Libbie Griffin Genealogist for the Doss Family Association
Estate of the said Joel Doss

There is an order dated 14 Dec. 1823 from "State of Alabama Orphans Court
Intermediate, Greene Co." ordering Boler Conner, James B. Staunton, Wiley
Staunton, William Fortson (sp?) and Elijah Moore to go to "the dwelling
house of Joel Doss dec'd on 17th of Decmber 1823* and proceed to and
appraise and divide the Estate of the said Joel Doss dec'd. among his heirs
of said Estate and make a return to the said court."  (*The year 182_ looks
like it was originally written 1820, then a 3 was penciled over in another
pen.  I think this is the date they were to appear there, and not the date
Joel died, although you could read it that way.)  This order is dated 16
Dec. 1823 and signed by Edw'd Herndon, clerk.
The above order is literally sewn onto a page which sets out the division of
the estate.  Here's what it says (each person's name is prefaced by what
appears to be Dr, which I believe means "item.")

The only other thing in the file was a receipt dated 19 Jan. 1835 signed by
Levi B. Windham, which says, "Recived of Mary Doss as guardian for Ann H.
Doss, three hundred as being the full amount due from her as guardian of
Joel Doss Dec."  I interpret this to mean that Nancy is the same person as
Ann H. Doss (Nancy was the common nickname for Ann in that period.)  I say
that because no Ann is listed above.
