THOMAS (LONG TOM)2 SIMMONS (CHARLES1)1 was born Abt. 1774 in Bedford Co. Va., and died 1864 in Russelville, Ky.. He married LUCY BASHAM September 17, 1799 in Franklin Co. Va.2, daughter of WILLIAM BASHAM and SARAH ?.
Notes for THOMAS (LONG TOM) SIMMONS:

In the autumn of 1809, Thomas (Long Tom) Simmons and his wife, Lucy (Basham) Simmons came from Bedford Co. Virginia to settle on the west fork of Long Creek in Sumner Co. Tennessee. At that time there was no Macon Co. Some 35 years later, remote sections of Jackson, Smith and Sumner counties were combined and legally made into Macon Co. with Lafayette designated as the county seat. Pryor to this time, all documents in West Fork community were recorded in Gallatin, Tn. and may be found there at the present. Long Tom homesteaded 2000 acres of land along the creek and the adjacent ridges.

Long Tom and Lucy lived alone in the spring of 1864 when their home caught fire, Tom was 6 ft. 6 in. and weighed 300 lbs. and was practically helpless. Lucy led him a safe distance away, seated him in a chair and returned to save what she could from the burning house. Her clothing caught fire, she ran to Tom for help, but the flames were so great that she broke away and ran. She started back to Tom, but collapsed and fell and burned to death. Tom's hands were burned almost to a crisp from trying to extinguish the flames. He also received a bad burn on his body from his clothes burning. Thomas sat there the rest of that day, all that night and until sundown the next day scolding the wild animals from her body. At sundown, one of his grandsons, Simeon Simmons, came to see about them and found him sitting helplessly by.

In the fall of 1864, Long Tom was living with Hiram. He started home with Carroll to Illinois on a wagon. The second night out, they camped at Russellville, Ky., during the night, Tom had a cardiac asthma attack and died the next day. He was buried at Russellville. At this time, no one has been able to find the exact location of Tom's grave, although many have searched.

Long Tom was known as the forefather of all the Simmons' living in Illinois and Tennessee.

Notes for NANCY ELIZABETH SIMMONS: It is my theory that Nancy Elizabeth Simmons is the daughter of Franklin and (Miss Bradley). I have and am continuing to research this, so far with no documentation. It is believed by many that Nancy was the daughter of Hiram and Martha Simmons, I am very confident that this is not correct and have no idea where this started. In the 1840 census there was only one male child living with Thomas and Lucy Simmons and at that time Franklin was the only child that was not married and with children of his own. Some time between the 1840 census and the 1850 census, Franklin got married, he died between 1846-1849, I do not know about his wife, but in the 1850 census Nancy is living with Thomas and Lucy, not as a child, but a grandchild. I believe that her parents passed away and she went to live with her grandparents at that time. Many of the closer family also believe that she was not Hirams, but they are not sure who her parents were. After much research and hard work, we have confirmation that Nancy is indeed the daughter of Franklin and Mary Bradley Simmons. I have gotten information from William Day, a Gr. Grandson of Nancy's and he has written information from his grandmother, Dora A. Meador Mooningham as to these facts. She gave us Mary's name as no one ever had her first name.
