Mary Ann WALTON (daughter of Josiah WALTON and Sarah WALKER) was born 22 January 1820 in Sumner County, Tennessee, and died 20 August 1881 in Fresno County, California. She married Tyree Harris (General) BELL 02 December 1841 in Sumner County, Tennessee, son of Absalom BELL and Susan (BELL) HARRIS.

SOUTH TO WEST, Margaret Bell Harrell Farnham, 1947, page 15: "Grandmother Bell died soon after we moved to the new home on the plains. She was rather small of stature with a keen sense of humor, in fact something of a practical joker. She always found a way to accomplish a purpose. She could always find a substitute when what she required was not available."page 8: "My first lesson in politeness I learned from grandmother. After supper in the winter the family would gather in her room for a few moments. There was always a roaring fire in the fireplace. Her bed was one of those high post massive beds, double castors on all the posts, too heavy for any housemaid to move and was never placed close to the wall. I well remember squeezing between that bed and the wall when I wanted to cross over from one side of the fireplace to the other, because she had told me it was impolite to pass or stand between anyone and the fire or light."
