Devils' Food Cake

1 cup butter

2 cups sugar

3 squares bakers chocolate, melted

5 eggs

1 cup buttermilk

2 1/2 cups flour

1/2 tsp. salt

1 tsp. vanilla

1 tsp. baking soda, dissolved in 1 tbsp. boiling water

Cream shortening and add sugar. While creaming, add melted chocolate and mix well. Add egg yolks and beat them thoroughly. Sift flour and salt. Add alternately with buttermilk. Stir in vanilla and dissolved soda. Last fold in stiffly beaten egg whites. Frost with any desired frosting.
