ADAMS, HENRY J. Jr. Graveside services for Henry J. Adams Jr. will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Crumley Cemetery. Niles Kitzmiller will officiate. Mr. Adams, 70, of Old Jonesboro Road, Bristol, TN, died Saturday, June 10, 2000. He was a son of Hattie Mae Glover of Bristol TN and the late Henry James Adams Sr., and had spent most of his life in the Bristol area. He retired from the U.S. Air Force and also was a retired captain from the Bristol Tennessee Police Department. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, the American Legion and the American Association of Retired Persons. Surviving, besides his mother, are his wife, Edith Lucille Adams; a daughter, Cindy Adams of Bristol Tennessee; three sons, Larry A. Adams and Jeffrey D. Adams, both of Bristol Tennessee, and Thomas Harrigan of Johnson City; a brother, Jimmy Adams of Bristol Tennessee; a sister, Shelby Jean Dunn of Bluff City; three grandsons; and a granddaughter. Among survivors are grandsons Jonathan Harrigan and Brian Harrigan, both of Johnson City, and Brady Adams of Bristol Tennessee; and granddaughter Blackeley Adams of Bristol Tennessee. ADAMS, WILLIAM DAVID William David Adams, 57, of 735 Beechwood Drive, Bristol, TN, died Tuesday, June 13, 2000, at home. He was born in Saltville, VA, a son of the late Carl and Melinda Adams, and was formerly self-employed as a welder. Surviving are his wife, Juanita Vance Adams; two daughters, Janice Chafin and Joan Bunch, both of Bristol TN; two sons, Rusty Tillison of Bristol TN and Tony Tillison of Stuart's Draft, VA; five sisters, Edith Prater of Bristol Tennessee, Avonda Bryant of Vinton, VA, Jettie Anders and Carla Greer, both of Roanoke, Thea Cross of Tacoma, WA. and Lynn Krishner of Abilene, KS.; five brothers, Jerry Adams, Ray Adams and Kenny Adams, all of Saltville, Ned Adams of Bristol TN and Phil Adams of Okinawa, Japan; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. in Eastern Heights Presbyterian Church by Weaver Funeral Home. The Revs. Rick Light and Don Stanley will officiate. ALDERSON, THOMAS GENT BEECH MOUNTAIN, NC -- Funeral services for Thomas Gent Alderson will be conducted in mid-July, time not yet determined, in Arlington National Cemetery. Mr. Alderson, 76, died Tuesday, June 27, 2000, in Johnson City Medical Center. He was born in Norton, a son of the late Creed Flanary Alderson and Mary Ford Alderson. He lived in Wise County until the age of 12, when he moved with his family to Washington, DC. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran serving in the Pacific and Okinawa during World War II and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with gold cluster, two Silver Stars, seven air medals and a Purple Heart. Following military service, he moved to Miami where he was a pilot with National Airlines and later for Pan American. At age 59, he retired to Beech Mountain. Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Betty Thorn McCluer Alderson; a daughter, Betty A. Ingraham of Orono, Maine; two sons, Thomas M. Alderson of Nevada City, CA, and William C. Alderson of Miami; a sister, Anne M. Thompson of Springfield, VA; a brother, Creed F. Alderson Jr. of Asheville, NC; and eight grandchildren. Among survivors is aunt Cleo Stair; and "cousin" Robert Alderson. Mr. Alderson continued his love of flying in Miami where he was a pilot with National Airlines and later Pan American. He retired to Beech Mountain where he enjoyed many good years. He and his wife enjoyed the adventure and companionship of many beloved friends. ARNOLD, JAMES CLAUDE James Claude Arnold, of 53 Vance Drive, Bristol, TN, died Wednesday, May 31, 2000. He was a lifelong resident of Bristol. He was a son of the late Trigg Arnold and Mattie Rush Arnold. He was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are his wife, Helen Hess Arnold; three daughters, Elizabeth Arnold, Michelle Arnold and Betty Arnold; three sons, James Arnold, Landon Arnold and Trigg Arnold; four sisters, Loretta Malone, Lola Davis, Frances Stiltner and Rebecca Love; two brothers, Guy Arnold and George Arnold; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. ATWELL, RUBY BASHAM Ruby Basham Atwell, 82, of Bristol TN died Sunday, June 4, 2000, at home. She was born in Beckley, WV, a daughter of the late Rev. and Mrs. J. Lacy Basham. She had lived most of her life in Bristol. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and the widow of Carl H. Atwell. She was a graduate of Knoxville Business College and a retired employee of the Virginia State Employment Commission in Bristol, VA, with 35 years of service. Surviving are two sisters, Anne B. Thompson and Beulah B. McCray, both of Bristol Virginia; two brothers, Chalmer Lacy Basham and John Calvin Basham, both of Bristol TN; and several nieces and nephews. She was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area, a daughter of the late Eugene and Dollie Mae Rosenbalm, and a former employee of Peerless Woodworking. She was a member of Ryder Memorial Presbyterian Church and the widow of Adam Kyle Baumgardner. She was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area, a daughter of the late Tom and Maggie Bott. She was a retired certified nursing assistant with 22 years of service. She was a member of Belle Meadows Baptist Church, where she was a former Sunday School teacher. She was the widow of Ediley Robert "Ed" Blair. He was born in Bristol TN, a son of the late Andrew James Bouton and Sylvia Bouton Bouton. He was founder, owner and operator of AB&B Gas Inc. and a member of Central Holston Christian Church in Bristol, Tn. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He was a retired heavy equipment operator for Cooper Construction Co. She lived in Louisiana before moving to Bristol three years ago. She was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith. CROSS, EDWARD DALLAS PINEY FLATS, TN -- Edward D. Cross died Thursday, June 8, 2000, in Greystone Health Care in Blountville. He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee, where he was past president of the Vocational Agriculture Club. He taught school for several years in the Sullivan County School System and served five years in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He was a 4-H Club leader and past president of the Piney Flats Ruritan Club. He served on the executive board of UETHD and served 72,000 hours of volunteer service at the Fort Howard Veterans Hospital in Baltimore. He was a president of the Piney Flats Senior Citizens for many years and retired from Bethlehem Steel in 1972. He was a member of Poplar Ridge Christian Church. Surviving are several nieces and nephews. In accordance with Mr. Cross' wishes, there will be no service. Mr. Cross, 90, of Bristol TN, died Friday, June 16, 2000, in NHC Healthcare Center in Johnson City. A lifelong resident of the Bristol area, he was a son of the late David and Anna Carden Cross. He was a retired machinist with Monroe Calculating Machine Co. He was a member of Bethel View Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Myra Taylor Cross; a son, James Cross of Bluff City; four daughters, Joann Cooper, Judy Tolbert and Carolyn Harr, all of Bristol TN, and Barbara Hurt of Gainesville, FL.; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews. In the l930's, she began her amazing run of championship golf, winning the Women's Club Championship at the Country Club of Bristol 20 times from 1931-57, and there was no tournament held in three of those years. She was known for having played 45 holes in one day, 18 with the ladies in the morning and 27 with the men in the afternoon. This was in the days before golf carts. She continued to live a full life at Baysmont, playing Bridge and Scrabble until the week before her death. She was born in Washington County, VA, a daughter of the late Jack Snodgrass and Ida Worley Snodgrass, and had been a resident of The Cambridge House for many months. She was a member of East End Christian Church, Careful Gleaners Sunday School Class and Young Matrons Circle for many years. She had attended First Assembly of God, Lee Highway, Bristol, VA, for the past 10 years and was the widow of her husband of 63 years, Dewey D. Helton. Surviving are three daughters, June Tuell of Bristol Virginia, Frieda Smith of Meadowview, Va., and Glenna Padgett of Frederick, MD; a brother, Melvin Snodgrass; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was born in Memphis, a daughter of the late Frazier Albert and Mary Cleopatra Jeffrey Anderson, and moved to Bristol in 1925. She was the widow of Arthur E. "Dick" Reynolds. She was a life member of the Bristol Tennessee/Virginia YWCA, where she held all offices on the Executive Board and served as president for three terms. She was a life member of the National Federation of Music Clubs, where she served in many offices since 1930 and was a recipient of the Rose Ray Thomas Fellow Medallion. She served as president of the Virginia Federation of Music Clubs and served in all offices on their Executive Board. She served in all offices of the Executive Board of the Bristol Music Club and as president for three terms. She was past president of the Bristol Historical Association and the Sullivan County Historical Association. She was founder of the New Era Study Club of Bristol. And she was a Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts leader, serving on the local and district boards. Mrs. Anderson was a home nursing instructor for the American Red Cross, a member of Tennessee High School Band Boosters and past president of the PTA. She was a member of Phi Beta Music Fraternity-Sigma Phi, was church organist for 18 years at various churches and was a member and church organist at State Street United Methodist Church. She was past president of Tennessee Ornithology Society. Surviving are a daughter, Mary Ann Sheppard of Monroe, NC; a son, Arthur E. WRIGHT, MILLARD "BUDDY" Funeral services for Millard "Buddy" Wright will be conducted Sunday at 3 p.m. in Akard Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Rye Fleenor will officiate. Entombment will be in Mountain View Cemetery Mausoleum. Mr. Wright, 59, of 320 Reservoir St., Bristol, VA, died Friday, June 9, 2000, at home. He was born in Richlands but spent many years in the Bristol area. He was a retired coal miner and a U.S. Army veteran, serving as a Special Forces Green Beret. He attained the rank of staff sergeant and served two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was of the Pentecostal faith. Surviving are his wife, Norma Wright; five stepdaughters, Cindy Lawson of Bristol TN, Laura Davis of Bristol VA, Eve Coleman of Raven, VA, Roxane Beck of Piney Flats, TN, and Leigh Lawson of the home; a stepson, Joshua Lawson of the home; two daughters, Teresa Ferguson and Michelle Giddens, both of New Jersey; a son, Raymond Wright of Charlotte, NC; two sisters, Ruthy Taylor and Patricia Smith, both of Jacksonville, Fla.; three brothers, Larry Wright of Nashville, and Kyle Wright and Paul Wright, both of Richlands; 18 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Wright was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Wright; and two brothers, Wayne Wright and Grover C. Wright Jr. Pallbearers will be Chris Wright, Greg Wright, Eddie Jordan, Tony Dixon, Rudy Beck, Billy Deskins and Robby Jordan. Honorary pallbearers will be Kenny Edens and Shannon Coleman. ZEBLEY, HAROLD EUGENE BLUFF CITY -- Harold Eugene Zebley, 77, of Maplehurst, died Saturday, June 3, 2000, in Johnson City Medical Center. He was born in Uniontown, PA, a son of the late Harry and Anna Mae Roderick Zebley, and had lived in Mountain City for a number of years before moving to Bluff City about 30 years ago. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a Mason and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. He was retired from Sperry Univac and was a member of Elizabeth Chapel United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Ella Ree Jenkins Zebley; a daughter, Mrs. B.G. (Kathy) Fitzgerald of Gaithersburg, Md.; a son, James Carroll Zebley of Kelso, Wash.; a sister, Ruth Ann Putz of Markleysburg, PA; a brother, Arden H. Zebley of Fairchance, PA; two grandsons; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 1 p.m. in Elizabeth Chapel United Methodist Church by Oakley-Cook Funeral Home.
