Other researchers have some different information on this family which is partially or wholly erroneous.

William Bain, born 1749-1760 (from the 1830 Blount Co., TN Census) emigrated to this country prior to the Revolutionary War. He married Sarah Elizabeth McCorkle (nee Greer) in the mid 1780s; no record of the Greer-McCorkle or McCorkle-Bain marriage exists. Sarah had a son, Joel McCorkle, from her first marriage. William and family moved to Blount Co., TN c1795. William received a state land grant 6-16-1810 for 207+ acres in Blount Co. - perhaps for the land he already occupied. Some of the children of William and Sarah were born in NC prior to the family move to Blount Co. The following family has been reconstructed from various printed records. Question marks (??) Indicate less reliable information.

  1. Mary Bain - born 1784-1785; married James Woody, brother of Susannah Woody (see #3 below), 9-25-1817 in Roane Co., TN.
  2. Margaret Bain (??) - born 1785-1790; married Andrew Cromwell 1-15-1829 in Blount Co., TN (perhaps his second marriage).
  3. Daniel Bain - born 1788 in NC; married first Susannah Woody c 1812 in Blount Co., TN; married second Eliza ? after death of Susannah 10-18-1854; died 1-7-1867. [Court records indicated that Daniel was a brother of #4 John Ramsey Bain.]
  4. John (Ramsey) Bain - born 6-12-1792 in Mecklenburg Co., NC (John later added the middle name Ramsey after a Rev. Ramsey); married first Nancy Donnell, daughter of Thomas Donnell, in Davidson Co., TN; Nancy died 4-24-1829 and John Ramsey married second Sarah Elliott Crockett, daughter of Samuel Crockett and Joannah Sayers, 11-5-1829 in Davidson Co., TN; died 6-19-1868 in Sumner Co., TN. [A family history similar to a family bible identifies John as son of William.]
  5. Leonard B. Bain (??) - born 1789-1800; name of wife unknown; possibly died between 1830 and 1840. [Leonard was listed in the 1830 Sumner Co., TN Census and not thereafter with wife and four young children. These four children plus a fifth (possibly born in 1840) might have been listed with John R. Bain in the 1840 Davidson Co., TN Census. These five children were not John Ramsey Bain's. There was a Leonard Greer in the Mecklenburg Co., NC area who may have been closely related to Arthur Greer.]
  6. William Bain, Jr. - born 10-15-1795 in Kannapolis, NC; married first Mary Hannah Stephenson, daughter of Joseph Stephenson, 9-14-1819 in Blount Co., TN who died 3-20-1851; married second Feraby Cagle 11-6-1851 in Monroe Co., TN; moved to Monroe Co., TN and then Polk Co., TN where he died 11-20-1881. [The William E. Bain Family Letter published in the December 1996 issue of "Tennessee Ancestors" mentions the relationship of William Bain, Sr., John Ramsey Bain, and William Bain, Jr.]
  7. James Bain (??) - born 1-6-1798; married Sarah Brewer, daughter of William Brewer; moved to Henderson Co., TN and Madison Co., TN; died 2-17-1871 in Madison Co., TN. [According to descendants of James Bain, Sarah Brewer was Cherokee. Blount Co., TN was originally adjacent to Cherokee lands to the south.] [Another reference (detailed in Message 1592 Bain Family Genealogy Forum - GenForum) states "While enroute to Tennessee with the caravan, I (James Bain as a small boy) became lost from the group and was never able to find them. I was never able to get any information about where the group went and therefore became the only known living member of my family. I married in Tennessee and reared my family there."
  8. Arthur Bain - born 1801 in Tennessee; married Elenor McPherren 5-14-1819 in Roane Co., TN; moved to Knox Co., TN, Monroe Co., TN, and McMinn Co., TN; died in McMinn Co., TN c1867. ["A Reminiscent History of the Ozark Region" mentions William Bain, Sr., John Ramsey Bain, and Arthur Bain.]

John Ramsey Bain was a prominent Presbyterian minister in the Nashville, TN area. Much of the following comes from the "Minutes of the Presbytery of Nashville" dated 9-26-1868which came from a sketch prepared beforehand by John Ramsey himself. His father, William, was a native of Scotland. John was the fourth child who was "very delicate" for five or six years and became handicapped. The family was therefore determined to send him to school as they did not believe he could support himself by manual labor. John's next-door neighbor, Rev. James Witherspoon, a Presbyterian minister, invited him to his house and instructed him in English Grammar and Latin. John soon assisted Rev. James Witherspoon in teaching others until the Reverend died. John then went to Ebenezer Academy in Knox Co., TN where he was taught by Rev.O'Neil G. Ramsey, assisted him, and worked on the farm. After three years Rev. Ramsey gave up teaching due to failing health. John Bain soon adopted Ramsey as his middle name. He then went to Washington College, TN where he graduated in March 1818.

John Ramsey Bain joined the Presbytery of Abingdon and studied theology under Dr. Samuel Doak. He was licensed to preach in 1819 and went to Fayetteville, TN where he taught and preached for eighteen months. He then went to Gallatin where he took charge of the Academy and preached in the Gallatin and Shiloh Churches. In 1836 he moved to Nashville, TN where he remained through the Civil War. The Union forces burned his house and he lost his property. In failing health he returned to Gallatin where he died 6-19-1868.

John Ramsey Bain had a total of eleven children with his two wives. He and Nancy Donnell had three daughters:

  1. Eliza Bain - born 10-8-1823 in Sumner Co., TN; died 5-5-1888.
  2. Harriet N. Bain - born 5-9-1825 in Sumner Co., TN; married Cullen E. Douglass, son of William Howard Douglass and Sarah Edwards, 5-4-1848 in Sumner Co., TN; died 12-20-1862; Cullen then married Mary E. Estes.
  3. Sophia Bain - born 4-13-1827 in Sumner Co., TN; married Francis A. Sporer 1-23-1853 in Sumner Co., TN.

Nancy Donnell Bain died 4-24-1829 in Sumner Co., TN and John Ramsey Bain then married Sarah Elliottt Crockett and they had eight children:

[The widow of John Ramsey Bain moved to Haywood Co., TN also.]
