Indian Fry Bread

(with Lard but not the older recipes which were only flour)

2 c. flour

2 tsp. baking powder

2 tbsp. lard

1/3 c. powdered milk

1 tsp. salt

3/4 c. warm water

Oil for frying

Mix all but lard and water.  Add 1 tablespoon of lard. Cut in until crumbly.  Add water and mix until soft dough forms.  Knead until smooth and springy in texture.  Make into 12 balls.  Melt the other tablespoon of lard and brush each ball.  Set aside for 30 to 45 minutes.  On a lightly floured board roll each ball into a 4 inch circle.  Poke a hole in center.  Fry in oil at 365 degrees until lightly browned, turning once.  Serve with butter or honey.
