Capt. L. C. ARMISTEAD, farmer in Hendersonville, Tenn., was born near Florence, Ala, in 1842. He is one of nine children of G. G. and Alice V. (FOUNTAIN) ARMISTEAD. The father, of English origin, was born in Loudon County, VA., in 1812. A farmer and planter, he purchased of Chief COLBERT a portion of the land reserved by Andrew JACKSON for the Creek Nation, in Lauderdale County, Ala., where he farmed until his death in 1866. The mother, of French origin, born in the same county as her husband, in 1815, died in 1842; educated at Florence Western University and at the United States Naval School, appointed through Hon. G. S. HOUSTON, he went to Memphis on the secession of Tennessee, and assisted in raising Company D, of which he was elected first lieutenant. He then joined the Fourth Tennessee Infantry, under Col. NEALY, and after Shiloh was made captain. He was in the battles of Belmont (Mo.) Island No. 10, Shiloh, Munfordsville, Perryville (Ky.) Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, and in all the retreat to Atlanta, Franklin, and Nashville. He was captured twice, but escaped. After his parole he began farming. At Louisville, Ky., in 1867, he married Rosalie, daughter of Hamilton R. and Jane M. (MCFARLAND) DOBBIN, born in Louisville in 1845. Their eight children are Jennie D., Harry G., Lewis H., Mary M., Carter B., George M., Charles H., and Rosalie. His wife died in 1885. She was a Presbyterian, of which church Capt A. is an elder. Four of his children, Jennie, Hattie, Hamilton and Mary, are also members. Capt. A. is a free trade Democrat. He has lived in his present home since 1883.
