Colonel Humphrey Bate

Colonel Humphrey BATE was born January 16, 1779 in North Carolina. His parents were James BATE, born 1747 and died 1787 (James was a Revolutionary War soldier), and Mary E. SPIVEY, born 1758 and died 1838. Humphrey arrived in Sumner County, Tennessee, in the late 1790s or very early 1800s. He participated in the War of 1812. He was one of a group of men in a company of Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry commanded by Colonel COFFEE, Troop #3, commanded by Captain John BASKERVILLE, Natchez Expedition, 1812.

The Hartsville Union Masonic Lodge No. 113 of Free and Accepted Masons was organized in 1845 with Col. Humphrey BATE as the first Worshipful Master. He served as Worshipful Master until 1848, when he was succeeded by John HUTCHINS.

Colonel Humphrey and his family moved to Texas around 1848 and stayed there until the end of 1852. Then he moved back to Sumner County with all his children, except two who stayed in Texas, married, where they remained until their death. Humphrey remained in Sumner County at the Old Bate Home Place in Castalian Springs (which is still standing) until he died September 1, 1856. He and his second wife Anne Franklin WEATHERRED Bate, are buried at the Old Bate Home Place.

He first married Elizabeth Pollock BRIMAGE, born 21 Oct 1777, and she died 16 Nov 1820. Humphrey and Elizabeth had the following children:

  1. JAMES HENRY BATE - born 25 Nov 1804 - died 14 Apr 1842. James married Amanda Patience WEATHERRED, born 19 Nov 1806 in Sumner County, and died 14 Apr 1870. Amanda WEATHERRED was the sister of Anne Franklin WEATHERRED, who later married Col. Humphrey BATE, James' father. A father and a son married two sisters. James and Amanda had four children: William Brimage, Humphrey Pollock, Elizabeth Patience, and James Henry. Their son, William Brimage BATE grew up to be a General in the Civil War, later he was Governor of Tennessee, then Senator from Tennessee.

  2. Eliza Mary BATE - born 9 Dec 1807 - died 31 May 1808

  3. William Brimage BATE - born 2 Jun 1809 - died 5 Nov 1812

  4. Thomas West BATE - born 1 Jun 1812 - died 26 Apr 1839

  5. Harriet Frances BATE - born 18 Jul 1814 - died 2 Aug 1814

Colonel Humphrey BATE's second wife was Anne Franklin WEATHERRED, born 7 Sep 1804, died 1870. They were married 9 Sep 1821 in Sumner County, Tennessee. They had the following children:

  1. MARY ELIZA SPIVEY BATE - born 4 Jun 1823 - died 1 Sep 1883. She married Robert Hugh Mercer SMITH 3 Jun 1844. They had children James Humphrey, Robert S. and Patience E.

  2. EUGENIA PATIENCE BATE - born 6 Sep 1826 - died 9 Dec 1906, Davidson County. Eugenia was married twice. Her first husband was Council Rogers BASS, born 1810 in North Carolina, and died 2 May 1855 in Leota, Washington Co., Mississippi. Eugenia and Council had four children: Ella Anne, Eugenia Elizabeth, Council W. Rogers, Jr., and Anna Lela. After Council ROGERS SR. died, Eugenia married Count Guiseppi BERTINATTI, Italian Ambassador to the United States. She traveled back and forth across the Atlantic with the Count many times. She became a Countess and met Abraham Lincoln and other high government officials through her husband's activities as the Ambassador to the U. S. Government. Countess Eugenia and Count Guiseppi had no children.

  3. WILLIE ANNE BATE - born 17 Oct 1828 - died 12 Oct 1859, in San Augustine, Texas. She married Noel G. ROBERTS 22 Jul 1852 and they had two children, Maggie, and John C.

  4. WILLIAM GEORGE WEATHERRED BATE - born 2 Apr 1831 - died 7 Jan 1912, in San Augustine, Texas. He married Margaret DAVIS, 5 Oct 1859, in Texas, and they had seven children: Elizabeth "Lizzie", Willie Anne, Humphrey, Margaret, Mary, Tom Davis, and Henry Humphrey.

  5. AGNES ELIZABETH BATE - 21 Sep 1834 - died after 1917, Rutherford County, Tennessee. She married Isaac N. WRIGHT, 21 Dec 1856, in Sumner Co., TN. they had six children: Emma, John, Ed, William Bate, Joseph Bertinatt "Bertie", Pearl.

  6. AMANDA MALVINA BATE - born 23 Oct 1836 - died 23 Jul 1872. She married first, Anaskew BASS 15 Mar 1857. He died After 1861. They had two children: Alonzo "Lonnie" and William (Willie). Amanda secondly married Alfred SHOULDERS, born 1835 and died 1869. Their marriage date was 1863. They had one child: Thomas Alfred. Amanda thirdly married William POLK in 1870. They had a daughter: Mary Eliza "Mamie".

  7. HENRY CLAY BATE - born 28 Jul 1839 - died 2 May 1917 in Davidson Co. Henry first married Rosabelle SIMONTON, 16 Jan 1866, in Nashville, Davidson Co., Tennessee. They had two daughters: Ella and Mary. Henry secondly married Minniehaha WILLIAMS, 28 Apr 1890. They had two sons: Henry Clay and Stanley. Minniehaha died in 1901. Henry thirdly married Nellie Boone FREEMAN, 3 Mar 1902. They had two children: William Brimage and Katherine.

  8. HUMPHREY HOWELL BATE SR., M. D. - born 1 Feb 1844 - died 8 Jun 1911. Humphrey died at the Old Bate Home in Castalian Springs and is buried at the Gallatin Cemetery. He first married Martha Ann FRANKLIN, born 1846, Trousdale County, died 11 Feb 1871. They had no children. Humphrey secondly married Nancy Drucilla SIMPSON, born 29 Sep 1840 in Tipton Co., TN; died 4 Mar 1925 at the Old Bate Home Place in Castalian Springs. She is buried in the Gallatin Cemetery. Her parents were William SIMPSON, died 1840; and Nancy COOK, born 1804, died 1853. Humphrey and Nancy had four children: Humphrey Howell Jr., Anne, and two stillborn sons.

  9. AARON SPIVEY BATE - born 30 Apr 1846 died 8 Jun 1863. Lieutenant Aaron Spivey BATE, at age 17, General William B. BATE'S volunteer aide, died from exposure and exhaustion as a result of the Battle of Stones River in the Civil War.
