Harvey L. Jones of Munford died in Covington Care Center of heart failure. Services were on Tuesday morning in the chapel of Munford Funeral Home, Interment was in Helen Crigger Cemetery in Munford.  Born in Portageville, MO., he attended public schools there and graduated from Gem City BUsiness College in Quincy, Il. He also attended the University of Memphis Law School. Mr Jones retired from Munford Union Banks in February of 1982 as executive vice president and cashier. He served as a bank director from 1947 until 1993, when he was named director emeritus. He served in the U. S. Army from December of 1843 to April of 1846 with tours of duty in the European and Pacific heaters and attained the rank of master sargeant. Mr. Jones owned an insurance agency and a real estate business. H. L. Jones Insurance merged with McGowan Insurance Company in 1983. When he moved to Tipton County in 1939, he was only the third "known" Republican. Instrumental in developing the Republican Party in rural West Tennessee, he served as chairman of the Tipton County Republican Party and was treasurer for numerous local and state campaigns. Elected as mayor of Munford in 1847, he served one term. In 1950, he was elected to the Tipton County Road Commission. In 1961, he was elected to the Tipton County Court, now the Tipton County Legislative Commission, and served until 1982. He was a member of the commission's budget and tax rate committee from 1970 to 1982. Mr. Jones was a member of the Tipton County Clean-up committee in the 1960s. It was throught the efforts of this committee that nightclubs, gambling and other illegal operations were closed. He also took an active part in the building of the new Tipton County public schools in the 1970s and early 1980s. A member of First United Methodist Church of Munford, he served as a board member for many years, as a member and chairman of the fiance and building committees and as a teacher for the Men's Sunday Schools Class for more than 25 years. He was a 50-year member of the Tipton Masonic Lodge. Mr. Jones is survived by his widow, Polly Doyle Jones, to whom he was married 50 years; a son, Dr. Riley Jones of Memphis; three daughters, Lee Jones Youngerman of Lexington, Lynn Jones Foraker of Munford and Mary Harvey Jones Gurley of Memphis, and seven grandchildren. A granddaughter, Dana Lee Youngerman, preceded him in death. The family requests that any memorials be sent to the Dana Youngerman Rodeo Scholarship Foundation, 935 Youngerman Road, Lexington, Tn., or the Munford First United Methodist Church Building Fund.
