Charles Baker III was born about 1741, MD. He married 16 Dec. 1762, St. John's Parish, Baltimore Co. MD, Elizabeth Wheeler b. about 1745, d/o Leonard Wheeler and Ann Bond Elizabeth's grandfather was a Quaker of Hartford Co., MD. Both the Bonds and the Wheelers were families of great wealth and prominence. According to THE WHEELER FAMILY OF CHARLES COUNTY, MARYLAND, by Walter V. Ball, Leonard Wheeler, born 18 Sept. 1722, will probated 30 Jan. 1747, married 16 Feb. 1741/2 in St. George's Parish, Ann Bond. Leonard was the son of Benjamin (c. 1685-1741) and Elizabeth Wheeler. Benjamin was the son of Thomas Wheeler (1660-1735). Thomas' wife is unknown. He must have been a disagreeable person as he was involved in many court actions with his neighbors. Thomas Wheeler was the son of John Wheeler (1630-1693/4), who arrived in Maryland in Jan. 1652. He purchased a land warrant in 1654 but did not exercise his rights until 1658, the year Lord Baltimore was restored to power. John Wheeler's will, signed 11 Nov. 1693 and proved 8 Jan. 1694, is found in Will Book No. 7, Fol. 70.

Charles Baker III was not left any property in his father's will, possibly because he had migrated to Tennessee. He purchased a Revolutionary War land grant in 1791 in what was then North Carolina. This land, which was located in Davidson Co., was deeded to his son Isaac in 1796 shortly before Charles died. Charles' will is recorded in Davidson Co., Book 2, p. 47, 5 Aug. 1796. Elizabeth Wheeler Baker m.2. a Jacob Dickinson. Charles' will mentions sons Nathan, Zack, Isaac and daughters Nancy Constable, Betsy Bell, and Charity Perry. Elizabeth Dickenson's will, Sumner Co., TN, Pom. Lib. p. 16, 14 June 1824, mentions grandson King Lutin, grandson Josiah Perry, grandson Isaac Perry, granddaughter Ann Baker, grandson Leonard Perry and son-in- law John Perry in addition to children named in Charles III's will. Isaac Walton was the executor. The family Bible gives her death date as 14 Aug. 1824.

Children of Charles III and Elizabeth Baker:

  1. Providence Baker m. King Lutin - Elizabeth Baker Dickinson' will mentions grandson King Lutin. Will of King Lutin, 6 Feb. 1837, mentions wife Anna, sons King, James, Frederich, Thomas and Charley and dau. Mary. Connie Moretti of Redondo Beach, CA, says there is a marriage record in Chowan Co., NC, 13 July 1798 between King Luten and Anne Hoskins. Connie also says that according to "It Is a Goodly Land, A History of Goodlettsville", King Luton Sr. came to Sumner County about 1813, settling near Station Camp Creek. He was born in 1763 in Chowan County, NC, the son of James and Mary King Luton. King married 19 Aug. 1784, in Baltimore City, MD, Providence Baker. (The book says she was also a native of Chowan Co.) They had three children, the youngest was King Luton, Jr. b. 21 July 1792, Chowan Co., NC. Providence died the following year. It was King Luton, Jr. who married Caroline Walton in Sumner Co., 8 Oct. 1813, signed by John Perry. Caroline Walton was the daughter of Isaac Walton, sister of William who married Isaac Baker's daughter Matilda.

  2. Elizabeth Baker m. Mr. Bell - maybe the George Bell in TN in 1791

  3. Charity Baker m. 7 Jan. 1794 Davidson Co., TN, John Perry, son of Thomas & Catharine Perry - John Perry purchased land in Sumner Co., TN, from Robert Hays between 1793-1797. Callie Weisiger says Charity and her family remained in the Nashville area and named the following children:

    3. Levi Baker married Catherine (Kitty) Walton (1804-aft. 1860) d/o Isaac Walton and Catherine Perry.

Mrs. Weisiger says that he fought in the Revolution but the National Archives has no record of him. If he is the same Levi found on the 1830 census for Sumner County, TN, he was born after the Revolution. His age was given as between 30 and 40 and that of his wife between 20 and 30. The family consisted of 1 male and 1 female under 5 years of age and 1 male between 10 and 15. (The confusion here is likely due to the fact that a Levi Baker purchased a R.W. grant earned by a John Rice in 1787. It was not likely even the same Levi Baker.) Connie Moretti of Redondo Beach, CA, says Levi A. Baker was born 1798 d. 1867, Sumner Co. and fills in children:

      Children per Mrs. Weisiger are:

      1. Lycurgus A. Baker b. 1826 married 29 July 1859 Sumner Co., Susan E. Joyner
