RAY CHILD RESCUED WHEN NEARLY DROWNED--Sarah Frances,three-year-old daughter of Mr.& Mrs.Dick RAY,of this vicinity,narrowly escaped death by drowning Sunday afternoon.She was sinking for the third time when pulled from a pond by Dave AMMONS on the D.O.AMMONS place in the Mt.Carmel vicinity.Mr.& Mrs.RAY were spending the day with Mr.& Mrs.AMMONS and their little daughter was playing about the place.Her companion,little Robert Earl BEARDEN,ran into the house and told the family of her having fallen into a nearby pond.Mr.Ammons was first to reach the scene and took the child from the water.First aid was administered,the water being pumped out of her lungs.
DEATH--Mrs.Hannah GRAVES,87 years,of Trezevant,died at her home Sunday night at 11 o’clock,following a short illness.Funeral services were held at the residence Monday afternoon at 3 o’clock.One daughter survives,Mrs.Tom HURT,of Trezevant;and a number of grandchildren,among whom is Mrs.F.C.MONTGOMERY,of this city.
AKINS & SCHEELE--A secret wedding which surprised the many friends of the couple very much,was revealed recently with the marriage of Miss Hazel SCHEELE & Mr.J.T.AKINS,both of Covington.The marriage occurred at Marion,Ark.,November 27th,the ceremony being performed by Rev.E.K.SEWELL,pastor of the Marion Methodist Church,at the parsonage.Mr.& Mrs.AKINS were attended by Mr.& Mrs.Jess HADEN.Mrs.AKINS is the daughter of Mrs.Ruth SCHEELE,of this city.she is a graduate of Byars-Hall High School of Covington and a Memphis businesscollege.Mr.AKINS is employed at the Haden Filling Station.

THE SICK THIS WEEK--Mrs.Laura LANIER has been seriously ill at the home of a daughter,Mrs.Sam BURLISON.
Mrs.SIMON,aged mother of Mrs.H.STARNES,is reported dangerously ill at the STARNES residence on Boyce Avenue.
Little change is reported in the condition of Mr.John GOODMAN,this week.
Mr.Edward OGILVIE was quite ill during the past weekend.He will go to Memhis for special treatments in the near future.
Friends regret very much to learn of the stroke of paraylsis recently suffered by F.H.BLOCK,of Wynne,Ark.Mr.BLOCK is well known here,having married Miss Eva MURPHY.
Janie O’BRIAN,four-year-old daughter of Mr.Ed O’BRYAN (both sp.used),of Dyersburg,formerly of Covington,underwent a serious operation at a Dyersburg hospital.The operation followed by an attack of double pneumonia,and her condition is said to be serious.
Friends and relatives here have been informed of the recent misfortune of little Miss Sarah McCLANAHAN,daughter of Mr.J.Sam McCLANAHAN,of Jackson.While skating,she fell and broke her leg.

BORN recently to Mr.& Mrs.James W.WAGES,of McComb,Miss.,a daughter,Ruth Mennell.Mr.WAGES was formerly of Covington,a son of Mrs.M.J.TANNER.
PERSONALS--Mr.Roy BOYD,of this city,returned Friday,after attending the funeral of his father,W.C.BOYD,in California.
-ANSWERS HIS FINAL SUMMONS--General E.R.OLDHAM,Confederate Veternan and prominent in business and social life of Lauderdale County,died at his home near Henning at noon Sunday.He was 87 years of age.General OLDHAM was stricken with a cold about three weeks ago,which developed into pneumonia.A native of Henning,he spent his entire life in Lauderdale County.He enlisted as a private in Troop M of the 7th Tennessee Calavry when the Civil War began.He was mustered out at Gainsville,Ala.,when the war ended.A prominent member of U.C.V.,General OLDHAM was honored nine years ago by being named commander of the Third Brigrade of the Tennessee Division of the organization.He held that office at his death.He served one term in the State Assembly as a representative aboit six years ago.He had been married twice.His first wife was Miss Mattie Lindsey BACON and of that union one son,Edward L.OLDHAM survives.After his first wife’s death,he married Miss Davis Scott,of Henning,who survives.He was related to Mrs.J.J.BOYD,of this city.Burial was in Maplewood Cemetery,Ripley.
TIPTON NOTES--Mrs.Hob MOORE was called to Memphis recently to attend the bedside od her sister,Mrs.Meda SIGLER,who is very ill in a hospital there.
SECOND STROKE FATAL--Marvin W.SHORT died at his home in this city at 9:30 a.m.Monday,following a second stroke of paralysis.A first attack of the disease was experienced about three years ago.Funeral services were conducted by Rev.A.FOWLER,of this city,assisted by Rev.B.A.WALKER,pastor of the Clopton Methodist Church,at that church Tuesday,burial in the church cemetery.Mr.SHORT had for a number of years been employed by the C.H.Hill Lumber Co.He is survived by his wife and several children.
CHRISTIAN WOMAN IS BURIED HERE FRIDAY--Miss Lola DALE,formerly of this city,died in a Memphis hospital Thursday,Feb.4th.Funeral services were conducted by Rev.R.L.JETTON,paster on the First Presbyterian Church,of this city,Friday afternoon at the residence of J.L.McNEELEY,of this city.Interment occurred in Munford Cemetery.Miss DALE,the daughter of Charles & Mary DALE,was reared in the family of the late W.M.& Sarah HALL as a member of the family.Her parents came to this country from England with the late R.M.JACKETT.Her parents died when she was two-years-old and she was taken into the HALL family from whom she received her education and livelihood.Only one daughter of the family in which she was reared survives,Mrs.J.C.BOALS,of Winston-Salem,NC.For three years prior to her death,Miss DALE was a member of the family of J.E.COTTON,of Memphis,serving as homemaker.Joining the Presbyterian Church at Covington in 1883,Miss DALE never removed her membership.She is survived by two sisters,Miss Emma DALE,of Mt.Carmel and Mrs.Tom WELCH,of Paragould,Ark.Among those from out of town attending the funeral were:Mr.& Mrs.J.S.COTTON; Mr.& Mrs.J.T.NELSON; Mrs.J.W.SIMONTON; Miss Rosamond HALL; Mrs BAULCH & Mrs.GORM,all of Memphis; Mrs.J.C.BOALS,of Winston-Salem,NC;and Mr.& Mrs.Thomas WELSH,of Paragould,Ark.
DIES AFTER THREE WEEKS ILLNESS--Mrs.Dora LADD,wife of W.F.LADD,of this vicinity,died at her home Sunday,Feb.7th.She was nearly 71 years of age at the time of her death.Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the residence of Will McGOWAN of this city, by Rev.Homer LINDSEY,pastor of the First Baptist Church of this city,interment in Munford Cemetery.She was the daughter of the late W.D.& Martha WALTON and the last of the eight children in the WALTON family.She was a consistant member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church.Besides her husband,she is survived by a number of neices and nephews of this city and community.

NEGRO PORTER SHOT--Frank BOYD,colored,porter for J.H.FORTNER Co.,came out second best in an altercation Sunday night,receiving a pistol shot through the leg.Lewis MABLE,also colored,who did the shooting,is in jail in default of bond.
-SHOOTS IN SELF-DEFENSE--John BARRET,colored,of the 9th District,shot and instantly killed Tom ATKINS,also colored,of that District Saturday night.BARRET surrendered to Sheriff Jim T.SCOTT Sunday morning,made bond of $1000 for his appearance and was released.It is said the shooting was in self defense.
CASHIER IS SHOT AS PAIR HOLDS UP BANK--The bank at Yorkville,a short distance south of Mason Hall,was held up at 11:45 last Thursday morning by three men,who shot and seriously wounded Malcolm FORRESTER,26 year-old cashier,and made their escape with $2,500.Mr.FORRESTER was shot without warning,once in the side and once through the wrist,was rushed to a Dyersburg hospital.Miss Mary PACK,assistant cashier,was in the bank at the time with Mr.FORRESTER and she was forced at the point of a gun to open the door of the safe.Later,two suspects were arrested,but later freed on bond.Cashier FORRESTER’s condition shows improvement.On Tuesday,Coleman TUCKER,53 years,a farmer near Dyersburg,was identified by FORRESTER as the bandit who shot him.He is reported held without bond.
OCTOGENARIAN DIES--Mr.Tom SMITH,84,of the Hogan Store vicinity,died at his home Saturday night,following an illness of several weeks.Funeral services were held at the residence Sunday afternoon by Rev.E.B.RUCKER,pastor of Tabernacle Methodist Church,interment following in the Mt.Carmel Cemetery.Mr.SMITH was a fine type, a substantial Christian manhood,meriting the respect which he enjoyed from a wide circle of friends.Four daughters survive:Mrs.Charlie WHITEHORN, Mrs.Fayette WISEMAN, Mrs.Tom PARKER and Mrs.Ben FAULK,all of this county;and one son,T.Pink SMITH.
DIES IN BROWNSVILLE--Capt.A.D.BRIGHT,59,formerly of Brownsville,died at the home of his sister,Mrs.James TIPTON yesterday afternoon.He had been ill for several months,but recently coming to Brownsville from Baltimore.Born in Brownsville,a son of the late Judge and Mrs.A.D.BRIGHT.He received his early education in Haywood County,later holding many county offices.Enlisting at the outbreak of the World War,he saw service in Cuba,the Phillippines,Japan and China.After the close of the war,he made his home in Washington,where he soon held a responsible position with the Federal Farm Loan Board.Funeral services held from the residence of Mr.& Mrs.Will SHAW,by Rev.Lud H.ESTES.Burial in Oakwood Cemetery.Besides his widow,Capt.BRIGHT is survived by his sister at whose home he died;and a second sister,at whose residence the funeral services were held.Mrs.TIPTON,his sister,is a sister-in-law of Mrs.M.L.KEATHLEY,of this city.

TIPTON NEWS--Mr.E.WALDRON left last Tuesday for Memphis,where he entered the Veterans’ Hospital for an operation for appendicities.
HOPEWELL NEWS--Mr.James KELLEY & Miss Willie Bell EASLEY surprised their many friends Thursday,Feb.11th,by motoring to Marion,Ark.,where they were quietly married.They were accompanied by the bride’s brother and sister,Mrs.Lonnie WILKES and Paul EASLEY.
RAILROAD MAN DIES FROM HEART FAILURE--Stricken with a heart attack at his home in Ripley early Sunday night,John M.TAYLOR,Sr.,agent for the Illinois Central Railroad for 27 years,died within a few minutes while members of his family,including a daughter from Dyersburg were at his bedside. Mr.TAYLOR was an exceptionally popular man in the railroad circles and had many friends in Covington who regretted to learn of his death.Besides his widow,he is survived by a son,John M.TAYLOR,Jr.,of Ripley;and a daughter,Mrs.D.M.PEARCE,of Dyersburg.Burial in Ripley.
INFANT BURIED FRIDAY--Orville Everett,five-months-old son of Mr.& Mrs.Robert GLOVER,of near Solo,died Thursday afternoon,Feb.11th,following an attack of pneumonia.Funeral services were held at Townsend Cemetery Friday afternoon by Rev.E.H.HUTCHISON,pastor of Central Christian Church,of this city.
HEART ATTACK FATAL TO HAYWOOD COUNTIAN--J.D.ANTHONY,for 37 years surveyor of Haywood County,died at his home Feb.10th.His death was unexpected.He was 77 years of age.Mr.ANTHONY had made Haywood County his home all his life.He is survived by his wife,three sisters,Miss Mary ANTHONY,of Washington;Mrs.Ellen WALKER,of Covington; and Mrs.William Lynn ANTHONY,of Evansville,Ind.;two step-daughters,Miss Gordonelle WILLIAMS and Mrs.Arthur YOUNG,of Hot Springs,Ark.Mr.ANTHONY’s sister of Covington,Mrs.WALKER,accompanied by her son,Major M.A.WALKER,the latter’s wife and son,Mr.Charles WALKER,and also her daughter,Mrs.Linnie W.WOMBLE,attended the funeral service.
THE SICK THIS WEEK--Little Ann and James COSTELLO,children of Mrs.Josephine COSTELLO,of the Tabernacle vicinity,entered St.Joseph Hospital,Memphis,both to undergo tonsilectomys. --
Mrs.Ted CORNER,the former Miss Nell HENDERSON,of this city,but now of El Paso,Texas,is reported by relatives to be improving.Mrs.CORNER’s mother,Mrs.W.L.McCULLOUGH,of this city,is spending the month of Feb.with her.
-Mrs.Annie LANIER has rallied from a serious operation perfomed in a Memphis Hospital Monday,and is recoving rapidly from its shock.Her daughter,Miss Eleanor LANIER,a student at the Woman’s College of Ala.,Montgomery,is at home and has been attending Mrs.LANIER during her illness.
Mr.Porter BAILEY,of Burlison,will enter the Veterans’Hospital at Memphis Friday for a serious operation.Mrs.BAILEY will be in Memphis at the home of her parents,Mr.& Mrs.W.H.BROUGHTON,during Mr.BAILEY’s confinement in the hospital.
Miss Amelia COLE,daughter of Mr.& Mrs.G.W.COLE,of the Hunt’s Store vicinity,is reported in a serious condition in a Memphis hospital.She is suffering from partial paralysis.

GARLAND HENDRICK DIES--A wire was received this morning of the death of Garland HENDRICK,son of Mr.& Mrs.R.T.HENDRICK,of Mason.He had been for some time in a Colorado sanitaruim.Mrs.HENDRICK was with him at the time of his daeth.The body will be returned to Mason for burial.
LOCAL NEWS--BORN Friday,February 5th,to Mr.& Mrs.H.P.CASH,Jr.,of Reveria,a daughter,Peggy Anne.
Mrs.E.L.ROPER,Sr.,entertained Sunday with a delightful dinner to compliment Dr.ROPER and their son,E.L.ROPER,Jr.,whose birthdays occurred on the 21st and 22nd.
MRS.TYSON HONORED--Of interest to Covington friends and relatives is a recent announcement of the election of Mrs.W.T.TYSON,of Memphis,to the head of the Town & Country Garden Club,of that city.She is the sister of Mrs.Hayes E.OWEN,of this city.
CARD OF THANKS--We wish to thank our friends,especially Mrs.Effie PORTIS,our neighbors,Drs.DICKSON & NEWMAN for their sympathetic and untiring attention during the illness and at the time of the death of our beloved young daughter,Jessie Lou.The floral offerings and many kindnesses shown at this time will be a sweet memory of devotion to us.May God’s blessings be with you all. THE SICK THIS WEEK--Mr.J.A.SHELTON,accompanied by Mrs.SHELTON and his brother,H.B.SHELTON,went to New Orleans last Thursday.Mr.SHELTON entered the Touro Infirmary,Friday.H.B.SHELTON returned home yesterday,stating that complete examination of his brother had not been effected prior to his return.
Mrs.Ferrell PICKENS left last week for Hines,Illinois,a suburb of Chicago,where she has entered a government hospital for treatment.She was accompanied by a sister,Miss Myrtle ROBY,who returned Tuesday.Mrs.PICKENS was for two years a nurse in the U.S.Army.
Little Roy,son of Mr.& Mrs.Luther McKEE,of this vicinity was operated on in the Baptist Hospital,Memphis,Monday.He has been in critical condition since.
-BRIGHTON NOTES--BORN February 15th,to Mr.& Mrs.John DICKEY,of Memphis,a daughter,Kathryn Joyce.
RIALTO NEWS--BORN to Mr.& Mrs.Riley LUNDY Sunday,February 11th,a son,James David.
HUTCHISON DOES THE SQUARE THING--About two weeks ago,J.A.HUTCHISON,of Mack and Ripley,Lauderdale County,unavoidably struck and killed a negro boy at the Melrose Crossing.Those interested stated yesterday that so completely unavoidable was the deplorable occurrance that the child’s mother,Myrtle Dowell JOHNSON,had made no effort to enter a lawsuit in connection with the child’s death.Immediately after the accident,Mr.HUTCHISON drove to Covington where he instructed Sheriff J.T.SCOTT to have the child decently buried,stating he would be personally responsible for the costs.This week Mr.HUTCHISON’s attorney was in Covington and paid all funeral expensives,giving the negro mother a check for $400.It appears that Mr.HUTCHISON had interested himself in the case subsequent to the accident and had obtained the amount from an insurance company.
DEATH--Miss Jessie Lou BIRDYSHAW died at the home of her parents Thursday afternoon at 4 o’clock in this city.Jessie Lou was the youngest of five children in this family.She was born October 30,1914,at Goddard,Ala.,and was a most estimable young lady,whose passing was a great shock to her family and friends.Those surviving are her parents,Mr.& Mrs.J.L.BIRDYSHAW,of this city,who made their home in an apartment at the residence of Mrs.Effie PORTIS;two brothers and two sisters,Edward BIRDYSHAW and Mrs.Claud BISHOP,both of Haleysville,Ala.;Silas BIRDYSHAW,of Bear Creek,Ala.;and Mrs.Pauline YANCEY,of Philcampbell,Ala.;and grandmother,Mrs.ARMSTRONG,who made her home with the BIRDYSHAWs here.Interment in Munford Cemetery,this city.
WELL KNOWN CITIZEN IS BURIED SUNDAY MORNING--Mr.A.D.JONES,well known citizen of the Bride community,died early Saturday morning following an illness of several months.Funeral services were held at Walnut Grove Sunday morning at 10 o’clock by Rev.S.B.MORRISON,pastor of Covington Methodist Circuit.Mr.JONES,a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church,was a highly respected man and a representative citizen of this community.He is survived by his widow,Mrs.Sarah JONES;one son,Ollie JONES,of Memphis;three daughters,Mrs.Lucy LaFEVER,of Holly Springs,Miss.,Mrs.Kate WILSON and Mrs.Lola WILSON,both of the Detroit community.
LEWIS GETS PEN TERM--Three youths charged with the robbery of the Ernest MOODY Store at Midway,near Dyersburg,a few months ago,after binding and gagging the clerk,M.V.STEVERSON,were found guilty by a circuit court jury there and were sentenced to five years each in the penitentiary.One of the trio,Fonnie LEWIS,of Covington,changed a plea of not guilty to one of guilty.The other defendants are Aubrey LEWIS,cousin of Fonnie,and Homer McDONALD,a former resident of Dyer County.
DEAD NAVAL OFFICER KNOWN IN COVINGTON--Following an operation at the Edward Hines Hospital near Chicago,David MAXEY,retired naval officer and prominent Dyersburg citizen,died at 1:30 a.m. last Thursday.Born in the fifth District of Dyer County,of a prominent pioneer family,he spent his earlier life in the Meacham community and Dyersburg.When a young man,he enlisted in the Navy and served 14 years,including the World War period.He was retired as a Chief Petty Officer a few years ago because of ill health.He was married to Miss Elizabeth TENNEY,of Dyersburg.She and a son,David,Jr.,survive him.He is also survived by four brothers,Ed MAXEY,who resides at the homestead at Meacham;R.A.MAXEY & C.W.MAXEY,all of Dyersburg.(nly three brothers named.) Mrs.MAXEY is a sister of Mrs.Elmer NEVILS,of this city.
