ALMANY, BOBBY L. Bobby L. (Bob) Almany of New Canton, VA, died Tuesday, Dec 5, 2000. He was a retired Virginia State Trooper and was preceded in death by his wife, Janis Cowan Almany. He is survived by two sons: Charles H. Almany of Powhatan, VA, and R. Paul Almany and his wife, Mary, of Glen Allen, VA; one daughter: Alison A. Harding and her husband, Andy, of Powhatan; and three grandchildren: Amanda, Dillon and Summer. BAILEY, JAMES PERRY James Perry Bailey, 78, of Blountville died as the result of an accident on Tuesday, Dec. 12. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bertha and Ollie Bailey; and brothers, Charles and John Bailey. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Marceline; daughter and son-in-law, Debi and Rob Johnson of Kingsport; and step-grandchildren, Marti Johnson of Kingsport and Todd Johnson of Johnson City. He retired from Aladdin Plastics in Surgoinsville. Jim was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army in the Pacific. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Blountville. BAILEY, JAMES PERRY James Perry Bailey, 78, of Blountville, TN, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at home from injuries sustained in an accident. He had lived most of his life in Sullivan County, TN, was a retired employee with Aladdin Plastic and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Blountville and a U.S. Army veteran, serving during WWII. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bertha and Ollie Bailey. Survivors: his wife of 54 years, Marceline B. Bailey; daughter and son-in-law, Debi and Rob Johnson of Kingsport; step-grandchildren, Marti Johnson of Kingsport and Todd Johnson of Johnson City; two sisters, Kathleen Jordan and Nannie Kate White, both of Bristol, TN; three brothers: Harry Lee Bailey, Bristol, VA, Ellis Bailey, Crystal River, Fla., and Frank Bailey, Jackson, Miss.; and several nieces and nephews. BAILEY, WILLARD EARL Willard Earl Bailey, 81, of Bristol, TN, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born in Campbell County, TN, a son of the late Thomas Sanford Bailey and Della May Welch Bailey, and had lived in Bristol since 1950. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and retired from the Naval Reserves as a master chief petty officer after 36 years of active and reserve service. He attended LaFollette High School and Hiwassee College and received his B. S. degree from the University of Tennessee, with a major in agriculture and a minor in mechanics. He received his masters degree in vocational education from the University of Tennessee and taught in the Sullivan County School System for over 34 years. He was a member of the Tennessee, Virginia, Sullivan County and National Education Associations and was a charter member and charter president of the South Holston Ruritan Club. He was a member of Virginia Avenue United Methodist Church and the Men's Club and the United Sunday School Class of the church. He is survived by his wife, Clara Compton Bailey; a son, Ronald E. Bailey of Hong Kong; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 7 o'clock Tuesday evening in the chapel of Oakley-Cook Funeral Home with Rev. Laura Rasor officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home. The committal service will be conducted at 11 o'clock Wednesday morning in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum at Mountain View Cemetery. Entombment will follow. BAKER, MARGARET J. Margaret J. Baker, 74, of 112 Wright Lane, Bristol, TN, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2000, at her home. A native of Fairfax, VA, she had lived in the Bristol area for the past 23 years. She was a retired employee with the Holiday Inn with 11 years of service and was the widow of Daniel Upton Baker. Survivors include a son, Daniel "Danny" Riley Baker of Bristol, TN; a daughter-in-law, Kathy L. BAUMGARDNER, CHARLES ELMER Charles Elmer "Charlie" Baumgardner of Bristol, VA, died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, in the Hospice House. He was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area and a son of the Charles W. and Laura Harris Baumgardner. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in World War II, a member of the DAV Chapter 40 and past commander and member of the Honor Guard. He was a member and deacon of Bradley Street Baptist Church. BEYER, ROBERT VELATI Robert Velati Beyer, 76, of Bristol, TN, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, at his residence. He was a native of Atlantic City, NJ, and moved to Bristol from Washington, DC six years ago. He was a retired candy maker and an owner of Velati Candy Company. He attended St. Anne's Catholic Church and was preceded in death by a son, Gary Beyer. Survivors include his wife: Anna T. "Jean" Savacool Beyer; daughter: Catherine Simons of Bristol, TN; three sons: Lt. BLEVINS, DEANIE OLINGER MARION, VA -- Deanie Olinger Blevins, 57, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Blevins and her father, Thomas E. BLEVINS, MAMIE LEE WYATT PULASKI, VA -- Mamie Lea Wyatt Blevins, 69, departed this life early Saturday morning, Dec. 23, 2000, at Pulaski Community Hospital after a long illness. She was born March 11, 1931, in Sullivan County, TN, the daughter of the late Franklin Wyatt and Virginia Lou Phillips Wyatt. She was a devoted mother and beloved grandmother and great-grandmother of a very large family residing around the Pulaski community. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Avery Blevins; one grandson, Lee Blevins; four brothers, Clay Wyatt and Ray Wyatt, both of Ohio, Glenn Wyatt and Harold "Doc" Wyatt, both of Bristol, TN; and one sister, Margaret Gentry of Cookeville, TN. She attended the Peak Creek Mission of Prayer. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Frank (Dianne) Thompson; five sons, James Franklin Blevins, Freddie Wayne Blevins, Larry Junior Blevins and Ronald Gene Blevins, all of Pulaski, and Roy Lee Blevins of Grahams Forge; four sisters, Bill Johnson, Sheryl Trivett and Hattie Mae Rush, all of Bristol, TN, and Marie Moore of Stone Mountain, GA; one brother, Claude Wyatt of Bristol, TN; 17 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. BOGART, FLORENCE TILSON Florence Tilson (Flo) Bogart of Bristol, TN, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. Miss Bogart was a native of Erwin, TN, and a member of Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority. She was a retired teacher from Tennessee High School. BOLEN, ELBERT H. NEMOURS, WV -- Elbert H. Bolen Sr., 90, P. O. Box 44, died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, at Mountain View Retirement Home, Lebanon, VA. Born in Maybeury, WV, he was the son of the late Archie Lee and Ethel Hensley Bolen, and the widower of Lahoma Pardue Bolen. He was a member of the First Untied Methodist Church, Pocahontas, VA, a member of the Pocahontas Lions Club and retired from Lilly Construction Co. as a welder. He was formerly employed as a printer with Interchex, was an avid fisherman and greatly enjoyed the lake. BRIDGEMAN, JOSIE M. Josie M. Bridgeman, 91, of Tremont Avenue, Bristol, TN, died on Dec. 29, 2000, at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Rufus and Mattie McNamara, and had been in the Bristol area most of her life. She was a homemaker and the widow of William A. Bridgeman. BRYANT, MARGARET ELLEN Margaret Ellen Bryant of Bristol died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2000, at Asbury Center at Baysmont in Kingsport. She was born in Chilhowie, VA, a daughter of the late James Edward and Frances Belle Faris Bryant. She was a member of the Cradle Roll at Chilhowie Methodist Church. When she was 3 or 4 years old, the family moved to Marion. She attended the Marion schools, was a graduate of Marion College and received her masters degree from Radford University. Miss Bryant began her teaching career in a one-room school. She had lived in Bristol since 1941. She taught the first grade in elementary school for 43 years, 38 of which were at Fairmount School in Bristol, and retired in 1974. She was an active member of State Street United Methodist Church, where she served on the Administrative Board and the Board of Finance. She was president of the United Methodist Women and chaired various committees. Miss Bryant served as president of the Bristol Tennessee Retired Teachers Association where she helped establish the Retired Teachers Scholarship for Tennessee students interested in teaching. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary society for teachers, American Association of University Women, the U.W.C.A., the Teachers Bridge Club and the Women's Literary Club. She enjoyed reading gardening and hiking. She was a great lover of nature and, most of all, loved children and her church. Miss Bryant is survived by a special friend, Virginia Brockman of Kingsport; and two nieces, Sue Bryant Parker and Barbara Richardson, both of Roanoke. The funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at State Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Fred Dearing and Rev. Jane Nelson officiating. The committal service and burial in Round Hill Cemetery in Marion will be private. BUNN, NANCY RUTH KILGORE Nancy Ruth Kilgore Bunn died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, in Roanoke, VA. She was born May 5, 1911, in Wise, VA, and was the daughter of the late Charles T. and Martha Alice Sheppe Kilgore. The family moved to Bristol in 1920. Mrs. Bunn graduated with the Virginia High School Class of 1929 and later from Bristol Commercial College. She retired in 1983 as secretary and real estate broker from the Charles J. Lowry Agency and was for many years the secretary of the Bristol Board of Realtors. She received honors from the Virginia State Board of Realtors. Mrs. Bunn was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Bristol, the Friendship Sunday School Class and the Evelyn Lane Frost Group of the WMU. She had an abiding interest in the Haven of Rest Rescue Mission and was a member of its Women's Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Bristol Historical Society and the Classic Review Study Club. While living in the Roanoke Valley in recent years, Mrs. Bunn attended Greene Memorial United Methodist Church and participated in the Joy Sheffy Circle. She also attended meetings of the Roanoke Alliance for the Visually Enabled (RAVE). Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law: Kay B. and Richard Smith of Roanoke, VA; a grandson and granddaughter-in-law: Matthew R. and Wendy E. Smith of Richmond, VA; three great-grandchildren: Jarred Luke Smith, Sarah Lawren Smith and Thomas Richard Smith; two brothers and three sisters-in-law: Charles T. and Sara R. CASEY, TERRY ALAN BLOUNTVILLE, TN -- Terry Alan Casey, 39, went to be with the Lord early Friday, Dec. 22, 2000, as the result of injuries that he sustained in an automobile accident on Highway 11-W. Terry was born in Covington, KY, he was the son of Alan and Laverne Cullum Casey of Kingsport. Terry was a CRT and was employed by the Select Specialty Hospital in Bristol. Terry accepted the Lord as his Savior at Maple Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Rogersville. Terry was a proud father-to-be of his second child in May 2001. DENTON, CLYDE "SHORTY" Willie Clyde (Shorty) Denton, 86, of Blountville, TN, went peacefully to be with his Lord on Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, in Holston Valley Medical Center after a period of declining health. Shorty was born in Scott County, VA, on Feb. 2, 1914, the son of William Benjamin and Virgie Booher Denton. Shorty moved to Sullivan County at the age of 16. Shorty retired from Tennessee Eastman Company where he was foreman in building No. 120 of the CE Division after 30 years of service. He was a member of the Masonic Whiteside Lodge of Blountville. He was a member of Miller's Chapel Baptist Church. Born to the late Joseph Austin and Stella Nannie Clark Eads, he had moved back to Bristol 12 years ago from Richlands, VA, where he had lived since 1967. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, a member of the choir, on the finance committee and was active in the Food Bank of the church. GRUBB, JOHN H. KINGSPORT -- John H. Grubb, 67, went to be with the Lord Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000, in the Holston Valley Medical Center. John was born in Bristol, VA, March 27, 1933, a son of the late Andrew and Maggie Watson Grubb. John lived most of his life in Sullivan County. He was a veteran of the Korean conflict, serving with the United States Air Force. He was a retired foreman of Tennessee Eastman Company. Other than his parents, eight brothers and sisters preceded him in death. John was one of 13 children. John is survived by his wife of 36 years, Audrey Browder Grubb of Kingsport; his daughter, Debbie K. Gilliam of Kingsport; two grandchildren, Bryan Gilliam and April Gilliam of Kingsport; two sisters, Pauline Walls and Ida Luttrell; and two brothers, Andrew and Jessie Grubb. HENLEY, JOAN B. Joan B. Hensley, 69, of Tucson, AZ, passed away Dec. 6, 2000. She is survived by her husband, Gene O. Hensley and daughter Paula Hensley, of Tucson, AZ; sister, Betty Henry of Utica, NY,; and brother Edgar Foedish Jr. of Surprise, AZ. A longtime resident of Kingsport, Joan spent most of her life in radio and theater. She was managing director of the Olde West Dinner Theater, cultural arts director for the City of Kingsport responsible for starting programs such as Allandale Christmas Village, cultural programs for the deaf and Christmas Connection, an annual arts and crafts show and sale. She was well known as the owner/director of the successful Showboat Dinner Theater. She also established the Rollabout Theater, a senior citizen theater, several children's theater groups and wrote children's books. Joan was a member of Kiwanis and Altrusa. She received numerous awards for outstanding service from various community and professional organizations and served on the Grovernor's Committee for Employment of People with Disabilities. KEGLEY, JAMES CECIL HUNTERSVILLE, NC -- James Cecil Kegley, 60, died Friday, Dec. 29, 2000, as a result of an accident. He was born June 16, 1940, in Wytheville, VA, to Ruth Shupe Kegley and the late Howard Slemp Kegley. He was a graduate of Bristol Virginia High School Class of 1958 and Virginia State Police Academy. McCLAIN, CARL W. "RED" KINGSPORT, TN -- Carl W. "Red" McClain, 81, of 921 Glade Mill Road, Kingsport, died at 2:15 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 21, 2000, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center. A lifelong resident of Sullivan County, he served with the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. McClain retired from Mead Corporation after more than 30 years of service. MONTGOMERY, JAMES D. James D. Montgomery, Jr., 66, of Bristol, TN, died on Dec. 10, 2000, at his residence. He was the son of the late James D. and Pearl Collins Montgomery and had been in the Bristol area for 23 years. He was a graduate of Northwestern University where he was active in the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity and obtained his master's degree at Mercer University. He was retired from the U.S. Army where he served as a lieutenant colonel with the Chemical Corps. He served in the Vietnam War in 1968 and 1969. Mr. Montgomery had worked at H&R Block as district manager and was an enrolled agent for Bristol and Southwest Virginia. He was also very active with the Republican Party where he served as financial chairman for Jim Holcomb's campaign and treasurer for both the Gil Hodges and Bob Icenhour campaigns. After his retirement from H&R Block he became very active with Heritage Antiques and Collectibles and was an avid gardener. He was a member and elder at First Christian Church where he served on the Stewardship Committee, was chairman of the board and sang in the choir. He graduated from both the McCallie School and Georgia Institute of Technology. He formed the Nickels-Saacke Corporation in Bristol Tennessee, specializing in real estate, building and development. Mr. Nickels was a former member of First Presbyterian Church, Bristol County Club, the Bristol Board of Realtors and the Lions Club. He moved to Hilton Head in 1978, where he continued a career building home and condominiums. He as the president of Nickels and Associates of Hilton Head and was associated with Spinnaker Development Company. He was also a member of the South Carolina Board of Realtors. He is survived by his mother, Martha Nickels Preston, Grand Court, Bristol VA; four children, Dr. Michael Nickels and his wife, Kelly Kim, Hershey, Pa., Dr. Scott Nickels and his wife, Kelly, Nashville; Britt Nickels, Townsend, GA, and Lauren Nickels, Hilton Head. RHEA, THOMAS CLARKE LAWTON, OK -- Dr. Thomas Clarke Rhea died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000, in Southwestern Hospital in Lawton. He was born in Blountville, TN, a son of the late John Irvin and Retta Slagle Rhea, graduated from Holston High School in 1931, King College in 1935 and Louisville Seminary in 1938, receiving his MA degree from the Seminary in 1939. He began his pastoral work at Pisgah Presbyterian Church in Versailles, KY, and was executive of Lexington Ebenezer Presbytery, 1944-50. He served Rogersville Presbyterian Church as pastor for 20 years before serving as Holston Presbytery executive 1970-84. He served on the King College Board of Trustees for 15 years and received an honorary doctorate from King College in 1954. In 1982, he was elected moderator of the Synod of the mid-South. he retired in 1984. He was the widower of Bobbie Rhea. Surviving are three sons: Thomas Rhea Jr. of Franklin, TN, Robert Peter Rhea of Lawton and John I. Rhea III of Louisville; one brother, Dr. John Rhea of Louisville; one sister, Kate Tate of Blountville; one granddaughter; and five grandsons. Funeral services will be held Tuesday in Louisville. THOMAS, DALE E. Dale E. Thomas, 71, of Kingsport, TN, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, in the Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol, TN, after a period of declining health. Dale was born March 18, 1929, in Bristol, VA, a son of the late Arthur and Mary VanHook Thomas. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the U.S. Army. Dale retired in 1987 from the Tenite Department of the Tennessee Eastman Company as a mechanic, after 39 years of service. He was a member of the Colonial Heights Baptist Church and served as a deacon and was a member of the church choir. He was a kind sincere and devoted husband, father and grandfather. WORLEY, VERNA "LOUISE" Verna "Louise" Worley, 78, of Bristol, TN, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was a lifelong resident of Bristol and the widow of Herbert D. Worley Sr. She was a member of Bethel View Baptist Church. Mrs. Worley was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Worley Stufflestreet. WRIGHT, MILDRED SIMS Mildred Sims Wright, 87, died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at the home of a daughter, Naomi Pendergrass. She was born in Hiltons, VA, Scott County, and was a daughter of the late J. P. Sims and Elizabeth Jane Sims. She was a loving wife, mother and friend. She was a long-time member of Beech Grove United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, E.F. "Jimmy" Wright; two sisters, Carrie Sims and Eva Sims; and two brothers, Cecil Sims and Clarence Sims. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Naomi and Joe Dan Pendergrass, Patsy and Jerry Thomas; four sons and daughters-in-law, Johnny and Annie Wright, Jimmy and Betty Jo Wright, Larry and Lois Wright and Danny Wright. She is also survived by two sisters, Iva Staubus and Lucille Morris; and two brothers, Benny Sims and Pierce Sims. She is survived by 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren. She also leaves special friends Helen Draper, Eric Spicer, Harold and Dot Malone and Joyce Payne.
