MALONES TO BUILD--Contract has been awarded Simpson & Maxwell for a modern residence to be built for Mr.& Mrs. Irving MALONE.The house will be erected on a lot recently graded facing the highway on Mr.MALONE’s dairy farm south of Covington.

NEW RESIDENCE IN MASON--Mr.T.H.BOURNE,of Mason,has contract for the erection of a new bungalow for Miss Elizabeth ELCAN,on the property where the Mitchell residence formerly stood.

HAVE JOINED THE CIRCUS--Arnold MALEY & Jack CURRIE have left for Louisville,KY where they joined the Hagenback-Wallace circus which wintered in that city.Mr.MALEY has been connected with different circuses for some years and he has secured a position for Mr.CURRIE for the season with Hagenback-Wallace.

RIPLEY--Ches MACLIN,well-known caretaker of Open Lake,near here,made a valuable find recently.While excavating one of the numerous Indian Mounds in the section,he brought to light skeletons of gigantic mound builders ornamented with ivory beads.Pottery and other relics were also found.

LOCALS--J.E.LUNDY,of this vicinity,has been employed to assist at Ogilvie Shoe Shop.Mr.LUNDY’s father was employed many years by the late V.L.OGILVIE. --Mrs.C.B.LLOYD,of Atoka,was slightly injured in a fall while visiting relatives at Durhamville,Lauderdale County last week.An R.L.Maley anbulance carried her to her home.

RANDOLPH NOTES--Mrs.PENNOCH and daughter,Beatrice,of Iowa,are visiting her parents,Mr.& Mrs.Will STRINGHAM. --Mr.J.B.BAKER and son,H.P.,were in the storm of Monday of the 25th and were exceedingly lucky to have escaped with their lives.They were in the field working and they sought refuge in an old barn.The wind rapidly increased in velocity and the barn crashed to the ground.Although suffering from a badly mashed foot,which has since kept him confined to his home,Mr.BAKER considers himself and his son lucky.His son sustained a bruised leg but not hurt as badly as his father.

TAKE OVER STATION--Jack Carter SANFORD & Ferd R.FISHER,Jr.,have taken over the Gulf Service Station,located at the corner of West Liberty Ave and Jeff Davis Highway.

LOCALS--BORN to Mr.& Mrs.L.O.BALTZRE Wednesday,a daughter. --BORN to Dr.& Mrs.Alfred FERGUSON,of Kingston,Thursday, April 21st,a son. --Mrs.Harvey HENDRICK and baby,accompanied by Miss Mary TAYLOR,left Thursday for St.Louis,where Mrs.HENDRICK plans to retain an apartment for several weeks.Mr.HENDRICK is a member of the St.Louis Cardinals.They were driven to St.Louis by James SHELTON,Mrs.HENDRICK’s brother.

THE SICK THIS WEEK--Joseph Owen FULLER,two-year-old son of Mr.& Mrs.J.L.FULLER,of this city,is recovering from the shock and the wound experienced recently when he cut his left thumb off in a lawn mower. --Ralph,Jr.,son of Rev.& Mrs.SIMONTON,of Mt.Carmel,had the misfortune to fall and dislocate an arm Tuesday evening. --Charles COOK,young son of MR.& Mrs.Conrad COOK,of this city,fell from his father’s truck last Monday night,breaking his left arm. --Mrs.J.D.McCLANAHAN,of Gainsville,while on a visit to her daughter,Mrs.Albert WITHERINGTON,of Millington recently,had the misfortune to fall,breaking her left arm and leg.

SMITH-LEWIS--Mr.& Mrs.Mal SMITH,of this city,announce the approaching marriage of their daughter,Ernestine,to Mr.M.F.LEWIS,of Copper Hill;the marriage to take place in the summer.

COLONIAL RESIDENCE--J.A.GOODWIN,of Memphis,was given the contract this morning for the erection of a modern dewlling for Mr.& Mrs.W.C.TIPTON.This residence will replace their former home,which was destroyed by fire some weeks ago.

PERSONAL--Mrs.Sherrod SMITH was the week-end guest of her daughter,Mrs.D.A.ARNOLD,of Sardis,Miss. --Miss Mae CATES,of the Oak Grove vicinity,is visiting her sister,Mrs.Robt.ERWIN,of Ripley. --Miss Antilla GILLESPIE,of Memphis,was the week-end guest of her grandmother,Mrs.Annie HAMNER,of this city. --Mrs.Felix GREER returned to her home in this city Sunday,after a visit with her parents,Mr.& Mrs.Guy FUMBANKS,of Dyersburg. --Dr.& Mrs.Frank HILL & son,Francis,of Grenada,MS were week-end guests of her mother,Mrs.R.B.SHELTON,of this city. --Mr.Paul BELL,who is serving an enlistment in the U.S.Navy is enjoying a 30-day furlough with his parents,Mr.& Mrs.Raymond BELL,of Tabernacle.

DEATH--Mrs.Octavia Graham NORVELL,wife of Brown E.NORVELL,planter of Rosemark,died last Thursday at her home.She was 41 years old.She was a member of Idlewild Presbyterian Church.Besides her husband,she leaves a brother,Arthur GRAHAM,of San Antonio,Texas; two neices,Octavia and Jean GRAHAM; her aunt,Mrs.George LOVE,of Memphis; two cousins,Mary and Octavia LOVE; and her sister-in-law,Mrs.J.D.MARTIN,of Memphis.Burial was in Elmwood Cemetery,Memphis.Mrs.NORVELL was well known to many in Covington.Mr.NORVELL was borned and reared here,being a nephew of Mrs.W.R.GIFT,of this city.

AMONG THE COLORED FOLKS--Kizzie RHODES,a highly respected Christian woman,died at her home in the Gainsville vicinity Wednesday,April 25th.Surviving her are her husband,ten children and 16 grandchildren.

DAVIS-DAVID--Announcement is made of the recent marriage of Miss Gertrude DAVID,daughter of Mr.& Mrs.W.C.DAVID,of the Leigh’s Chapel vicinity to Mr.Harold B.DAVIS,of Memphis.The marriage occurred Saturday, April 9th.

FLATIRON NOTES--Mrs.Mary HARTGRAVES spent last Saturday with her son,Mr.Edgar HARTGRAVES,of Covington. --Miss Mabel BILLINGS,of Western Valley,was the guest of her cousin,Miss Lucille BILLINGS last week. --Mrs.Luther McKee recently spent a few days with her mother,Mrs.HENSLEY,of South Covington.

REAL COYOTE SLAIN NEAR NEWBERN--A coyote,rarely seen in this section,was killed last Friday by H.C.ASHCROFT,of near Newbern.The coyote was killing his stock.Another was killed in this section several weeks ago by A.B.RUDOLPH.

BRIGHTON NOTES--Mr.Will HINDMAN and daughters,Misses Ada Rose & Willie B.,visited relatives in Trenton last week.They were accompanied on their return trip by Mrs.Fannie TUCKER,of Harrisburg,Ark.,who will be their guest for several days.--Mr.& Mrs.O.L.TILLMAN moved last week from Curve to Brighton,where they will make their home.Mr.TILLMAN is connected with the Illinois Central Railroad. --Mr.& Mrs.J.W.TANNER escaped from probable serious injuries Saturday evening when they had a head-on collision with a Mr.LYLES,while en-route to the home of Mr.TANNER’s sister,Mrs.Butler THOMPSON,of Marianna,MS.Mr.TANNER’s two sons,Othel & James Wesley were also in the car,but escaped injuries.Mrs.TANNER received minor body bruises.

--BORN last week to Mr.& Mrs.E.M.SMITH at a Memphis Hospital,a daughter.

DAWSONS RECEIVE FRIENDS ON BIRTHDAYS--An old-fashioned dinner was the feature of a birthday dinner that was given Sunday at the residence of Mr.& Mrs.J.W.DAWSON,Jr.,in celebration of the birthdays of Mr.DAWSON and little daughter,Mary Evelyn.Among the guests were: Mr.& Mrs.W.M.GOFORTH; Mr.& Mrs.G.W.GOFORTH and children,G.W.Jr.,& Emma Katherine; Mr.& Mrs.Ammon GLASS and children,Frances,Helen and Dorothy; Mrs.Edgar JOY and children,Doris and Winifred; Mr.& Mrs.J.W.DAESON and daughter,Gladys; Misses Ruby FLEMMING & Juanita RICHARDSON; Alfred FLEMMING & Horace MONTGOMERY.

MT.CARMEL NOTES--BORN to Mr.& Mrs.Frank ARCHER,Saturday April 23rd,a son. --Virgil WHALEY was the week-end guest of his cousins,Lee & Charlie GLOVER. --Mr.& Mrs.Sam JOHNSON and children of Memphis Sunday with her mother,Mrs.REEDER of this community.

THE LEAFLETS--Mr.R.L.WILSON,of the Clopton vicinity,was quite sick all last week,but is recovering.There has been no change reported in the condition of Miss Mai McDANIEL,of Almyra. --Mr.& Mrs.Jesse SPARKS and child,Rosemark tornado casualties,were able to be moved from a Memphis hospital a few days ago.They are now at the residence of Mrs.SPARKS’ father,Mr.W.H.WHITWORTH,of Mudville. --R.S.MALEY,of Covington,was in charge of the funeral services of James ROWLAND,small son of Walter ROWLAND,who lives on the Mrs.Rosa BOND farm near Sharon.James died Sunday after a brief illness.Burial in Munford Cem.,Covington. --Mr.Russell KIRK,a former resident of Sharon,but now of the Macedonia community,enjoyed a birthday dinner at his home last Sabbath. --Mr.& Mrs.A.L.BOYD and daughter,lately of Thomasville,NC arrived last Monday as guests of her brother,Mr.Ben HARDIE,of Almyra.Mr.BOYD is expected to make his home in this vicinity in the future.

KERRVILLE NOTES--Erskine SANDERS,small son of Mr.& Mrs.Ernest SANDERS broke his arm at play recently. --Mrs.Vernon SMITH and children spent a few days with her sister,Mrs.J.E.PARR. --Theives broke into the J.D.BEAVER store at this place last Saturday night.They escaped with nothing, under heavy gunfire from the pistols of the officers.

MT. LEBANON NOTES--Mr.& Mrs.Pat ROGERS,of Miston,were week-end guests of her parents,Mr.& Mrs.G.W.McDIVITT,of this vicinity. --Miss Geraldine GILBREATH spent last week with her sister,Mrs.Coy Lee PEELER,of Rough Edge. --J.D.,small son of Mr.& Mrs.Allen POOLE,is in a Memphis Hospital receiving treatment for appendicities.

FARRIS NAIFEH DEAD--Mr.& Mrs.Richard NAIFEH and children and Mrs.N.A. NAIFEH,all of this city,left by auto last Thursday for Henrietta,Okla.,where they attended the funeral of Farris NAIFEH,of that city,which was held Sunday.The dead man was well-known in Covington.

McCLANAHAN-GRACEY--Mr.& Mrs.W.E.McCLANAHAN,of Bartlett,announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter,Katherine to George GRACEY,of this city,the marriage to take place this summer.

SMALL CHILD DIES--Ruth Christine,two-year-old daughter of Mr.& Mrs.A.N.TANNER,of Brighton,died Wednesday,after a brief illness.Interment in the Old Baptist Cemetery.

DEATH OF PIONEER CITIZEN--W.Taylor HAYNIE,84,died at his residence here Monday morning.Death was due from shock from a fall experienced but a few days prior to his death.Interment was in Munford Cemetery.Mr.HAYNIE,son of the late Dr.Lewis & Elizabeth HAYNIE,was born in the old HAYNIE residence between Covington and Brownsville.He is survived by his widow,Mrs.Minnie Neville HAYNIE,and one daughter of this union;Mrs.Walker SHOAF,of Memphis;by a former marriage he is survived by a daughter,Mrs.Carrie KYLE,of Brighton;and a son,Walter HAYNIE,of Memphis.
