PROFESSOR IN WRECK DODGING PEDESTERIAN--Prof.Norris McCORMICK,of the Brighton High School,was considerably bruised and his automobile badly damaged late Saturday night,when he attempted to avoid striking Paul VALENTINE,of Munford.The young man however was struck and seriously hurt by the McCORMICK machine.The accident occurred about one mile south of Munford at the WOOTEN place.VALENTINE is said to have arisen from a reclining position and to have stepped upon the highway in front of McCORMICK’s car.Friends of the young professor state that he thought he was being held up and swerved to the left in an effort to dodge and not run over the other man.In this attempt he failed,his car turning over in the ditch,bruising him and striking VALENTINE.The latter is now in a Memphis hospital,suffering from a broken left arm and serious fracture of the skull.He is a son of F.A.VALENTINE,of Munford.

MORE SICK--Young Robert McDANIEL,son of Rev.& Mrs.R.W.McDANIEL,of Sharon,who is attending college in Kentucky,was the victim of an auto accident crash about eight weeks ago.He was carried to a hospital,where he developed pneumonia.He was later ex-rayed and found to have a broken rib.

DEATH--Mrs.Carrie McCALL STEVENS,widow of the late Hal G.STEVENS,of Dyersburg,died in Memphis Thursday,Feb.25th.Funeral services in Dyersburg Friday,interment there.Mrs.STEVENS is well known in Covington,being the sister of the late Mrs.W.V.McFADDEN.She had for ten years preceding her death,made her home with a neice,Mrs.Harry L.PRICE,of Memphis.Mrs.PRICE is the former Miss Kathleen McFADDEN,of Covington.

HAZEL GROVE NOTES--BORN to Mr.& Mrs.Marshall LAVELLE,of Burlison,Feb.22nd,a son.In honor of George Washington,he was named George Wayne.

MARRIAGE--Mr.Gail LAWRENCE,son of Mr.& Mrs.T.J.LAWRENCE,of Holly Grove,and Miss Lena Frances HIGGINS,attractive daughter of Mr.& Mrs.Arthur HIGGINS,of Beaver,were married this week at the home of Esq.A.E.DICKEY.They were attended by a few intimate friends.The young couple will make their home in the Holly Grove vicinity.

 CARD OF THANKS--It is our sincere desire to thank our many friends,and neighbors who so kindly assisted us during the recent illness and death of Mrs.Laura LANIER.The kind offers and many unexpected ministrations of our friends were sources of great comfort to us in our trial and we shall remain very grateful for them.signed: Mr.& Mrs.Sam BURLISON.

DEATH--Mrs.W.C.PIRTLE of Mason,died at the home of her daughter,Mrs.C.L.TAYLOR,also of that place,Friday evening. Mrs.PIRTLE,who was 80 years of age on the 21st of last December,had been in declining health for sometime.Funeral services were held at the residence of Mrs.TAYLOR at 8:30 Monday morning by Rev.Frank PERRY,pastor of the Mason Christian Church.She is survived by three daughters and two sons,these being:Mrs.C.L.TAYLOR,of Mason;Mrs.Allene MARSH,of Memphis;Mrs.Joe MARTIN of Courtland,Ala.;W.T.PIRTLE of Jacksonville,Fla.;R.B.PIRTLE,of Chattanooga.

THE SICK LAST WEEK--Mayor J.A.SHELTON returned from the Touro Sanitarium at New Orleans Sunday.He will continue treatment through a Memphis clinic and the sanitarium.

--Mrs.Annie LANIER was permitted to return from a Memphis hospital.She is convalescing at the home of her father,J.P.MARSHALL,of this city.

--Patricia McBRIDE is improving steadily in the home of her parents,Mr.& Mrs.John McBRIDE.

--Little Roy,son of Mr.& Mrs.Luther McKEE,of this city,is at home after being successfully treated for a ruptured appendix in Baptist Hospital in Memphis.

--Mrs.Walter CROFFORD,formerly of this city,has suffered a breakdown,and is seriously ill at her Tulsa,Okla.,home.

--Miss Laura SALE,daughter of Dr.H.W.SALE,of this city,who sustained injuries in the DeVoy Hotel,Memphis recently,was brought to her home in this city Sunday.Her knee was fractured when an elevator in the hotel crashed for a distance of seven floors.

--Mr.Billie GWINN,of Burlison,who was recently injured in an elevator crash in a Memphis  hotel,is at home recovering from his injuries.He is a student at State Teachers College.

LOCALS--BORN to Mr.& Mrs.Harvey HENDRICK,of this city,this morning,a son,James Harvey. BORN on Feb.12th,to Mr.& Mrs.Gordon WATKINS,of Memphis,a daughter,Beverly Jean.

DEATH--Lester Grover ADAMS,of near Rialto,died suddenly Wednesday morning after an attack of pneumonia.Funeral services were conducted by Rev.E.H.HUTCHISON at Townsend Cemetery this (Thursday) morning.He is survived by his widow,two children,his parents,three brothers and two sisters.

IS DEAD AFTER BRIEF ILLNESS--J.A.PLEASANT,77,died at his home on High Street here Friday morning.Funeral services held at the residence on Friday afternoon by Rev.S.B.MORRISON,pastor of Covington Methodist Circuit.Born in Macon,TN August 7,1854,he moved here with his wife to Tipton County in early manhood,living on his farm a mile north of Covington for about 50 years.About three years ago,he moved to Covington,where he has since resided.Besides his wife,he leaves three children;Miss Lala and Messers.Charlie & Wilber PLEASANT,all of this city;four brothers,J.L.& Ben PLEASANT,both of Memphis,Crockett PLEASANT of Collierville; and Granville PLEASANT,of Macon; and two sisters,one living in Texas and one in Collierville.

STATE OPENS CASE--The State will open its case against Paul GLOVER,of Munford next Monday in  Memphis.GLOVER is alleged to have killed Burtis HATHCOCK,of Memphis,last April.The trouble is said to have risen over HATHCOCK’s treatment of his wife,who was GLOVER’s sister.

FORMER RESIDENT IS SUBJECT OF SKETCH--John K.BOYCE,formerly of Covington,but now of Armarillo.Texas,was the subject of a feature article recently appearing in a well known Fort Worth daily.Mr.BOYCE’s honors won in the World War was the subject of the writings.He entered the services as a private.He was made a Sergeant and later was promoted from Lieutenancy to a Captaincy,in the 36th Division.He was prominently connected with the success of the Aisne River engagement,at which time his regiment lost 41 officiers and 782 men.With all the officers of his outfit wounded.Lieut.BOYCE whipped the remnent into shap for action and carried out the objective.For this he was given a citation by the War Department. He was later given the Croix de Guerre with gilt star.This was awarded by Marshall PETAIN of France.About 11 days later he received the official citation from his own government. A son of W.C.& Mrs.BOYCE,for mant years residents of this city,Mr.BOYCE moved with them to Texas in 1908.He became active in business affairs of Amarillo,and since the war has been associated with many organizations,both  connected with the service and otherwise.He is married and has two children.

HOPEWELL NOTES--Mr.Martin BREWER and Miss Ruby ALLSBROOK were quietly married at the Methodist parsonage at Randolph Sunday afternoon by Rev.T.C.CALHOUN,pastor.A few near relatives were present at the ceremony.

DEATH--Mrs.Adalaide WALK,wife of George WALK,of the Bride vicinity,died in a Memphis hospital Friday night.Funeral services were held at the Halls Methodist Church Sunday morning. Interment occurred there.Both Mr.& Mrs.WALK have recently made their home with the family of Mr.Clarence WALK.

IN MEMORIUM--Sacred to the memory of Mrs.Alice GLADNEY,who departed this life March 4th,1930.-a poem-Her Loved Ones.

WAIVES TWO CHARGES--A.B.BURLISON,of the Munford vicinity,waived examination before sq.J.L.RICHARDSON on two separate charges this week.On Monday,he waived on a charge of housebreaking and larceny,he being charged with robbing the Walker Store at Atoka some time ago.He was unable to make the required $500 bond.On Wednesday morning he was again brought before Esq.RICHARDSON,the warrant charging him with second degree murder in connection with his alleged killing of George RUDD,colored,early in January.He struck the negro with his auto several miles south of Covington,the collision costing the negro his life.BURLISON also waived on this charge,also was unable to make the $500 bond and was returned to jail until next term of Circuit Court.

AGED WOMAN BURIED AT ELM GROVE CHURCH--Mrs.Laura LANIER,73,died at the home of her daughter,Mrs.Dora BURLISON,wife of Mr.Sam BURLISON,of Burlison.Feb.22nd.She had been ill about three weeks when death occurred.Interment occurred at Elm GROVE Cemetery.Besides her husband,she leaves three sons;James of Los Angeles,Calif.;Phillip,of Memphis; and Allie,of Detroit,TN.:five daughters,Mrs.Thelma FERRELL,of Sykeston,MO; Mrs.Altha DeBAKEY,of Cooter.MO; Mrs.Myrtle CROOK,of East Alton,Il; Mrs.Annie ANDERSON and Mrs.Dora BURLISON,both of Burlison;.

VETERAN DIES IN A DENVER SANITARIUM--R.Garland HENDRICK,formerly of Mason,and well-kown in Covington and Tipton County,died in a Veterans’ Hospital at Denver,Colo.,Thursday morning,Feb.25th.His death followed a pulmonary trouble of which he had been a sufferer for several months.He was 38 years old.Funeral services were held in Trinity Church in Mason Sunday,by Rev.Stanley Young,of Memphis.Interment was made with Masonic Honors at the Mason Cemetery.Born and reared in Mason,for six years prior to his death,he had been traveling in Arkansas.He went to the Colo.Sanitarium when his health failed some months since.He was a member of the Methodist Church and was an officer in the 30th Division of the U.S.Army during the World War.He is survived by his widow,Mrs.Lois Mitchell HENDRICK;one son,R.Garland HENDRICK,Jr.,aged 8 years;his parents,Mr.& Mrs.R.T.HENDRICK,of  Mason; and two brothers,W.B.HENDRICK,of Memphis and Harvey HENDRICK,of Covington.

ONE NEGRO DEAD IN RESTAURANT SHOOTING--Jim GARDNER,colored,of Dyersburg,is dead and Howard (Red) BERNARD,also colored,of Covington,is in Memphis General Hospital as a result of a shooting escapade Sunday afternoon.The battle occurred at the Northside Pig Stand,operated by Walter TOOLE,colored.The end of TOOLE’s finger was shot off by a flying bullet;Emerson(Lasses)BUTLER,colored,employed by Shelton Motor Company,was shot through the hand as he entered the door.Lasses didn’t enter the door after being shot.Officers state that the Dyersburg negro had been warned by BERNARD to stay away from his wife.He is alleged to have tried to drag her from the picture show one night last week.Both negroes were on the lookout for each other,and when they met at the eating place they opened fire.There is some question as to which fired the first shot,but officers stated Monday that there would be no prosecution of the Covington negro.GARDNER was shot under the heart and died almost instantly.BERNARD was shot in the shoulder and side and is said to be in fair condition.He is an employee of the Dennis Motor Company

BURIED IN RIPLEY WEDNESDAY--A.U.GIVEN,a former resident of this city,died suddenly of heart failure at his Elizabethton home Monday afternoon.With him at the time was Mrs.GIVEN,her mother,Mrs.S.L.HAMPTON,and three of his children;Robert A., Phillip and Joe GIVEN.Funeral services were held at the Ripley Methodist Church Wednesday,interment occurring there.The body was accompanied from Elizabethton by Mr.& Mrs.A.U.GIVEN,Jr.Mrs.GIVEN was detained at her home because of the illness of her son,Joe,who has been suffering from scarlet fever.The members of the family who were present in Ripley were: Mr.& Mrs.A.U.GIVEN,Jr.,Mr.& Mrs.W.M.GIVENS and Mr.& Mrs.James BOYD,the latter is the former Miss Mary Katherine GIVEN.Mr.GIVEN,while a resident of Covington made many warm friends in this section.An engineer,he built and supertintended many roads in this section.

PATROLMEN CHARGE SMITH WITH FORGERY--Verble SMITH,who lives three miles west of Covington,was arrested Thursday of last week on a warrant charging him with violation of the state auto license law.The arrest was made by Patrolman Homer JOHNSON and Sam JOHNSTON,of Ripley and Traffic Officer T.HARBOUR,of Covington.Credit for picking out the spurious license goes to Officer HARBOUR.

FINE GIN BURNS--The $30,000 gin of V.W.BRINGLE Gin Company,of Gift,was totally destroyed by fire at midnight Wednesday.Origin of fire unknown.

CHICKEN THIEVES ACTIVE--Thieves visited the BLANKENSHIP & YOUNT farms in this vicinity on Monday night.About 20 chicken were stolen from Joe CHUMLEY and 15 from Mike WILSON.

POLITE HOLDUP MEN LEAVES VICTIMS $5.00--James G.BADDOUR,of Covington,enjoyed an experience entirely noval to him while in St.Louis,MO last week.He was a member of a party of seven men who were held up by five polite and solicitious robbers in the Hotel Majestic.Others were:Edward,Alex,Jack and Willie HOMRA,of Tiptonville, Harry HADDAD of Munford and Robert GAZELLE,of Okla.The seven merchants were lined up face to the wall,a total of $253 was taken.Alex HOMRA engaged the hold-up men in conversation,asking them to “leave us $5 for breakfast.” And most interesting of all is that when the men freed themselves from the bathroom,they found a $5 bill on the table held secure by the water bottle.The thieves were not caught.

ON RIPLEY CONTRACTS--Paul FORTNER,contractor,of this city,has been doing much work in Ripley in the past several weeks.He has recently completed a modern brick bungalow for Dr.V.W.YATES and is now building an attractive six room frame cottage for Mr.& Mrs.Jake KLUTTS,also of that city.

TOURCH BANDITS LEAVE FOR THE PENITENTIARY--Ending their long stay in the Shelby County jail,John ASHER,Preston COPELAND, W.F.JOHNSON and Chester PRYOR left Thursday morning for Nashville to begin their terms of not more than five years for the parts they played in the Barretville murder case.

LOCALS--Born Friday,February 26th,to Mr.& Mrs.George WELLER,of Memphis,a son,Charles III .Mr.WELLER is a son of Archdeacon Charles K.WELLER,also of Memphis. --

Mr.Jesse J.WITT,of Miss.,who for several years was a mail carrier here,died recently after an illness of several months.The body was taken to Ecru,Miss.,for burial.His widow and eight children will make their home in that city.

Mrs.Kate SIMPSON and son,Mr.James SIMPSON,who have been making their home in Covington for the past several years,moved this week to their old home in the Salem neighborhood.

The infant son of Mr.& Mrs.Morris GLENN,of Memphis died in a hospital there Thursday might,March 10th.The body was brought to Covington for burial,services and interment in Munford Cemetery,Rev.S.B.MORRISON conducting the services.The infant is a grandchild of Mr.& Mrs.J.E.GLENN,of this vicinity.

-Miss Sarah KING,of this vicinity,expects to return to the University of Tennessee,at Knoxville,next week.She will resume her studies,interrupted in February of last year by illness and expects to get her degree next August.

The residence of Dr.B.R.SELDON,colored,located near the Greer store in the northwest part of the city,was totally destroyed by fire about 2 a.m.Wednesday.The fire was far advanced when the family awakened,and although all escaped unhurt,no household furniture was saved.The local fire department was not notified until the home was practically destroyed,and did not turn on its pumper,no adjoining property being endangered.

PERSONAL--Mrs.J.Thomas DELANCEY is in St.Louis,MO for a visit of several weeks with her sister,Mrs.Earl R.LUSK.

Miss Lizzie GREEN,of Las Cruces,N.M. arrived yesterday for a brief visit with the family of her brother,W.H.GREEN,of this city.

Mrs.Dan FYFE,of Corinth,Miss.,arrived last Thursday for a visit with her mother,Mrs.Minnie BAXTER,of this city.

Mrs.Guy HAEWOOD and son,Guy,Jr.,of Milan,have been guests of her parents,Mr.& Mrs.W.H.BAILEY,of this city.

--Mr.Luther FREDRICKSON,late of Covington and now in charge of Panola County,Mississippi road working machinery,spent last Sunday with his parents,Mr.& Mrs.Jeff FREDRICKSON.

--Mr.Newman GREEN left Monday for Little Rock,Ark.,where he will visit for several days before returning to his home in Las Cruces,NM. Mr.GREEN has been guest of his brother,W.H.GREEN,of this city for two weeks.

RIPLEY--Judge R.B.BAPTIST,Circuit Court Judge,has refused a motion for a new trial made by attorneys for Albert MOORE and Harrison YON,convicted torch murderers of MOORE’s step-mother.The two defendants were given 21 years in the penitentiary and will appeal to the Supreme Court.

DANIEL-SMITH--Their many friends among the younger set are much interested in the recent marriage of Mr.W.A.DANIELS,Jr.,of this city and Miss Alvis Blanche SMITH of Charleston.The wedding occurred at the residence of Rev.S.B.MORRISON Saturday evening,March 5th.Mrs.R.F.SMITH,mother of the bride and Mr.W.A.DANIELS,father of the groom were present at the ceremony.The young people will make their home with thegroom’s parents in Covington.

DEATH--Mrs.Susie MITCHELL,wife of H.B.MITCHELL,of the Tabernacle vicinity,died in the Baptist hospital,Memphis,last Saturday afternoon following an operation.The immediate cause of her death was pneumonia.Interment occurred at Charleston.Mrs.MITCHELL was born October 12,1870,being nearly five months past 61 years at the time of her death.She was married to J.A.ARCHER in March,1888,to which union,six children were born;Dan, Will, and Frank

ARCHER surviving.She was married to H.B.MITCHELL in 1904,he and their son,Elmer Lee,surviving her.She also leaves one sister,Mrs.Howard WEAVER of Ward,Ark.,and three brothers,Willie EARWOOD of San Fernando,Calif.,Robert & C.H.EARWOOD,of this county.

DEATH--Robert ROUDEBUSH,of Memphis,loan official of the Union Central Life Insurance Company,died in a Cincinnati,Ohio hospital Friday,March 4th.Interment at Milford,Ohio.He was well known in Covington and Tipton County.His company has about 175 loans in this county.He never married,leaves his mother,two brothers and an aunt.

SHELBY JURY ACQUITS DEFENDER OF SISTER--Paul GLOVER,Munford mechanic,slayer of his brother-in-law,Burtis HATHCOCK,was aquitted by a Shelby Co.jury after a deliberation of only one hour and 20 minutes Tuesday.

DEATH--Mrs.Irene Nancy CROSS,wife of Jesse CROSS,of this city,died Wednesday morning after an illness of several months.(age blurred)Funeral services conducted by Rev.S.B.MORRISON,interment in Munford Cemetery.Besides her husband,she leaves three children:Georgetta,Dorothy and Lawrence; her mother,Mrs.Lula ROGERS,of Covington;two sisters,Mrs.Leonard MELTON,of Norwalk,Calif.and Mrs.G.C.SMITH of this county;and two brothers,Casper & Clyde SMITH,of this county.

PINNER_McKEE--A wedding of general interest which occurred December 5th,was announced this week.On that date,Mr.Cleatus PINNER,son of Mr.& Mrs.Vergil PINNER,of this city,and Miss Marie McKEE,daughter of Mr.& Mrs.John McKEE,also of this city,were married at Marion,Ark.

BRIGHTON NOTES--Mrs.Martha BASKIN is attending her mother,Mrs.D.E.TANNER,who sustained minor injuries in a fall last week.Mr.Clarence GEORGE,who suffered a broken limb last year while in the employ of the Horton Price Construction Company of LA,returned to his home at Egypt last week after treatment in the Lake Providence hospital.--Mrs.A.R.PINNER entertained with a miscellaneous shower in honor of Mrs.Rufus GEORGE,a recent bride.Twenty-four ladies were present and Mrs.GEORGE received numerous gifts.Mrs.GEORGE will leave soon with Mr.GEORGE for Lake Providence,LA where they will make their home.-Mr.& Mrs.A.L.TANNER announce the recent marriage of theur neice,Miss Marion Louise HUFFMAN,of Brighton,to Mr.Rufus Greene GEORGE,of Lake Providence,LA,which occurred Friday,February 11th in Marion,Ark.She is the daughter of Mr.L.S.HUFFMAN.

MRS.TOMPKINS HOSTESS--Mrs.Jessie TOMPKINS,night operator at the local telephone exchange,entertained the members of the exchange at dinner Tuesday at noon.Among those attending were:Mr.& Mrs.H.A.COMPTON,Mrs.Annie DAWSON,Mrs.Essie Lee GRAY, Mrs.Edith OSBORNE, Misses Elizabeth MOORE,Nell CHAPMAN,Margie DELK,Kathleen PINNER,Bessie MORRISON,Catherine CHAPMAN and Susie Neal STARNES.

LOCAL BOY HONORED--Robert MASHBURN,F.F.A.,student at Byars-Hall High School,was mentioned in the National Farm and Home Tour Monday morning.This program coming through WMC,Memphis,is sponsored by the US government.Along with the mention of other outstanding students,MASHBURN’s record of 1,132 pounds of lint cotton on one acre of ground was given much prominence.He ia a pupil of Prof.C.E.JOHNSON,Smith-Hughes instructor at Byars-Hall High School,and he received $75 in cash for his first production.

BELL A CHAMPION--Of much interest to his friends in Covington and Tabernacle is a communication recently received relative to Pvt.Brooks S.BELL,of Fort Sam Houston,Texas. Young BELL has been awarded a gold metal,following elimination bouts,signifying the fact he is the welter weight boxing champion of the 12th Field Artillary.He is the son of Mr.& Mrs.R.S.BELL of Tabernacle.

ENJOY SECOND TRIP--For the second time within a month,J.W.DARBY and his nephew,Wilton DARBY have enjoyed a splendid trip by auto.They spent several days in the Carolinas,stopping at points of interest going and returning.They returned Sunday following a ten-day trip to Chicago,Detroit,through Canada to Niagara Falls.They did not retrace their route except from Fulton to Covington.

REV.FAIN COMING--Rev.G.C.FAIN,head of the department of religious education of the Memphis Methodist Conference will speak at the First Methodist Church here Sunday.Rev.E.W.CHUMP,pastor,has been unable to resume his pastorial work since recently undergoing an operation.

WESTERNER HERE--Paul WATERS of Corvallis,Oregan was the guest of Mr.& Mrs.George B.RHODES of the Mt.Carmel vicinity last Thursday.For two years,he was a room mate of Sol RHODES,son of Mr.& Mrs.RHODES and visited him in California immediately before making the trip east,en route to New York City through Tennessee.

WELL-KNOWN NEGRO BURIED AT MASON--John W.BOYD,a well-known negro of District #10,died suddenly of heart failure Thursday,March 10th.He was buried the following Sunday.There were no immediate survivors.Well up in the eighties in age,BOYD was politically prominent in the three decades following the Civil War.A resident of a district composed largely of negoes,he was for a number of years,magistrate for the 10th District,and following a split in the Democratic ranks in the years following 1880 was elected to the Legislature from this county.He was also a member of the Covington Bar.

WILEY CAR WRECKED--The L.J.WILEY auto was badly wrecked Thursday afternoon one mile north of Crosstown.The accident occurred while Mrs.WILEY was returning from Munford,where she is a member of the Munford High School faculty,to her Covington home.Cecil Ray McLAUGHLIN Jr.,of Memphis was accompaning her.An auto passed her,cut in front of her car,causing her to swerve from the highway into a ditch and turning over.She was cut on the back of her head,needing stitches and her nephew was badly bruised.They were carried by a passing traveling salesman to the home of Mrs.WILEY’s parents,Dr.& Mrs.J.B.WITHERINGTON at Munford.

TO DIVE FOR COTTON CARGO--J.W.CLEMENTS,of Brighton,has been employed to assist in the salvaging the cotton from the Old Katie Adams hull which sank at the mouth of Wolf River last November.The work is under the direction of an insurance company for the legal ownership of the cotton will have to be determinded through the court.It is estimated that it will cost about $5,000 to do the work.

HAZEL GROVE NOTES--Jim STREET of Walnut Grove recently spent a few days with an uncle,Thomas LAVELLE,at this place.--Mrs.Ermon FLEMING is spending a few days this week with her mother,Mrs.Lula ROSE.--Billie & Dupree LAVELLE were guests of their cousin,Arline COATS Sunday. --Henry COATS was a guest of his mother,Mrs.S.D.COATS of Elm Grove Sunday.

MARSHALL_STRONG--Mr.James P.MARSHALL,of this city,announces the approaching marriage of his daughter,Alice Given,to Thomas STRONG,of Memphis.The marriage will be solmnized at the First Presbyterian Church,Covington on Saturday,March 19th.

THE SICK THIS WEEK--Juanita,10-year-old daughter of Mr.& Mrs.George ADAMS of near Rialto,is recovering from severe burns inflicted Monday when she fell into a pot of boiling lye.She was burned from her hip to her ankle. --Mr.T.R.ELCAN,formerly of this city,is recoving at his home in Hot Springs,Ark.,following very painful injuries received in a recent auto wreck.He was in the hospital several days. --Katherine Marie,young daughter of Mr.& Mrs.Egbert PARR,of Garland,is being treated in the Baptist hospital,Memphis,for a bone infection.

LOCALS--BORN to Mr.& Mrs.A.D.McCLELLAN of Memphis,Tuesday morning,a daughter.Mrs.McCLELLAN is the former Miss Alma SHELTON. --The residence of Ida DOUGLAS,colored,on Bledsoe Street,was damaged by fire Tuesday. An infant son of Mr.& Mrs.Howard GLENN,of the Solo vicinity,died early Thursday morning and was buried in the Munford Cemetery.He was a grandson of Mr.& Mrs.J.E.GLENN of Solo.

PERSONALS--Mrs.John Sneed WILLIAMS of Memphis spent the weekend with her mother,Mrs.Kate REID of this city.--Mrs.Jim HATHCOCK of Memphis arrived Tuesday for a visit with her daughter,Mrs.Mal SMITH,of this county. --Rev.R.N.OWEN of Paris was a brief visitor in Covington,guest of his parents,Judge & Mrs.W.A.OWEN. --Miss Antilla GILLESPIE of Memphis was the guest of her grandmother,Mrs.Annie HAMNER,of this city for several days last week.

EX_BOLTON HEAD DIES--Professor Joseph B.WILLIAMS of Little Rock,Ark.,former president of Bolton College,in Shelby County,died at his home Sunday.The body was brought to Memphis for burial.The 78- year- old tri-state educator was born August 9,1853 at Winchester.He is survived by three daughters,three sons and one brother.

TIPTON NOTES--Mr.& Mrs.W.A.RHODES,of Jackson,Miss.,spent a few days of last week with the latter’s parents,Mr.& Mrs.A.T.SMITH. --Miss Fannie SMITH who has been critically ill,is improving. --Mr.E.WALDRON,who has been in a Memphis hospital for several weeks was permitted to return home last Friday.

BURIED THIS WEEK--Miss Bettie SMITHEAL,82 years,of this city,died Sunday morning at the home of her nephew,Mr.G.W.HAMILTON,of this city.Her death followed an apparently slight injury of two weeks ago,when she fell in her room.Interment in Munford Cemetery.Surviving are two neices,Mrs.Grant REID,of Covington and Mrs.Mose SMITH,of Memphis; six nephews,W.T.,G.W.,and Stanley HAMILTON,of this city; Herbert HAMILTON,of Tulsa,Okla.;Green SMITHEAL of Dyersburg;and Shepherd SMITHEAL of Memphis.

DEATH--Mrs.Mollie ROGERS,wife of Jim Will ROGERS,of District #3,died suddenly of a heart attack Saturday afternoon.Funeral services at Smyrna Church,interment occurring there.Besides her husband,she is survived by two daughters,Miss Minnie ROGERS and Mrs.Lillie McPEAK,both of whom lived with her; two sons,Edward & William ROGERS,both of that district; one brother,Anderson COTHRAN,of Memphis;and one sister,Mrs.Jennie V.PINNER,of Gilt Edge.

DEATH--J.J.GRIFFITH,53 years,highly respected citizen of the Holly Grove vicinity,died Saturday afternoon after a 10-day illness.Funeral services at Holly Grove Cumberland Presbyterian Church,burial in the Old Baptist Cemetery.He is survived by his widow,one son,three daughters,three brothers and three sisters.

AMONG THE COLORED FOLKS--Lucille WRIGHT,aged 25 years,daughter of Mack & Daisy Wright PERKINS,of this city,died at her home in Memphis Saturday.She is survived by her mother,father,a sister,and three brothers.
