 JOE MORELOCK BURIED AT MURRAY,KY MONDAY--The entire
 community was shocked this week to learn of the
 death of Joe F MORELOCK,19,son of Rev.& Mrs.J F
 MORELOCK,Methodist pastor of
 LaCenter,Ky.Rev.MORELOCK was pastor of Covington
 circuit last year.Mr.MORELOCK suffered a sudden
 attack of appendicitis and was rushed to a
 hospital,where it was found the appendix was
 ruptured.Funeral services and interment occurred in
 Murray Monday.Besides his parents,he is survived by
 four sisters and three brothers,one of whom is
 Prof.Wallace MORELOCK,principal of the Garland
 school.
 
 YOUNG MAN INJURED BY FLYING WINDLASS--Frank ELCAN,of
 this city,was injured recently while employed with
 the state forces at Loosahatchie river bridge near
 Woodstock in Shelby county.ELCAN was at work on the
 pile driver when the lead cable broke,causing the
 windlass crank to revolve rapidly.He was struck on
 the front part of his head,a deep slash splitting
 the flesh to the skull.It is not known just when he
 will be dismissed from treatment and permitted to
 return to his duties.
 
 WRECKED CAR BURNS;OCCUPANTS UNINJURED--Four persons
 narrowly escaped death,when a blowout caused the car
 of W R COUGHLAN,Chicago,overturn and catch fire two
 miles north of Covington.Mr.COUGHLAN,accompanied by
 his two brothers,Robert COUGHLAN and Henry
 COUGHLAN,all of Chicago,and Tommy MINTON of Little
 Rock,Ark.,was en route to Birmingham,where his
 mother is seriously ill.A passing truck carried the
 party to Memphis.
 
 OUT OF GAME--Mr.Harvey HENDRICK,of this city,a
 member of the Cincinnati Reds National League
 basball team,has been out of the game several days
 because of a fractured rib,which he sustained some
 time since.

 CHILDREN SHARE THE TOWNES BOYD ESTATE--Lewis BOYD
 and Mrs.Belle JOHNSON,of Pulaski; son and daughter
 of the late Townes BOYD,share equally in the
 provisions of his will recently probated
 here.Charles P SIMONTON is administrator.Mr.BOYD
 left the dwelling now occupied by his son to the
 latter,and the numerous pieces of real estate he
 owned in Covington he carefully distributed between
 his two heirs.Cash moneys said to be in banks and
 securities contained in lock boxes were not
 estimated,an equal division to be made by the
 administrator between the son and daughter.The
 remaining years during which the copyrught on the
 book,"Miss Minerva and William Green Hill,"the
 author of which was another daughter of the
 testator,Mrs.Fanny Boyd CALHOUN,is to run,were
 mentioned with the provision that the returns be
 equally divided.

 HENNING SON RETURNS A MULTI-MILLIONAIRE--Twenty-two
 years ago Earl HALLIBURTON,Los Angeles inventor and
 oil operator,left Henning with high ambitions and a
 crisp $5 bill in his pocket.Last week he returned to
 his old home town a multi-millionaire.After leaving
 Henning in 1910,HALLIBURTON spent several years as a
 laborer in the Oklahoma and Texas oil fields.Ten
 years ago,he invented a devise for capping oil wells
 and has made a fortune from it.He has a manfacturing
 plant in Duncan,Okla. With his wife and three
 children,HALLIBURTON is now making a 10,000 mile
 airplane tour of the United States.He is a cousin of
 Richard HALLIBURTON,Memphis author,explorer and
 world traveler.
 
 MRS.COOK'S SISTER VICTIM OF ACCIDENT--Miss Myrl
 GOAD,of near Ripley,was killed Saturday evening,July
 16th,about a mile south of Ripley.The young
 lady,about 16 years of age,was riding a horse from
 the narrow path leading from her home to the highway
 when she was struck by an automobile driven by J E
 STAFFORD,of Memphis.Mrs.STAFFORD and her
 mother,Mrs.G W NEWTON of Hickman,Ky.,were injured in
 the shapeup.Mrs.NEWTON suffered a broken
 rib,Mrs.STAFFORD cuts and bruises.The accident was
 held unavoidable after an investigation by Wallace
 McCLEISH,traffic officer.Funeral services were held
 at the Mt.Pleasant Methodist Church Sunday,burial in
 church cemetery.Surviving Miss GOAD are her
 parents,Mr.& Mrs.J A GOAD of Lauderdale County;three
 sisters,Miss Sadie Sue GOAD,of the home;Mrs.Conrad
 C.COOK,of Covington;Mrs.Larkin J SPENCER of
 Memphis;one brother,Murphy GOAD,also of the home.
 
 CHARLESTON NOTES--Mrs.C L SHOAF and
 daughter,Marjorie were guests of Mr.& Mrs.Rufus
 FOWLER,of Jackson,for several days.   Little Miss
 Jane DAVIS is again at home after a visit of several
 days with her sister,Mrs.A T BEATY of Stanton.  
 Mr.& Mrs.Charles WHITE of Milan,Mr.& Mrs.Lloyd LOW
 of Tunica,Miss.,and Miss Mabel BRAMMER,of Memphis
 were the weekend guests of Mr.& Mrs.Will BRAMMER.  
 Mr.& Mrs.Maylon SMITH and family and Mr.& Mrs.Henry
 SMITH and son,all of Bethlehem,visited relatives
 here last week.   Mr.Robert FAULK,of
 Dallas,Texas,was a visitor in this community.   Mr.&
 Mrs.Emory DAVIS and son Moody,have returned to their
 home in Memphis after two weeks visit with relatives
 here and in Brownsville.   Misses Annie Rob SMITH
 and Aileen COLE are at home after six weeks' course
 at State Teachers College,Memphis.   Miss Nannie
 BOURNE and Frances WRIGHT returned to their homes
 here after visiting relatives in Little Rock,Ark.  
 Mr.& Mrs.Lester EARWOOD were the weekend guests of
 his father in Covington vicinity.   Mr.& Mrs.Uzzell
 HAWKINS and daughter Geraldine,and Mrs.John
 STEWART,were the weekend guests of the family of
 Frank BURGESS in Covington.   Mr.& Mrs.Tom
 WADDELL,Mrs.W E BOURNE and daughter,Nannie,all of
 this place,and Mr.& Mrs.Henry WADDELL and son,of
 Memphis,were guests of Mr.& Mrs.John MIZE,of near
 Stanton Sunday.   
 Mrs.Milton WILLIAMS of Monroe,La has returned home
 agter a visit with her parents here.   Mr.& Mrs.Tom
 BOURNE,Mr.& Mrs.Bill BOURNE and daughter,all of
 Brunswick;Mrs.Anna MARTIN and daughter Anna Mai,of
 Raliegh; Mr.& Mrs.Lyle BOURNE and children;Mr.&
 Mrs.O C HAWKINS & family,Mr.& Mrs.Frank BEATY and
 children,of Stanton,were all guests of Mr.& Mrs.R S
 BOURNE Sunday.   Slumber Party;Miss Pearl Baxter
 entertained a few of her friends with a slumber
 party Friday evening at the home of her
 grandmother,Mrs.F C FLOYD.Among those present were
 Misses Esther WHITEHORN,Rebecca RICHARDSON,Charline
 DAVIS,Sylvia COTHRAN,Miss Audrey BROWN,the latter of
 the Covington vicinity.
 
 OLD DOCUMENT WAS RECENTLY UNCOVERED--S O HUEY,who
 has been writing "The Leaflets" for the Leader for
 many years,recently discovered a document nearly 83
 years old,which was the recommendation written for
 his father,the late William HUEY,when the latter
 left Ireland for America.The text of the old
 paper,which is yellowed with age but entirely
 legible,follows: "These are to certify that William
 HUEY has for some years been a member of the church
 at 1st Kilraught's in the full enjoyment of the
 privileges and that he is hereby recommanded to the
 fellowship of the church where it may please divine
 Providence to order his residence.Thomas

 CRAWFORD,Sec.Clerk.Ballyweany,October 10,1849." "In
 addition to the foregoing certificate,I have great
 pleasure in bearing testimony in favor of Mr.William

 trust which his qualifications will enable him to
 fill."
 
 TABERNACLE AFFAIRS--The lawn of the Esq. J S MAYO
 home at Tabernacle was the scene of a neighborhood
 picnic one day last week.A small group of neighbors
 met to enjoy an informal outing with a picnic
 lunch.The J H FLOWERS family were present,as were
 Mr.& Mrs.George HOWARD,Dr.& Mrs.A J ROBY and
 son,Mr.Carl ROBY,the HICKMAN family and Miss Alice
 RICE,guest of Miss Dorothy FLOWERS,completed the
 guest list.

 BRIGHTON NOTES--Mr.& Mrs.L D MORRISETT and son,of
 Blytheville,Ark.,were recent guests of the former's
 aunt,Mrs.W L DICKEY,at Brighton.   Master J T
 HATHCOCK is confined to his home with an attack of
 scarlet fever.   Mrs. W L DICKEY received
 recently,an announcement of the marriage of her
 neice,Miss Margaret HAMRICK,daughter of Mr.& Mrs. T
 G HAMRICK,formerly of Salem,to Mr.Roy MOIR,of Los
 Angeles,Calif.The wedding occurred January 4th at
 Tucson,Ariz.,the young couple making the trip from
 Los Angeles to Tucson by plane.Mrs.MOIR has made her
 home in Los Angeles for the past three years where
 she has been engaged in stenographic work with a law
 firm.   Buford,Marilyn,Richard Lee and Janet
 HUFFMAN,the four small children of Mr.& Mrs.L E
 HUFFMAN,of Burlison are suffering from attacks of
 whooping cough.   Mr.Henry H ROSE celebrated his
 68th birthday Sunday; also that of his little
 grandson,Herman Rose,aged five. Five children were
 present and 14 grandchildren; Mr.& Mrs.Wilce ROSE
 and family of Munford; Mr.& Mrs.Pearl ROSE and
 family of Detroit; Mr.& Mrs.Warren McWILLIAMS and
 family of Holly Grove; Mr.& Mrs.Earle
 BILLINGS,Mr.Erskin ROSE, Mrs.Henry ROSE &
 Mr.N.H.BOSWELL all of Brighton; Mr.John BILLINGS &
 Mr.Norris OWEN of Oak Grove; Misses Miscille HUFFMAN
 & Opal ROSE, Mr.Andrew ROSE,Mr.John WISEMAN and
 Mr.Pearl MASON.A delicious dinner was served,cake
 and ice cream being served in the afternoon.

 our father,T C McQUISTON,during his long illness,and
 for the expressions of sympathy at the time of his

 DETROIT NEWS--Friends of Mrs.T S TOWNSEND are very
 glad that she is again able to be at home after
 being treated in a Memphis hospital for the past two
 weeks.   Mrs.Lora DAVIS,who has been ill for the
 past week,shows little improvement at this writing. 
  The infant child of Mr.& Mrs.L E HUFFMAN is very
 ill with whooping cough.   Mrs.Virgie McINTOSH and
 children wish to express their sincere thanks to
 their friends and neighbors who came last Monday and
 finished the work in their crop.Mrs.McINTOSH wants
 to assure everyone who was there this act of
 kindness will never be forgotten.

 THE SICK THIS WEEK--Recorder James J MILLER has been
 quite ill with a deep seated cold.   Mrs.G W PARKER
 is reported about well again.   Miss Ella HURLEY has
 been confined to her room in the W R BOYD residence.
   Mrs.Al PETIT,of Memphis,the former Miss Freddie
 SHERROD of this vicinity,is convalcing from an
 operation.   Ruby,10-year-old daughter of Mr.&
 Mrs.Carlton KINNEY,of the Oak Grove vicinity,is
 improving rapidly from an operation for tonsil
 removel.   Mr.H STARNES is in Illinois Central
 Hospital at Paducah,thought to be in serious
 condition.   Mr.Henry BEAVER,of the vicinity which
 bears his name,is reported improved after six weeks
 illness.   Miss Kathleen MAYO of Memphis,continues
 ill in Baptist hospital suffering the effects of
 poison.   Joseph FULLER,aged three,is doing nicely
 following an accident where he severely cut his leg.
 
 LOCALS--Born to Mr.& Mrs.Lanier OVERALL,of this
 city,Tuesday,a son.   Born to Mr.& Mrs.Cleatus
 PINNER,of this city,Wednesday,a daughter.   Born to
 Mr.& Mrs.Dennis PINKSTON of this
 vicinity,Tuesday,July 19th,a son.   Mr.Dudley
 SULLIVAN,of Memphis,was a visitor in the city
 Monday.   Mrs.H P COBB,who has been making her home
 with her parents,Mr.& Mrs.S H McCRAW of this
 vicinity,is now employed in Memphis.   Announcement
 is made that Archdeacon Charles K WELLER will speak
 at Holly Trinity Church in Mason.   Mr.& Mrs.Louis
 HILL and family and Miss Elizabeth HILL,all of this
 city,enjoyed a picnic on Knob Creek,Lauderdale
 county Sunday.They were joined in Ripley by Mr.&
 Mrs.F M LUCAS,the latter Mr.HILL's sister,who went
 with them on the outing.   Mr.& Mrs.Jim GLASS of Oak
 Grove,honored Mrs.W M ROBERTSON,of this city,with a
 birthday late Friday afternoon.Mrs.ROBERTSON makes
 her home with her father,Rev.L RAYNOR on Elm street.
   Embry TIPTON,colored,who makes his home on the W A
 OWEN place,wrote a letter,"Why I Like Tube Rose
 Sweet Snuff Better Than Strong Snuff" and received a
 prize for $5.The contest was conducted by a
 Louisville,Ky.,tobacco company. 

 PERSONAL--Dick GASSAWAY of Bartlett is the guest of
 young Sam STITT this week.   Miss Bessie Lou HILL,of
 Memphis,was the weekend guest of her parents,Mr.&
 Mrs.H B HILL.   Master Alvin VAUGHN,of Dresden is
 the guest of Bille WILSON of this city.   Mr.& Mrs.J
 E DEW and daughter,Miss Linnie,were guests of
 friends in Dyersburg Sunday.   Mr.& Mrs.George D
 GREEN & daughter,Mrs.Lawrence MAYO,of Somerville
 were visitors in Covington.   Mrs.Nannie HADEN of
 Gilt Edge,is the guest of her son,Mr.W L McCULLOUGH.
   Mrs.L R PHEBUS,of this city,has as her
 guests,Misses Mary Forte PHEBUS & Elizabeth
 BRITTIAN,of Union City.   Misses Penny Maude SILER
 and Juanita BROWN,of Halls,were guests of Mr.& Mrs.R
 B BUFFALOE of this city.   Mr.Joe FREEMAN,of
 Martin,was the weekend guest of Mr.& Mrs.J B HEFLIN

 Mrs.Thomas STRONG,of Memphis,was the guest of her
 father Mr.J P MARSHALL of this city.   Miss Lucille
 McDANIEL of Memphis is the guest of the family of
 her uncle,Mr.Norman SMITH of Oak Grove.   Mrs.Frank
 HARDWICK of Cleveland,has arrived and is the guest
 of her father,Mr.E L WORRELL of this
 city.Mrs.HARDWICK is the former Mrs.Mary Worrell
 MOORE of Covington.   Mrs.Charles WILSON of Los
 Angeles,Calif.,arrived this morning and is the guest
 of her neice,Mrs.John FREDRICKSON,of this city.  
 Mr.W R GIFT and Mrs.Edwin GOULDER returned yesterday
 after a few days visit with the former's
 daughter,Mrs.J R NOTGRASS of St.Louis,MO.   Eular
 HADLEY Jr.,nine-year-old son of Mr.& Mrs.Eular
 HADLEY of this vicinity,returned from two weeks
 visit with his aunt,Mrs.A E WILLIAMS of Bolton.  
 Mrs.M B ALEXANDER of Fulton,Ky returned home after
 visiting her son,Dr. L L ALEXANDER,of this city.  
 Mrs.Ben ANDERSON of Wright's and Mrs.Emmett PETERSON
 and daughter,Jacqueline of New York,were guests of
 the family of Mrs.Martha ENTRIKEN Friday.  
 Mr.Robert TOWNSEND left Monday for the army after a
 furlough which he spent with his grandparents,Mr.&
 Mrs.S H McGRAW of this vicinity.He is a member of
 Battery B,18th Field Artillery.   Mr.Robert
 BURNETT,of Halls,spent the earlier part of the week
 in Covington with Mrs.BURNETT and their
 son,Bobbie,who are guests of her parents,Mr.& Mrs.J
 H FORTNER.   Miss Morene TAYLOR of Fulton,Ky is the
 guest of her aunt,Miss Ivie DRAKE,of this city.  
 Mrs.J L FULLER returned Monday from a visit to her
 mother,Mrs.J C SANFORD,of New Albany,Miss.She was
 accompanied home by her daughter,Miss Dorothy
 FULLER,who had been visiting her grandmother.   
 Misses Mildred and Helen WILSON are at home from
 visiting their aunt,Mrs.J A WEST,of Memphis.   Mrs.J
 R NOTGRASS returned to her home in St.Louis Saturday
 after attending the funeral of her mother,the late
 Mrs.W R GIFT,which occurred here last week.She was
 accompanied home by her father,Mr.W R GIFT,who will
 remain with her for several weeks.   Miss Nina
 LEACH,of Memphis,is a guest of her parents,Mr.& Mrs.
 W T LEACH this week.   Mr.& Mrs.A S LANIER,of
 Sherveport,La.,left Tuesday after a visit with his
 mother,Mrs.W L McBRIDE and his
 sister-in-law,Mrs.Anne LANIER,of this city.  
 Mr.Sanford GARNER has returned to Nashville after
 spending his vacation in Covington with his
 parents,Mr.& Mrs.James L GARNER.Mrs.GARNER and their
 son will remain for a longer visit here and in
 Henning as guests of Mr.& Mrs.J T MANN.
 
 SUDDEN ATTACK FATAL TO R L FITE--Robert Lee
 FITE,aged 21 years,nine months and 29 days,died
 Monday,July 11th,at his home near Beaver.He had been
 in failing health for some months,but death came
 suddenly and was a great shock to relatives and
 friends.Funeral services were conducted at the
 residence July 12th by Rev.J D WHITE of
 Brighton,interment in the Munford Cemetery Surviving
 are his widow,Mrs.Ida Hutchison FITE; his
 mother,Mrs.John FITE; three sisters,Mrs.Walter BANKS
 of Brighton,and Mrs.E B PROCTOR and Miss Wilma
 FITE,of Beaver; seven brothers,Walter FITE,of
 Memphis;Willie Earle,Larry,Russell,David Banks and
 Walter B.,all of the Beaver community.
 
 FORMER RESIDENT DIES--Mrs.Sallie Elcan DAVIDSON,born
 near the Tabernacle community and for many years a
 resident of this county,died in her
 Tacoma,Washington home July 5th.Funeral services and
 interment occurred there.She is survived by three
 daughters,Mrs.Joe ROSS of Tacoma;Mrs.MURRAY,of
 St.Louis,Mo and Mrs.Dave LAMBATH,of San
 Antonio,Texas.
 AT HOME AFTER TRIP--Mrs.G W HAMILTON and son
 Billie,and Mrs.Sherrod SMITH and son Peyton,arrived
 early in the week after a trip by auto through
 Texas.Mrs.SMITH  & her son stopped at Weimer,where
 they were guests of her daughter,Mrs.Julian
 HOLLOWAY.Mrs.HAMILTON and son continued to the
 coast,returning by way of Austin,where they were
 guests of Mr.& Mrs.Clarence SMITH,formerly of
 Memphis.
 
 LOCAL BOY RE-ENLISTS--Cross DURHAM re-enlisted last
 Thursday in the regular Army at Memphis.In his
 previous enlistment,he served in the field
 artillery,Hawaii.This time he chose the field
 artillery at Fort Bragg,NC.He is a son of George W
 DURHAM,a farmer on route #1.

 FORMER RESIDENT HERE---Mrs.E L HENDRIX,of
 Chicago,was the guest of Dr. & Mrs. G B GILLESPIE,of
 this city,Friday of last week.She was en route home
 after visiting relatives in Fort
 Smith,Ark.,Mrs.HENDRIX,the former Miss Vegia
 STOVALL, daughter of the late Charlie STOVELL,one
 time,lived here until about age 10 years.She married
 Prof.E L HENDRIX,then on the faculty of the
 University of Arkansas.He was later appointed to the
 faculty of the University of Chicago,where they now
 make their home.

 CHRISTIAN WOMAN BURIED AT SHILOH--Mrs.Laura
 Elizabeth Max CODY,63,died at her home near Garland
 Sunday,July 17th.Funeral services were conducted in
 the Garland Methodist Church Sunday afternoon by
 Rev.S B MORRISON,pastor,assisted by Rev.W C
 TARP,pastor of the Garland Baptist Church,interment
 occurred in Shiloh cemetery. Mrs.CODY was born
 September 2nd,1868,in this county.She married in
 1888 to Taylor MONTGOMERY,to this union three
 children were born.Mr.MONTGOMERY died in 1892.On
 November 24th,1895,she married W T CODY,to this
 union three children being born also. Mr.CODY
 preceeded her to the grave by 12 years.Surviving are
 three daughters,Mrs.Willie LITTLE,Mrs.Hazelle
 GRIFFIN and Mrs.Lille CANNON; one son, Bryan CODY
 and 13 grandchildren.
 INSOLVANCY NOTICE--Having qualified as the executrix
 of the estate of E W HOLLOWAY,deceased,and having
 duly suggested the insolvancy of the estate and
 having been ordered to make publication for filing

 VISITORS FROM OKLAHOMA--Mrs.Wilbur GARVIN,her
 daughter,Miss Catherine and a friend Miss Katherine
 HARPER of Lawton,Okla.,were guests of Mr.& Mrs.R M
 ROBISON,of this city last Friday and Saturday.They
 were returning from the summer Conference at
 Montreat,NC,and were en route home.Mrs.GARVIN is the
 former Miss Mary Will DICKSON,daughter of the late
 Rev.Joseph A.DICKSON,on of the first presidents of
 Southwestern University, when that school was
 located at Clarksville.Both she and her late father
 are pleasantly surprised.
 HOME FOR HOLIDAYS--Prof. R M ROBISON,Jr.,of State
 Teachers Colegge,Memphis,is expected this week by
 his parents,Mr.& Mrs.R M ROBISON.Prof.ROBISON has
 served six additional weeks as instructor in the
 college this summer and will probably spend the
 remaining weeks resting after extra duties during
 the summer.

 DELIGHTFUL OUTING GIVEN MISS LANIER--Miss Dorothy
 LANIER,attractive daughter of Hon.& Mrs.Powless W
 LANIER of Jamestown,N.D.,was honoree of a most
 interesting affair given by Mrs.W L McBRIDE,her
 grandmother,last Thursday evening,A large group of
 the younger set enjoyed swimming at the local pool
 in the early evening,this being followed with a
 delightful moonlight picnic in the Southall
 Grove,one mile north of the city.The honoree was
 escorted by Prof.Morris E McCORMICK of Munford.The

 Dorothy McFADDEN with Winford CLARK; Evelyn WRIGHT
 of Clopton with Barnett STRONG,of Memphis; Eleanor

 YOUNG BOY WINS TRIP--Young John TURNER,son of Mr.&
 Mrs.S M TURNER of Kerrville,returned Saturday after
 attending the 4-H Club camp which was held at
 Jackson,the past week.The young man was awarded his
 expenses on the trip because of having exhibited the
 best corn of any 4-H Club member at his school.
 LIGHTENING STRIKES--The Edgar GREER residence on
 North Maple street was struck by lightening about
 4:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon.The bolt entered the
 meter on a porch and followed the wiring over the
 house.Practically all the insulation was burned from
 the wires.Damage was restricted to the cost of
 repairing the lighting system of the residence.
 
 CARD OF THANKS--It is with sincere gratitude that we
 express our thanks and appreciation for all the acts
 of kindness and sympathy shown us at the time of the
 tragic death of Myrl GOAD.Your kind ministration
 will always be remembered.Especially do we wish to
