"THE LIFE OF REV. ALEXANDER CHAPMAN"
by REV. MILTON BIRD, DD

Nashville, TN: Published for the author by W. E. Dunaway, agent,
C.P. Board of Publication, 41 Union Street, 1872

Philip Chapman was born in or about London. The father off Philip Chapman was for a long time a merchant in that city and a man of conciderable wealth. There were 4 children in this family, 3 sons and one daughter.

The two older sons engaged in business with the father, the youngest was sent to school in France, the daughter to Spain. While the father was left alone in London, he died, and before the children were contacted and brought back to London, the whole estate was seized and sold by the gonvernment.

Philip Chapman went to Ireland where he engaged in the wool-combing business for a livelihood. What became of his sister and brother is not known. Nor is it known how long he lived in Ireland, but not many years.

The exact time Philip Chapman reached Americea is not known, but it must have been in the early part of the l700's, at least in the course of the first half. He first settled in the state of New Jersey. Whilst there, he was married; to whom the writer is not informed. He removed to Pennsylvania and settled in Bucks Co, about 50 miles from Philadelphia. He died and was buried in that county.

He raised a family of 2 sons and 2 or 3 daughters. The name of the eldest was James and the youngest Benjamin. One daughter married a Mr Chaffler and moved to Virginia, the other a Brown, and went to Ohio.

James Chapman married Martha Kirkpatrick, Benjamin a Miss Acers , when we are not certain. James must have been married long before his younger brother. He principally raised and educated Benjamin who was quite young when his father died. James was a soldier of some prominence in the Revolutionary War. He was entitled to a sword from the government. The tassel was shot from the hilt of his sword at the battle of Long Island. He served several campaigns during the War. In l783 he moved to Prince Edward Co, Virginia where he was called into the service again; but Mrs. Chapman was near confinement, and Benjamin being about the age to serve his country in arms, took his brother's place.

Here James Chapman continued to live until he removed to Tenessee. He arrived Dec 24th, l797, at Kings Station, about 2 miles south of where Gallatin now stands.

James Chapman had a family of 9 children: Philip, the eldest, Alexander, John, Martha, Samuel, James, Benjamin, William and Mary. Mary unfortunately fell to her death into a vessel of boiling water!

James was a ruling Elder in the Presbyterian church. In l8l7 Benjamin Chapman moved to Williamson Co Tennessee where in l845 he died.
