Zadock Barnard was born November 28, 1779. I have found no proof that this is his exact date of birth, but this date does agree with the ages on census records. Family records indicate that Zadock married Polly Short on June 11, 1801 in Memphis, but I have not found proof of this either.

Zadock bought his land in Sumner Co., Tennessee on March 14, 1803 from Bright Herring consisting of 640 acres. Luke Barnard and Manouh Taylor witnessed the sale. In 1804, Zadock sold half of his 640 acres to his brother, Jacob. Zadock sold his land in Sumner County on May 8, 1830 to Andrew Harper, and by October 1830, Zadock and his family were in Greene County, IL.

The known children of Zadock and Polly Short Barnard are as follows:

  1. Susanah Barnard born 1802 married Joshua Hopper III, she died in 1854 in Greene Co., IL.
  2. Sarah Barnard born 1802 married Archibald Overby, she died in 1878 in Greeene Co., IL.
  3. Nancy Barnard born in 1805 married Anderson Ferguson, she died in 1855 in Greene Co., IL.
  4. Joshua J. Barnard born 1809, married Arcadia E. Handlin, he died in 1852 in Macoupin Co., IL.
  5. Zadock Barnard Jr. born 1814 married Lucinda Handlin, he died in 1893 in Douglas Co., MO.
  6. Rebecca Barnard born 1814 married John Maberry died in 1881 in Greene Co., IL.
  7. Lucinda Barnard born 1821 married Greene Maberry, died in 1900 in Shelby Co., MO.
  8. Wm Carroll Barnard born 1822 married Lucinda Dean, he died in 1877 in Barton Co., MO.
  9. Elizabeth J. Barnard born 1826, married Wm. G. Maberry, died in 1863 in Greene Co., IL.

I also believe that Zadock and Polly had at least 3 more children, but I cannot prove it at this point in time.

  1. Elisha Barnard was born in 1801. He first came to Greene County, IL in either 1828 or 1829 with a bond boy by the name of Reuben Bradley. I do not know the name of his first wife, but his second wife was Mahala Maberry. Elisha died in 1842 in Greene Co., IL.
  2. Martha was born in 1817, nothing else known about her.
  3. Mary Minerva was born in 1819, nothing else known about her.

Zadock was alive in the 1855 Illinois State Census and still living in Greene County. Polly was not in this census, so I assumed she had died. I have been unable to locate a burial place for Zadock or Polly Short Barnard. Any information or help on this family would be greatly appreciated.
