BARKER, ROBERT TAYLOR PINEY FLATS - Robert Taylor Barker, 83, died April 9, 2002, at his residence. He was the son of the late Hatfield and Julia Mayo Barker, and had been a resident of the Bristol area for the past 41 years. He was an office and machine supplies salesman. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Survivors include his wife, Jean Cadle Barker; daughters and sons-in-law Debbie and Mike LaMoure of Piney Flats, Kathy and Ron Barricklow of Piney Flats and Kim and Brian Lanham of Bluff City; son Mike Barker of Piney Flats; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. BELCHER, GREGORY LYNN "GREG" Gregory Lynn "Greg" Belcher of Bristol, Tenn., died Friday, April 19, 2002, in Wellmont Hospice House. He was a native of Abingdon and lifelong resident of the Bristol area. He was formerly employed by Bristol International Raceway, was of the Baptist faith and he was preceded in death by his father, Earl R. Belcher. Survivors include his wife of 21 years, Terri Beard Belcher; son, Chad Eric Belcher; mother, Ruth Belcher; brothers David Belcher, Steve Belcher, Mike Belcher, Timmy Belcher, Joey Belcher and Rick Belcher; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Beulah and George K. She was the daughter of the late William R. and Virginia Henson Buckles. She was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area and had worked in the medical field all of her life. BOLING, LANNIE KATHERINE SHAFFER Lannie Katherine Shaffer Boling, 78, of 2217 Bradley St., Bristol, Va., died Thursday, April 4, 2002, in Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area, born May 7, 1923, and the daughter of the late Joe and India Shaffer. BOWERY, MILDRED C. Mildred C. Bowery, 86, went to be with her Lord at 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 26, 2002, surrounded by family and friends at her home. A lifelong resident of Sullivan County, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin Joseph Cain and Sarah Kathryn Lane Cain. Mrs. Bowery was a member of Beulah Baptist Church and Gleaners Sunday School Class. She previously attended Holston Senior Citizens and Beulah Senior Citizens. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Thomas (J.T.) Bowery; five sisters, Mae Cox, Leona Millsap, Pearl Rowland, Emma Lady and Hazel Cain; and one brother, William (Bill) Cain. BREWER, FRED ARVEL Rev. BLOUNTVILLE - Rev. Fred Arvel Brewer Sr., 59, of 598 County Home Road, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, April 20, 2002. He was a native of Johnson County but had lived in Sullivan County for 22 years. He was the son of the late Tom and Bertha Brewer. He was a Freewill Baptist minister for 31 years. He had pastored several churches in Johnson City, Washington County and Sullivan County, Tenn. He sang with his family in churches all over North Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ernest Brewer and Rev. Bill Brewer. Survivors include: wife, Betty Hilliard Brewer; daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Rev. Steve Davis, Limestone; three sons and daughters-in-law, Fred Arvel Brewer Jr. and Lisa, Blountville, Rev. CALEB, A. S. K. Rev. GRAY, Tenn. - Reverend A.S.K. Caleb, 67, went peacefully to be with the Lord at home Monday, April 15, 2002, at 8:52 a.m. Reverend Caleb was born in India on Oct. 18, 1934, a son of the late Sidambaram and Nallamal. He had lived in the Gray community for the past six years and was a member of the Mercy Seat Ministries. He was a seminar graduate and received a degree in mechanical engineering. He planned churches in India, Burma, South Wales, Singapore and England. He was loved and respected around the world. He was a missionary in Southeast Asia. He is survived by his wife, Victoria Caleb of the home; a son, Jeremiah Rajaratnam Caleb of Gray; two sisters, Jyothi and Meena, both of India; a brother, Siva, of India; mother-in-law, Florence Caldwell; and many adopted and spiritual children, nieces, nephews and grandchildren. Born April 26, 1954, in Kingsport, a daughter of the late William Isaac and Arlie Faye Holt Fleenor, she has resided in this area all of her life. Mrs. Carrier was a 1972 graduate of Sullivan Central High School. She has worked as a hairdresser and had been employed at Grand Home Furnishings. Mrs. Carrier was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by a special friend, Sheri Osborne. CROSS, NELLIE "BILLIE" SPARGER Nellie "Billie" Sparger Cross, 81, of 400 Shelby St., Apartment 407, Bristol, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord Saturday, April 13, 2002, at Wellmont Hospice House. She was the daughter of the late Winston and Lola Smith Sparger. She was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area and was a former employee of Big Jack Manufacturing. She attended church and meetings at Fort Shelby Apartments and, when able, attended Higher Ground Fellowship Church of God, where she was loved by many. She was the widow of Orb Martin Cross. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Lana Gail and William Joyner of Bristol, Tenn.; son and daughter-in-law, Jerry M. and Thea L. HARLOW, WILLIAM H. "BILL" William H. (Bill) Harlow, 87, of Bristol, Tenn., went to be with the Lord on Monday, April 15, 2002, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was the son of the late Luther and Meddie Harmon Harlow and was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area. He had retired from Burlington Industries and was a U. S. Army veteran, serving in World War II. He was a member of Open Door Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Henry Harlow, Jim Harlow and Bynam Harlow; and two sisters, Rosie Barnett and Dorothy Harlow. Survivors include: wife, Georgia Harlow; son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Henna Harlow; daughters and sons-in-law, Sandy and Harold Sheffield and Teresa and Ronnie Feathers; brothers, Thurman Harlow and Grady Harlow; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. HARRIS, DOROTHY BEIDLEMAN "Dot" Dorothy (Dot) Beidleman Harris, 73, of 917 E. State St., Bristol, Tenn., died Thursday, April 25, 2002, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born in Bristol, Tenn., a daughter of the late Samuel L. and Florence Tiggs Beidleman and was preceded in death by her husband, Stephen R. Harris. She was a graduate of Slater School and received her bachelor of science at Livingston College, Salisbury, NC She received her masters at East Tennessee State University, Johnson City. She spent 47 years with the school system as coach, teacher, counselor and Dean of Women. She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta, Inc. Mrs. Harris retired from Sullivan County School System at Holston Middle School in 1995. She was a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Dorcas Circle. She is survived by a daughter, Stephanie Harris Freeman and her husband, Simin, of Bristol, Tenn.; two granddaughters, Nikki Morris and Monique L. Morris, both of Bristol, Tenn.; two great-grandchildren, Ebonie L. Morris and Michael S. Howard, both of Bristol, Tenn.; one sister, Elizabeth Harper of Bristol, Tenn.; one nephew, Marque D. HAYNES, Lt. Col. H. Jr. KIRKLAND, Wash. - Lt. Col. H. Haynes Jr., 73, U.S.A.F., Ret., died Saturday, April 20, 2002, in Kirkland. He was a native of Bristol Tennessee and attended Tennessee High School, Davidson College and the University of Tennessee. His parents, Mary Paine and Henry H. Haynes of Bristol, a sister, Mary Lynn Bibee, and a daughter, Marilyn Haynes Farrar, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, of Kirkland, sons, Hal H. Haynes III, of Charlotte, NC, William G. Haynes, Knoxville, Tenn., and a daughter, Casey Ann Morris, of Peachtree, Ga., a brother, David S. Haynes of Bristol, 12 grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews throughout the area. Hal served in the United States Air Force in a number of places throughout this country and overseas, including tours of duty in Japan, Pakistan, N. Dakota and Washington, DC He flew fighter planes during the Korean War. After that tour, he flew for General Curtis LeMay in the Strategic Air Command. For five years he taught at the University of Florida, in the Air Science ROTC program. He retired after 25 years of service to his country. In retirement, he followed his early interest in Bluegrass and country music, playing, usually with his own bands, the mandolin, fiddle, banjo, dobro and singing when allowed by his musical peers. He became a talented woodcarver. His major carvings, carousel horses, are now owned by his kin. Many of his other carvings are in the hands of the lovers of Jack Russell terriers, foxes and hounds. A memorial service is planned for Hal in Bristol sometime in the near future. Those wishing to do so may send memorial contributions to the charity of their choice or to River's Way, Outdoor Adventure Center, so that those young people among us who are handicapped, along with those who are not, may learn to love nature and participate in the outdoors together. HOUSER, GEORGE WASHINGTON KINGSPORT - George Washington Houser, 78, passed away Tuesday, April 2, 2002, at 4:15 p.m. in Johnson City Medical Center following an extended illness. George was a native of Blountville and a retiree of Mead Corp. with more than 35 years of service. He was of the Methodist faith but attended Old Kingsport Presbyterian Church. He was a 50-year member of Kingsport Masonic Lodge 688, Scottish Rite Club of Knoxville, Scottish Rite Club of Sullivan County and Liberty Chapter 198 of the Eastern Star, also A.W.A.K.E. (Sleep Apnea). He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mary Almaroad Houser; and two brothers and two sisters. George loved sports and all of God's little creatures. George was a kind sincere and devoted man whose smiling face brought joy to those he touched. JONES, JOSEPH WEBSTER NEWBERN, Tenn. - Col. Joseph Webster Jones Jr., Air Force (Retired), 83, died Friday, April 12, 2002, in Dyer Nursing Home in Dyer, Tenn. He was born in Bristol, Tenn., a son of the late Joseph W. and Lillian Reynolds Jones. He was a veteran of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He was a fighter pilot and career military officer in the Air Force and Defense Intelligence Agency. He served as air attaché in Oslo, Norway. He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee and Tulane University. He was president and trustee of the Tennessee Library Association and a member of the Daedalian Society. MONK, J. CHARLIE REV. JOHNSON CITY - Rev. J. Charlie Monk Jr., 84, died Sunday, April 14, 2002, in Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol. He was born in Erwin, Tenn., a son of the late James Charlie and Fannie Mae Toney Monk. In 1938, he graduated from Unicoi County High School. He received his bachelor of arts degree in Bible from Bob Jones College, Cleveland, Tenn., in 1942. Upon graduation he served as assistant pastor of First Baptist Church, Basset, Va., for four years. He then moved to Brinson, Ga., where he pastored for two years. Rev. Monk then moved to High Point, NC, and served as pastor of Brentwood Baptist Church for 39 years. He retired from the church in North Carolina and came to Bristol in 1990. Soon after his arrival he became pastor of Euclid Avenue Baptist Church, where he served until 1997. Once again he retired, but soon he accepted the position as interim pastor of Paperville Baptist Church, Bristol, Tenn., where he served until March 3, 2002. SMITH, CARL L. Carl L. Smith of 313 Mia Drive, Bristol, Tenn., died Tuesday, April 2, 2002, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was a native of Sullivan County and son of the late Walter and Hattie Hostchkiss Smith. He was owner and operator of S&S Motors, a U.S. Army veteran and of the Baptist faith. VITTATOE, ROY PINEY FLATS - Roy Vittatoe, 39, of 3597 Devault Bridge Road died Sunday, April 21, 2002, at his residence. A native of Michigan City, Ind., he was a son of William Vittatoe and the late Margie Lena Davis Preston. Mr. Vittatoe was a person who loved the Lord and his family and was of the Baptist faith. He loved to play music. WEBB, JAMIE LEE BLUFF CITY - Jamie Lee Webb, 86, of 231 Jonesboro Drive died April 3, 2002, at her residence following a lengthy illness. She was a native of Sullivan County and the daughter of the late Samuel and Daisey Alice Webb Boling. WILLS, RUTH L. HOPKINS VENICE, Fla. - Ruth L. Hopkins-Wills, 73, died April 18, 2002. She was born in Bristol, Tenn., and moved to Venice in 1948. She was a registered nurse and spent most of her life caring for others in Bradenton and Sarasota. She was a lifetime member of both DAV 101 of Nokomis and Eagles, Nokomis and of the Baptist faith. She graduated from nursing school in Jacksonville, Fla., in 1952. Surviving are a daughter, Marjorie "Penny" Keen of Nokomis; one son, Richard A. of Bristol, Tenn.; three sisters, Judy Holt of Bradenton, Virginia Tompkins of Bradenton and Diana Ayers of Sarasota; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
