TO SPEAK AT REUNION--At a late hour it has been announced that Hon.J.F.BICKERS and Hon.Kit WILLIAMS,both of Memphis,will address the Fourth of July Reunion crowds at Brighton Monday afternoon.These two prominent attorneys will speak in the interest of the candidancy of Judge M.R.PATTERSON.
INTERNALLY INJURED--Walter McINTOSH,of the Burlison vivinity,suffered serious injuries on Tuesday as a result of which his condition is very grave.In company of his wife and children,he was driving a wagon when the team shied at a water covered bridge.When he used the whip to make the team cross,they jerked,throwing him from the wagon,which passed over his body.An operation was performed at the Baptist hospital,Memphis Tuesday night and he is regarded as being in critical condition.
HEADS BEETHOVEN CLUB HERE--Mrs.E.H.HUTCHISON was unanimously elected to head the Beethoven Club for its 1932-33 season at a called meeting at the residence of Mrs.N.C.BROWN last Friday.Her name was presented by the nominating committee composed of Mrs.BROWN,chairman; Mrs.C.C.COX and Miss Pauline McBRIDE,and she was named to the important office.Mrs.H.W.SALE was elected vice-president; Miss Katie Lou SHOAF,secretary; and Mrs.Will HOWARD,treasurer.
CHARLESTON NOTES--Miss Jennie SMITH,of Tabernacle,was the guest of her aunt,Miss Minnie WALKER Sunday. --Paul DAVIS,of Memphis,arrived Sunday for a two weeks visit with his parents,Mr.& Mrs.J.W.DAVIS. --Mr.Walter BIRMINGHAM of Garland,spent Sunday with his sister,Mrs.Preston MARSHALL. --Mr.& Mrs.Frank JONES,of Memphis,were guests of her parents,Mr.& Mrs.W.H.DEVERALL Sunday.
BOSHERS-WEBB--Interesting to their many friends and relatives was the recent marriage of Mr.Alfred BOSHERS and Miss Margaret WEBB.The ceremony was performed Wednesday,June 8th,at Marion,AR by Rev.Les FLEMING.She is the daughter of Mr.& Mrs.Jack WEBB of Solo.He is the son of Mrs.Ollie BOSHERS of Leigh’s Chapel.
LOCALS--Mr.& Mrs.J.L.ALSTON and children are now at home in the Mrs.Pearl HUGHES residence on South College Street.-Lanier OVERALL has been given charge of the entire Covington rural route of the Commercial Appeal,starting July 1st. --A party composed of Mr.& Mrs.Jesse DIXON and family,and Misses Gladys HAZELRIG and Edna, Josie and Lola BARRON,spent last Friday night and Saturday on Flat Iron lake. --Young Wilson NEWMAN,of the Cotton Lake vicinity,recently suffered a severe fracture of his right arm.He attempted to ride a young unbroken mule colt and was thrown. --Friends of Miss Lera ROPER,member of the faculty of Byars-Hall High School,regret to learn of the death of her father,which occurred at his Saltillo,MS residence Sunday.Miss ROPER was not present at home at the time of his death,arriving a short time after.
THE LEAFLETS--The W.M.Y.of Oak Ridge Baptist Church visited the orphanage last Sabbath,40 strong,many of the visitors making their first call.It is regretted that the day was showery,making it difficult to get around and the home not at its best appearance.Mr.& Mrs.HUNTER are short-handed at this time,Mrs.SPAIN having recently resigned and Miss HUEY having recently undergone an operation.Only three men were in the party of guests who stayed for the afternoon services,led by Dr.C.B.BETTS,of Salem. --Mrs.S.M.MARTINDALE,of Bolton,spent part of last week with her sister,Mrs.D.C.CLICK,of Sharon.
HOPEWELL NOTES--Misses Jessie Clyde GRAVES and Juanita WISEMAN,of Memphis,are guests of their aunt,Mrs.J.M.EASLEY this week. --Mr.& Mrs.J.M.EASLEY and son,Donald; Mr.G.T.WARD and daughter,Rosemond; and Mr.& Mrs.Douglas WILLIAMSON and children,were all guests at the residence of Mr.W.A.WILLIAMSON of Tipton last Sunday.The occasion was Mr.WILLIAMSON’s 66th birthday.
TIPTON NOTES--Little Clarence Hopkins MOORE,Jr.,son of Mr.& Mrs.Hob MOORE,died Sunday morning at 8 o’clock,death being due to typhoid fever.”Junior,”as he was called,was only three years old and was a mighty sweet little boy.He not only leaves his parents to grieve,but two sisters and the many friends who knew him,loved him,and will miss him.Funeral services were conducted at Poplar Grove Monday morning by Rev.G.W.TRACY. --Mrs.M.L.CAGLE and son,Martin,Jr.,of Princeton,KY have been guests of the former’;s mother,Mrs.J.A.WILLIS.
THE SICK--Walter Miller,young son of Mr.& Mrs.T.B.PULLEN,of this vicinity,underwent an operation in a local doctor’s office for removal of tonsils Monday. --Mrs.Frank LAWSON,of Ripley,is convalescing at the home of her daughter,Mrs.Lester CHAMBERLAIN,of this city,after a severe illness.
McLISTER FAMILY IN ANNUAL REUNION--The members of the McLISTER family,with several friends,gathered at Craven Springs last Thursday,for its annual reunion.A fox hunt was enjoyed Thursday night by a number of the men in the party,Dr.W.A.L.McLISTER,of Brighton and Jim MOORE of Millington,were both on hand with fifteen dogs each.Among the guests were: Dr.& Mrs.McLISTER; Mr.MOORE; Dr.& Mrs.Waldo McLISTER; Mr.& Mrs.Safford McLISTER; Mr.& Mrs.Luke McLISTER; Mr.& Mrs.T.D.McLISTER; Mr.& Mrs.C.D.McLISTER and daughter; Esq.& Mrs.R.L.SMITH; W.V.HUFFMAN; Dr.Bate McCORMICK; Walter FITE; Miss Nell PHILLIPS; Noah and Elbert ANGLIN.
ARKANSAS VISITOR--Miss Laurine McGAUGHEY returned Saturday from Turrell.AR where she was the guest of her cousin,Miss Nancy Laura FLIPPO.Miss FLIPPO accompanied her home and they will be recipients of many social honors in Ripley,where they will be guests of their aunt,Mrs.George S.VOLZ.They will also be entertained by another aunt,Mrs.J.E.KEATLEY,of Memphis.
PERSONALS--Mrs.Leno MORRISON is visiting her parents in Russellville,AR while enjoying a vacation from her duties at the Gulf Refining Co. --Mr.& Mrs.W.L.McCULLOUGH,of this city,were the guests of her sister,Mrs.A.B.EDWARDS,of Fulton,KY Sunday. --Miss Virginia SHELTON left today for Fayetteville,where she will be the guest of her aunt,Mrs.G.W.STEWART for the next two weeks.--Miss Jennie Louise HARBOUR,of Dyersburg,is a guest of her brother and his wife,Mr.& Mrs.Talley HARBOUR,of this city. --Mr.& Mrs.A.B.COBB,Jr.,of Abberville,LA are the guests of his mother,Mrs.A.B.COBB,of this city. --Little Miss Mary Sam BLAKELY,of Dyersburg,has been the guest of her grandmother,Mrs.P.H.MARTIN,of this city. --Mr.Emmett GREER is entertaining his cousin,Mr.John RICE,of Braden and the latter’s cousin,Mr.Shelby ROBERTS of Jackson,MS.--Mrs.Neil BROWN,of Rosemark,the former Miss Irene McQUISTON,of this city,has been the guest of her mother,Mrs.J.C.McQUISTON,for about two weeks. --Mr.& Mrs.R.B.BUFFALOE and daughter were in Gates Sunday,guests at a reunion at the home of Mrs.BUFFALOE’s parents,Mr.& Mrs.S.J.PICJARD,of that place. --Mr.Perry ABERNATHY,of Pine Bluff,AR and his neice,Miss Manda WILSON,of Shereveport,LA were guests of the family of Mr.J.W.ABERNATHY,of the Holly Grove vicinity,this week. --Mrs.G.B.RHODES,of Mt.Carmel and Mrs.N.W.KELLY,of Memphis,were in Ridgely Sunday,where they attended the bedside of their brother,Mr.Joe JOHNSON,who has been ill several weeks.
NORRIS-GREENE--Rev.& Mrs.Porter NORRIS,formerly of Memphis,but recently of Fresno,CA announce the approaching marriage of their daughter,Mae,to Mr.Harold H.GREENE,of Little Rock,AR.Miss NORRIS will leave Fresno early in July for Little Rock,where the ceremony will be performed by her father.The young couple will reside in the Arkansas city,where he is in business.
DEATH--Mrs.P.A.BRINGLE,of this vicinity,died Wednesday,June 22nd.Services were held at the Oak Grove Church the following day.She was 73 years of age and had been an invalid for the preceding six years.Surviving are four daughters,Mrs.R.L.BRYANT of Mt.Carmel;Mrs.Claude JENNINGS,of Covington;Mrs.Addie WORLEY,of Palma,MO;and Mrs.Will HOPKINS,of this county.Mrs.Bringle was a native of NC.
ENTERTAINS VISITORS--Mrs.J.Elmore MILLER,of near Mt.Carmel.pleasantly entertained this week with a lawn party to especially compliment Mrs.C.JACKSON and two daughters,of Aransas Pass,TX. The visitors from the Lone Star State are guests of Mrs.Walter McKINNEY,of this city,and of Mrs.MILLER,Mrs.JACKSON’s sisters.
DEATH--Mrs.May Jewell BRUMLEY,wife of Lee BRUMLEY,a non-commissioned officer of the US Army,died at the Polyclinic Hospital in Des Moines,Iowa Monday.Her remains were brought to Covington,funeral services conducted by Rev.S.B.MORRISON at the residence of her mother,Mrs.Mattie HARDWICK of South Covington.A sister also survives.
DIES AT DAUGHTER’S HOME--Mrs.Julie A.SIMONTON,widow of J.M.SIMONTON and a native of Rosemark,died Tuesday afternoon at the residence of her daughter,Mrs.A.M.MOFFATT,of Memphis,following six weeks illness.She was 80 years of age.Born and reared in Rosemark,Mrs.SIMONTON moved to Memphis 8 years
ago.Also surviving are a son;J.W.SIMONTON and a sister,Mrs.Margaret J.SMITH,both of Rosemark.Burial occurred in Old Salem Cemetery near Atoka.

AGAIN OFFERS FLOWERS--E.P.PETREE,of the Texas Company,of this city,again wishes to offer flowers to all city churches and to anyone wishing to send flowers to the sick.His zinnia beds are crowded with blooms and he will be glad to have these cut in any quantity.Mr.PETREE has extensively beautified the company property here.
COMPETING IN THE HOTTUM SWIM--Malvin PETERSON,of Covington,has registered in Memphis for the annual 10-mile swim in the Mississippi River,sponsored by Doc HOTTUM,of that city for the past 33 years.PETERSON,a local athlete,who is always in condition,has been training for the event in a local pool.
COMPLETE BOARD TUESDAY--The board of mayor and aldermen met Tuesday evening.Other than routine business,the board appointed G.G.HARVEY and John W.WRIGHT to complete the list of five equalizers.Other members are R.S.McDOW, Will REID and C.L.RALPH. W.H.BAILEY has recently been appointed to the board to supply a vacancy existing for some time.
WITHDRAWS AS ECONOMIC MOVE--W.L.DURHAM,Jr.,who represented Lauderdale County in the last legislature and was the first to announce for re-election,has withdrawn from the race.DURHAM gave as his reason that “economic necessity has forced me to devote my time to making a living.”
OUT OF RACE--Roy BOYD stated Monday that he had decided to retire from the mayor’s race.Pressure of his personal business he gave as his reason for not seeking the office.
CAR LEAVES THE HIGHWAY,PLUNGES INTO BACKWATER--A car driven by Mr.COX,theatre manager of Union City,and occupied by his young son,and Mr.PARSON,exploitation manager for the Crescent Amusement Co.of Union City,left the Jeff Davis Highway north of Covington at the bend just south of the Hatchie River and plunged into the backwater.None of the occupants of the car was seriously hurt,though young COX was almost drowned before he could be taken from the car.The men suffered minor bruises.
TWO DAYS REQUIRED FOR STARNES CASE--The July term of Circuit Court got off to a slow start when almost two days were required to try a small civil case involving only $100.The style of the case was Mrs.Cicily SHOAF,adm.,vs W.W.TEMPLETON.Final arguments this morning and the case was given to jury. The cases against Claud SHOAF and Lloyd WRIGHT were called today.These three cases grew out of a collision some months since when the SHOAF truck is alleged to have struck an auto occupied by Julian WALKER,attorney of this town,and Mr.& Mrs.M.E.HATHCOCK,also of this city.As a result of the accident,Mrs.HATHCOCK died.The defendants separately suing are Mr.WALKER,Mr.HATHCOCK and L.E.FINLEY,adm.
TEMPLETONS GATHER--The TEMPLETON family of this county had a reunion at Templeton Lake,near Atoka,July 4th.Mr.& Mrs.Jasper TEMPLETON,of Winchester,were the only members of the family present from a distance.In addition to the family connection,many other guests were present.
BASKIN FAMILY REUNION--A family reunion and picnic was given at the residence of Mr.& Mrs.Laudie BASKIN,of Burlison,Sunday,July 3rd.Among those present where Mr.& Mrs.A.R.BASKIN and family; Mr.& Mrs.Lem BASKIN and family; Mr.& Mrs.Walter ROSE and family; Mr.& Mrs.Forrest McCommon and family; Mr.& Mrs.Porter BAILEY and nephew,W.T.BAILEY,Jr.;Mrs.Anna BAILEY; Mr.& Mrs.Burness McCOMMON and family; Mr.& Mrs.Bill FOWLER and family;Mr.Jessie BAILEY and family;Messrs.Johnnie BAILEY; Elworth McPHERSON;and Jim & Russell FLAKE.
HAMBY-SMITH--An interesting wedding was performed Sunday morning at 7 o’clock by Rev.Homer LINDSEY,when he united in marriage,Miss Juanita SMITH,daughter of Mrs.Mollie SMITH anf Jack HAMBY.all of this city.
COLORED PHYSICIAN WILL LOCATE HERE--Dr.W.A.MASON,for 18 months associated with the Rosenwald Clinic here,has decided to open an office for private practice since the closing of the clinic here.Dr.MASON will use the same offices occupied by the clinic and will both practice medicine and surgery.A graduate of Maharry University,he did internship at Provident Hospital,connected with Johns-Hopkins.
TABERNACLE NOTES--Miss Nell PICKINS spent last week with her brother,Mr.Ferrell PICKINS,of near Mason. --Doris Ann and Alison ROGERS,of Covington,and Virginia FAUGHT,of Memphis,are spending the week with their grandparents,Mr.& Mrs.W.A.PICKINS. --Mrs.J.H.BRIGMAN spent the weekend with her parents,Mr.& Mrs.Tom ADAMS.
VISITING IN TEXAS--Mrs.Green HAMILTON and son,Billy;and Mrs.Sherrod SMITH and son,Peyton,left early Tuesday morning by auto for a visit of two weeks in Sanantonio and Weimer,where they will be guests of her daughter,Mrs.J.S.HOLLOWAY.Mrs.HAMILTON will continue with her son to Galveston,on the coast.
LOCALS--BORN to Mr.& Mrs.W.B.WILCOX,of this vicinity,recently,a daughter.--BORN June 21st in Memphis to Mr.& Mrs.J.O.KNIGHT,a daughter.Mrs.KNIGHT is now at home with her father-in-law,Mr.J.M.KNIGHT,of the vicinity.--Mrs.G.B.GILLESPIE is at home after a visit of two weeks with relatives in Rayne,LA.She was accompanied upon her return by her grandaughter,Barbara CHAPPUIS,who is her guest here.
BROTHERS HONORED--Both Landon and Murray WHITSON,of this vicinity,have birthdays on July 4th.A birthday dinner in their honor was given at the Landon WHITSON residence near Liberty last Sunday.Practically every member of the WHITSON family in this vicinity was present,and a most delightful dinner and day were enjoyed by all. Mr.& Mrs.Lyle WHITSON,of Memphis,were also present.
GIVES PAJAMA PARTY--Little Miss Nelle FISHER delightfully entertained a number of her little friends Monday night with a pajama party at the home of her parents,Mr.& Mrs.F.R.FISHER.The guest list included Kathleen and Al SMITH,of New Orleans,LA;Betty Joe ANDERSON,of Paducah,KY; Ann Rivers WHITTEN,of Charleston,MS;Helen ADDISON,Bettie Jane COX, Kate & Bobby SHERROD,all of this city.
HONOR MISS HARBOUR--A number of the younger set of Covington and nearby towns arranged a hayride on the evening of July 4th to compliment Miss Jennie Louise HARBOUR,of Dyersburg,house guest of Mrs.T.HARBOUR,of this city.The young people made a wide circuit in a hay-filled truck,eating picnic lunch in Brownsville.Among those present from Covington and other towns: Jennie Louise HARBOUR, Catherine BLANKENSHIP, Mary Frances GREER, Maqrgie Greer, Mary & Alma ELAM, Evelyn SMITH, Lucille SASSER, Louise GRAY, Ruth HAYNIE, Mary Lee HAYNIE, Edith GRAY, and Jimmie HARTMAN, Rudie BAIRD, Peyton SMITH, Clint WRIGHT, Reese MULLIN, Martin GRAY, J.T.SCOTT,Jr.,Lawrence WALTON, Harry SAAAER and John RALPH.Mrs.T.HARBOUR chaperoned the young people.
THE SICK--Walter McINTOSH,of Burlison,continues in a very critical condition at the Baptist Hospital,Memphis.He was compeled to undergo a very serious operation after suffering internal injuries when he was thrown from his wagon and it passed over him. --Mrs.Vardie WALTON,of this vicinity,was brought home from the Baptist Hospital,Memphis,by an R.S.Maley ambulance,Wednesday.She has been confined there two weeks following a serious operation. --Mr.Marshall BAXTER,formerly of this city,but now of Memphis,underwent a very serious operation on Tuesday of this week in a Memphis hospital.Prior to the operation,he had been unable to walk for several months.His mother,Mrs.Minnie BAXTER,of this city,is with him at the hospital.
PERSONALS--Miss Sara GREER spent several days in Memphis this week,the guest of her aunt,Mrs.D.W.MARKS. --Miss Margaret McCLANAHAN,of Bartlett,is the guest of her sister,Mrs.George GRACEY,of this city. --Mrs.Anna ROSE,of Memphis,is guest this week of her sister-in-law,Mrs.Mattie CROOK in Covington. --Mrs.Ashley FISHER is guest of her sisters,Mrs.Walter SANFORD and Mrs.Fred FISHER. --Lieut.& Mrs.George STOKES,late of Fort Scott,IL are temporarily at the home of his aunt,Mrs.Green HAMILTON,of this city. --Mr.& Mrs.Frank CRUM,of Birmingham,AL were week-end guests of her parents,Mr.& Mrs.Will FYFE,of this city. --Mrs.J.D.PEELER,of Garland,is spending this week with her daughter,Mrs.L.B.YARBROUGH,of Paducah,KY. --Edwin & Mary Ann PAINE,of Memphis,spent the weekend with their grandmother,Mrs.Edwin PAINE. --Miss Sadie NELMS left Wednesday for Chicago,where she will spend two months with her sister,Mrs.J.M.YATES.--Mr.Robert CANNON of San Antonia,TX arrived Saturday and is the guest of his grandmother,Mrs.M.A.RAY,of this vicinity.
CHARLESTON NOTES--Mrs.Milton WILLIAMS,of Monroe,LA is enjoying a two weeks visit with her parents,Mr.& Mrs.G.W.COLE.--Mr.& Mrs.Emory DAVIS and son,Moody,of Memphis,are guests of his parents,Mr.& Mrs.J.W.DAVIS for a two weeks visit.
MRS.WITHERINGTON HONORED BY FAMILY--The recent birthday of Mrs.J.B.WITHERINGTON,of Munford,was signally recognizied by members of her large family Thursday, June 30th.Nine of her children and their families; 21 grandchildren; and three great grandchildren were among those gathering at the O.S.McCORMICK residence near Munford for the occasion.
THE LEAFLETS--Mr.John SHAW,of Cotton Plant,MS spent a few days the latter part of last week with his aged mother.Mrs.Emmma SHAW,of Idaville.Mrs.SHAW has been in very poor health for several weeks past. --Mrs.Edna WARNER,of Hickory,SC is visiting her sister,Mrs.Alice McQUISTON and her brother,Mr.Will BANKS,of Idaville.
LARGE NUMBER ATTEND NICE BIRTHDAY PARTY--The residence of Mr.& Mrs.W.R.FLEMING,of this vicinity,was the scene of an entertainment the past week to which an unusually large number of guests were invited.The affair was to compliment Reese Alfred FLEMMING and his little neice,Lois MONTGOMERY,the occasion being in recognitions of their birthdays.The guest list encluded: Mr.& Mrs.Ed WALTON and children,Marshall,Edward and Chesley; Mr.& Mrs.Lester JORDON; Mr.& Mrs.Leno MILLS and children,Milton,Sanford, Royce & Norma; Mr.& Mrs.Ernest MONTGOMERY and children,Horace, Lois, Laurine, Muriel, Autra and Vernia; Mr.& Mrs.Jack DAWSON and daughter,Mary Evelyn; Mr.& Mrs.Laudie FLEMING; Mr.& Mrs.Edgar JOY and children,Winfred & Dorothy; Misses Lora, Lois, Donnie JOHNSON; Virginia SMITH; Nina Sue & Gladys DAWSON; Velma & Sarah SMITH; Messrs.R.B.OWEN, Respers TOWNSEND, Waymon GRIFFITH; Leonard BRINGLE and Emmett SMITH.
BRIGHTON NOTES--Miss Mildred FARMER is spending several days as a guest of her sister,Mrs.A.L.TANNER. --Miss Sarah BOSWELL,of Liberty,is guest of her grandmother,Mrs.Fannie HUFFMAN this week. --Messrs.Edward Lee and Howard RICHARDSON,of Rosemark,were weekend guests of their sister,Mrs.O.L.TILLMAN. Mr.Wylie FARMER,of Memphis,arrived Monday,for an extended visit with his son,Mr.M.J.FARMER.
YOUNG-WEBB--A wedding of interest to friends here and at Ripley was performed in Marianna,AR July 4th,by the pastor of the Methodist Church of that place.Miss Kathleen Webb,attractive daughter of Mrs.J.A.WEBB,of Ripley,and neice of Mrs.J.E.DEW,of this city,became the bride of Mr.Marley YOUNG,son of Mr.& Mrs.Jim YOUNG,also of Ripley.Attending the young couple were Mr.& Mrs.J.E.DEW and Miss Helen MILLER of Covington and Mr.& Mrs.Clyde YOUNG,of Memphis.Mrs.YOUNG has been a frequent visitor in Covington.She and Mr.YOUNG will be at home to their friends in Ripley after July 8th.

LUNCH STAND ROBBED--Housebreakers secured $18 in money and a small amount of cigars and cigerettes at the WHITEHEAD stand on the Jeff Davis highway last Tuesday night.
EDUCATOR VISITS HERE--Prof.& Mrs.S.F. SCOTT,of Chicago,IL and Mr.&Mrs.J.T.BIBB and Mrs.J.T. BIBB,Jr.,of Arp,Lauderdale County,were guests of Mr.&Mrs. W.A.McGUIRE,of this city.Prof.BIBB holds a chair in the Armour Institute in his home city.The entire party went to Munford Sunday afternoon,where they were the guests of the families of Messrs.J.R.& W.W. BIBB.
FAMILY HURT AS CAR CRASHES INTO TRUCK--Mr.& Mrs.W.E.PETERSON and three children,Walter, William Clyde, and Bobbie,were severly bruised in an auto accident that occurred last week about five miles south of Covington on the Jeff Davis highway.Going north about 9 p.m. the PETERSONs were blinded by the lights of a car going south and ran into the rear of a truch owned by the Dyersburg Canning Company.The truck was said by the traffic officers to have been parked without tail lights at least seven feet over on the highway.
HOLD SERVICES TODAY--Mrs.Mary Patton GIFT,63 years,wife of W.R.GIFT,of this city,died this morning of an illness of one month.Services will be conducted by Rev.E.W.CRUMP,burial will be in Munford cemetery.To the marriage of Mr.& Mrs.GIFT,six children were born;four surviving.Her living children are: Mrs.A.L.HUNT and Mrs.Edwin GOULDER,of Covington;Robert L.GIFT,of Rialto and Mrs.J.R.NOTGRASS,of St.Louis.Her five grandchildren are: Mrs.E.L.ROPER,Jr., Misses Eleanor & Hazel HUNT,of Covington; Patricia and Billie NOTGRASS,of St.Louis; and one great gradchild,Josephine Shelton ROPER,of this city.A sister,Mrs.A.J.LOCKE of Los Angeles,CA also survives.
WINS PALACE THEATRE CUP--Miss Alma WILLIAMS,charming daughter of Mr.& Mrs. W.D.WILLIAMS,of this city,was the winner of the beauty contest held at the Palace Theatre last Friday night.T.C. MATHIS,promotor,was assisted by Ben LOWENHAUPT,of this city,put on the show.About 30 young ladies participated.
DEATH--Mr.Thomas C.VAUGHN,of Detroit,died at his residence in that place Wednesday afternoon.Death followed a period of illness extending over two years and which was due largely of the infirmities of old age,he being nearly 79 years of age.Born near the place of his death,he was a life long resident of this community.Surviving are three daughters,three sons and three sisters.
FORMER RESIDENT BURIED AT DALLAS--Mr.T.G.MORRISON,of Dallas, TX,a former resident of this county,died at his home in Dallas Sunday July 2nd.He had been a resident of that city many years though born and raised in the Mt.Carmel vicinity,this county.Mr.MORRISON was a son of the late Thomas and Mary MEARS MORRISON,the latter having been born on the site of the present courthouse in Covington.He was a Woodman and a Shriner.Surviving are two sons,Walter and Frank MORRISON,of Dallas; one daughter,Mrs.Earl HILL,of Brighton,a brother,Frank
MORRISON and a sister,Miss Jennie MORRISON,both of Brighton.Mrs.HILL attended the funeral,which occurred the Tuesday following his death.
BURIED AT SALEM--Thomas Chisolm McQUISTON,83 years of age,resident of Rosemark for 70 years,died at the home of a daughter,Mrs.L.E.McCORMICK,of this city,Wednesday,July 13th.Death was the result of a recent paralytic stroke,he having been ill for several months.Services were conducted at the Rosemark A.R.P.Church,burial in the Salem Cemetery.Besides Mrs.McCORMICK,he is survived by another daughter,Mrs.C.B.MOORE; and one son,J.W.McQUISTON,also of Rosemark.Two step-sons also survive;Dr.J.A.McQUISTON,of Memphis and W.P.McQUISTON,of Rosemark;one step-daughter,Miss Janie McQUISTON,of Rosemark.He is survived by 11 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
GIVE SERUM TO ALL EXPOSED TO RABIES--Ten people from Garland,ranging inages from about five years to adults,are receiving the Pasteur treatment here.A puppy belonging to Dr.J.A.DAVID,of that vicinity,was seen to behave curiously on Thursday of last week.It was killed and its head sent to Memphis.A positive report came from the lab,the test showing that it was suffering from rabies.The following persons are receiving trearment: Richardson ICKSON,Edwin DAVID, little Jean DOBSON,Mrs.Garrett DOBSON, J.L.HENSLEY, Clayton GLASS, Everett GLASS, Warren McCALL, Billie & Leda RAY.
PASSES AWAY SUNDAY--John GOODMAN,life-long resident of Covington,died Sunday evening at the residence of a neice,Mrs.Lena RUTHERFORD,of West Pleasant Avenue.He was 70 years of age and had been in bad health for several years before his death.Interment in Munford Cemetery.Surviving are one sister,Mrs.Fannie SMITH,of Memphis; seven neices, Mrs.F.T.ECKFORD,Miss Willie TURNER and Mrs.Howard PARKER,of Covington;Mrs.W.R.SAMUELS,of Ripley; Mrs.Nat NELMS and Mrs.Dale LAKE,of Memphis and Mrs.Lillie COOPER,of Little Rock,AR; two nephews,Rob Roy McGREGOR,of this vicinity and Clairborne TURNER of Little Rock.
PROMINENT VISITORS GUESTS OF RELATIVES--Mrs.Powless W.LANIER and daughter,Miss Dorothy LANIER,of Jamestown,ND are the guests of Mrs.W.L.McBRIDE and Mrs.Annie LANIER,of this city.Mrs.LANIER will be remembered in Covington as the former Miss Mary Lou ROBERTS,daughter of the late Rev.J.H.ROBERTS ,the former at one time pastor of the First Methodist Church of this city.Mrs.LANIER and daughter arrived yesterday from Memphis;Judge LANIER was at one time city judge of Memphis.He and Mrs.LANIER moved some years ago to Jamestown,where he is prominent in politics,he is now a candidate for the U S Senate from ND on the Democratic ticket.Mrs.McBRIDE is also expecting Mr.& Mrs.Aubrey S.LANOER,of Shreveport,LA the latter part of the week.Judge LANIER and Aubrey LANIER are sons of Mrs.McBRIDE and brothers-in-law of Mrs. LANIER,whose husband was the late Norris LANIER.
BRIEF ILLNESS FATAL--Mrs.Ida Walker BAILEY,wife of W.H. BAILEY,of this city,died in the Baptist hospital,Memphis,at noon Manday.Death followed infection from a boil from which she had only been a sufferer a few days.Services were conducted at the residence,interment in Munford Cemetery.Mrs.BAILEY is a native of AR but her early life was spent in Bells.She was married to Mr.BAILEY while a resident of Bells,to this union four children being born,one dying in infancy.Soon after their marriage,Mr.& Mrs.BAILEY moved to Mason,Mr.BAILEY entering business there.About 30 years ago they came to Covington,where Mrs.BAILEY resided with her husband and family till her death.Besides her husband,she leaves a son,Walker BAILEY,of Covington; two daughters,Mrs.Robert WILLIAMS,of Covington and Mrs.Guy HARWOOD,of Milan; a sister,Miss Fannie WALKER of Covington ; three grandchildren,Guy HARWOOD,Jr.,and Bobbie and Lucille WILLIAMS.
SIXTH IN 10-MILE MARATHON--Malvin PETERSON,son of Mr.& Mrs.Clyde PETERSON,of this city,showed remarkable recuperative powers and gratified his handlers,by finishing 6th in the Doc HOTTUM 10-mile river marathon at Memphis Sunday.According to his second,Edward WHITE,lifeguard at the local pool,one of the starters landed squarely on PETERSON’s back at the take-off,knocking the breath from him and filling his lungs with water.WHITE worked over him quickly and restored him,inducing him to continue the race.
BRIDE-ELECT FETED--Mrs.Everett McCORMICK and Mrs.C.H.MOORE jointly entertained at the former’s home Tuesday evening to compliment a bride-elect,Miss Sarah WORRELL,daughter of Mr.E.L.WORRELL,of this city.Miss WORRELL’s marriage to Mr.R.M.HOWARD,of Orlando,FL will occur August 5th at the home of her sister,Mrs.Frank HARDWICK,of Cleveland,TN.
THE LEAFLETS--Last Sabbath,the congregation of the Salem A.R.P.Church had the pleasure of hearing Rev.A.D.STRONG,of Nebraska.He is a son of the late W.J.STRONG,of Brighton,and grandson of the late Rev.J.H.STRONG,who was a beloved pastor of Salem for 25 years.--Miss Janie HUEY,one of the assistants at the Dunlap Orphanage,who was relieved of her duties several weeks ago because of having to undergo an operation for appendicitis,was able to return to the orphanage the past Saturday.
PETERSON-BURCHEL--Mr.Lawrence PETERSON,of Arlington and Miss Josephine BURCHEL,of Osceola,AR were quietly married in Marion,AR last Saturday by Rev.Lee FLEMING.The groom is a son of Mr.Robert PETERSON,formerly of the Clopton community.The bride is a neice of Mr.J.A.NOLEN,of Almyra.

DEATH--John L.THOMPSON,38 years,of Memphis,died Friday at a Memphis hospital following an illness of two weeks.Death was due to complications following an operation for appendicitis.Services were held in Indian Creek Church with burial there.He was a machinest and a native of Canada.Besides his wife,Mrs.Manda GWIN THOMPSON,a sister and brother survive.
AMONG THE COLORED FOLKS--Lucille ELAM,of this city,died at her home on North College Street Friday evening,July 8th,following a long illness.Interment in Townsend Cemetery.
ACCIDENT IS FATAL--Walter L.McINTOSH,of Burlison,died at the Baptist hospital,Memphis,Friday morning,July 8th,death being due directly to injuries sustained in an accident occurring about ten days previously.He was injured when driving a wagon over a water covered bridge,the mules balked at crossing,he used the whip to start them moving,they jerked and it threw him under the wagon,which crossed over his body.Besides his widow,Mrs.Virgie HUFFMAN McINTOSH,he is survived by four children;Russell Lee,Vance, Melba and Ernestine; three brothers,Ed, E.G.,and Will McINTOSH; three sisters,Mrs.B.O.MALONE, Mrs.W.B.HUFFMAN,& Mrs.R.A.HUFFMAN,the latter two of Memphis; two half-brothers,Paul & Harvey McINTOSH and one half-sister,Miss Velma McINTOSH,of Upland,CA.
FORMER RESIDENT BURIED HERE TUESDAY--Marshall N.BAXTER,a resident of Covington until he reached maturity,died in a Memphis hospital Monday.Mr.BAXTER had been in serious condition for several months and a recent operation failed to prolong his life.Interment was in Munford Cemetery.Mr.BAXTER,who was 41 years old,had made his home in Memphis for the past 15 years.Surviving are his widow,Mrs.Mary Sue BAXTER; a son,Marshall Nathaniel BAXTER,Jr.; his mother,Mrs.Minnie BAXTER of Covington; three daughters,Mary Frances,Dorothy Ann and Myrtle BAXTER; a sister Mrs.Dan FYFE,of Corinth,MS and two brothers,R.K.BAXTER,of Atlanta and Eddie BAXTER,of Florence,AL.
BRIGHT CHILD DIES AFTER BRIEF ILLNESS--Mr.& Mrs.F.T.KING,of this city,were in Memphis Sunday,to attend the funeral services of Virgil, 6-year-old son of Mr.& Mrs.L.E.KING,of that city.Interment occurred in the Ebenezer Cemetery near Somerville.Besides his parents,he is survived by three sisters and one brother.

BRIGHTON NOTES--Mr.Wylie FARMER,of Memphis,was the guest of his granddaughter,Mrs.A.L.TANNER this week. --Mrs.Sue PAYNE was the victim of an accident recently while a guest in the home of Dr.A.B.BLAYDES,of Atoka.She fell through a trap door to a cellar,injuring her hip seriously.
