I have compiled a service record for Orville H. Freedle from regimental histories and a surprisingly large amount of information, for a private.

Orville H. Freedle enlisted with the 2nd TN Infantry on May 6, 1861 in Company "I". The commander of the regiment was William B. Bate, later a major general. The regiment was mustered in at Lynchburg, Virginia on May 12, 1861. Freedle was put in the hospital on May 14 with typhoid. However, he rejoined his regiment to fight at first Bull run on July 21.

In December he was discharged from duty due to typhoid and sent home. Orville was captured by U.S. forces during his recovery and carried to Nashville. He was held there for two months. Orville refused to take the oath of allegiance, but was released due to his ill health.

In September 1862, when the 9th TN Cavalry was organized, Orville Freedle enlisted in company "C".

The 9th TN fought in the Battle of Hartsville Tn, in December as part of John Hunt Morgan's command. Orville Freedle was wounded in action. He was at home in Sumner County, Tennessee recovering when he was captured again by the enemy on May 29, 1863. Freedle thus missed Morgan's Ohio raid, where most of the 9th TN was taken prisoner in July.

As for Freedle, he was first taken to Louisville, Kentucky for processing. Then sent with other prisoners to Camp Chase an Ohio prison camp. On June 29 he was ordered transferred to Fort Delaware and arrived there on July 14. He spent the rest of the war there and was paroled on June 9, 1865, after giving his oath of allegiance.

He is listed in one P.O.W. record as being age 24, 5 feet 8 inches with dark hair dark eyes and dark complexion.

Orville H. Freedle is the son of James Freedle and Susannah Boyle. Orville was born in 1828. He died in February 21, 1922. Orville married 1st to Martha Ann Roney on January 10, 1850. Martha Ann was born June 1, 1830, she died January 14, 1859. Orville married 2nd to Nancy E. Stovall. Nancy was born in 1842, she died in November 12, 1918.
