These two lists identify the post offices of Union County Tennessee and names the Postmasters and also gives
the effective date of their appointment to that position. Most often, these Postmasters were shopkeepers
and their post offices were counters in country stores. Maynardville, the county seat, would have been
the main post office for the county. It is possible that an old manuscript postmark “Maynardville
C. H.” could exist. The “C.H. ” stands for “ Court House.”
The basis of the data presented here of the postmaster appointments is found National Archives
microfilm publications M1131 and M841. Additionally, Tennessee State Library and Archives has
extracted some data (but not the Postmaster appointments) from those microfilms.

One great source for Tennessee post office information is the book, Tennessee Postoffices and
Postmaster Appointments 1789-1984, by D. R. Frazier. It is
available in many libraries and may occasionally be found being offered for sale.
The late D. R. Frazier was an outstanding and dedicated postal historian. He lived in Dover,
Stewart County, Tennessee.
These two Union County lists use the same general layout as
found in Mr. Frazier’s book. The annotations from his book were also
included here.
