore as an incentive to father, mother and friends to strive harder to gain that better land. Oh, it is hard to give her up, but our loss is her gain. Lovely Jesus, gentle lamb, in they care we submit our loving child. M.S.B.

BROWN, John G. (1815-1884)
John G. Brown was born February 3d, 1815, married to Miss Martha Biles in 1842, professed religion in August 1874 and joined the M E. Church, soon after, and died at his home in Warren county, Tenn., Sept. 4th 1884. He raised seven children, and lived to see them all grown and members of the church. It has been said by one who has studied human nature, that an honest man is the noblest work of God. John Brown's character in this respect is untarnished and his integrity unimpeachable. He lived well within his means and died out of debt. But the crowning excellency of his latter days was his experimental religion, developing in a devoted christian life. True, he came into this higher life late, and this I have reason to know, he regretted, but after he did come in, his life was beautifully consistent to its close. I knew him long and well. He was rational to the last, and talked of death as it approached without alarm; ready and will to go. We preached his funeral to a good and appreciating congregation, and then quietly laid his remains beside those of his devoted wife (who had preceded him only a few months) in the grave yard at Old Mt. Zion. Oh, how we sympathize with those doubly afflicted ones, who wept around those graves! But we are comforted. Earth has no sorrows that heaven cannot heal. A. L. Comer.
