AUTHUR, THELMA L. COX Thelma L. Cox Authur, 67, of 899 Weaver Branch Road, Bristol, TN, died Thursday, April 27, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was a lifelong resident of the Bluff City area, a daughter of Viola Strouth and the late Henry Chase Strouth. She was a housewife and a member of the Moose Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was also a member of First Baptist Church of Bluff City and the widow of her first husband, Russell Cox. Surviving, besides her mother, are her husband, Moye Van "Smokey" Authur; a daughter, Debbie Cox of Bristol TN; four sons, Larry Russell Cox of Watauga, TN, Gary Wayne Cox of Bristol VA and Jerry Lynn Cox and Michael Lee Cox, both of Bluff City; four brothers, Wayman Strouth, Dewayne Strouth, Earl Strouth and Jerry Strouth; a sister, June Chapman; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Burial will be in Cold Spring Cemetery. Mr. Baines, 73, of 813 VI Ranch Road, Bristol, TN, died Wednesday, April 19, 2000, at his home. He was a lifelong resident of Holston Valley Community, a son of the late Ely E. and Mary Offield Baines, and was a member of Cold Spring Presbyterian Church, where he served as elder, deacon and superintendent of Sunday School. He was a member of South Holston Ruritan Club, where he was elected Man of the Year in 1992. He served for 40 years as a scoutmaster in Troop 107 of Cold Spring Presbyterian Church. He was also a unit commissioner. Mr. Baines was a farmer and a retired truck driver from Bristol Products. Surviving are his wife, Doris Stophel Baines; a son, Dorwin Earl Baines of Bristol TN; two daughters, Mrs. Donald (Sharon) Wampler of Bristol TN and Mrs. Larry (Patricia) Forester of Huntsville, AL; two sisters, Clara Booher of Bristol TN and Vivian Hewitt of Bluff City; three brothers, Jim Baines Sr., Howard Robert "Bob" Baines and Bill Baines, all of Bristol TN; four grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. Among survivors is great-granddaughter Eliza Brooke Wampler. She was born in Duffield, VA, a daughter of the late Bailey and Myrtle Boardwine Barker. She had lived most of her life in Bristol. She was the widow of Ward W. Barker, a charter member of Willow Branch Baptist Church and later joined Avoca Christian Church. Surviving are a daughter, Shirley Baker of Bristol TN; a sister, Lolean G. Matthews of Richmond; a brother, Fred Barker of Palmara, VA; five grandchildren including Sandy Shockley and Mickey Baker of Bristol TN and Beth Losavia and Bridget Basso of Louisiana; eight great-grandchildren including Nathan, Dylan and Carly Shockley, Misty and Mindy Baker and Bailey Basso; and several nieces and nephews. BARKER, VERNON G. Vernon G. Barker, 68, of 205 Stevenwood Drive, Bristol, TN, died Tuesday, April 18, 2000, in Holston Valley Medical Center. He was born in St. Paul, VA, a son of the late William B. Sr. and Lorraine Larkey Barker. He had made his home in the Bristol area for the past 31 years. He was a retired employee of Unisys Corp. and a former employee of Bristol Compressors and Raytheon. He was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church, where he served as deacon. He was a member of St. Paul Masonic Lodge 343 and a U.S. Air Force veteran. Surviving are his wife, Nancy Freeman Barker; two sons, Bill Barker and Bob Barker, both of the home; a sister, Helen Rideout of Richmond; a brother, William A. He was born in Sullivan County, a son of the late Henry A. and Mary Flora Feathers Bullock, and had lived most of his life in Bristol. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and was retired from Overnite Transportation Co. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and a former member of the Bristol Virginia School Board. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Imogene McCracken Bullock; a daughter, Patty B. COLLIER, WILLIAM GLENN "NED" BLUFF CITY -- William Glenn "Ned" Collier, 72, of 392 Possum Creek Road, died Friday, April 28, 2000, in James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Mountain Home, TN. He was born and raised in Powell Valley in Wise County, VA, a son of the late Robert and Jennie Collier. He lived in Bristol and Bluff City for the past 32 years. Collier was a retired Marine gunnery sergeant, spending 20 years on active duty and 10 years in the reserves. He served two tours of duty in the Vietnam War and two tours of duty in the Korean War, and was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Rifle Marksman Badge and at least seven Good Conduct Medals. He retired from the military in 1978. Surviving are two sisters, Ruth Collier Whitaker of Bristol Tennessee and Bernice Collier Roberts of Wise; and several nieces and nephew. He received the Air Medal four times and the Distinguished Flying Cross. After leaving the military, he joined his parents in the family real estate business. During the time with his father's agency, they developed Virginia Heights, West Bristol Heights and King College Park area. He was instrumental in forming the Bristol Board of Realtors and was the only Realtor to be awarded the Bristol Board of Realtors Lifetime Achievement Award. He was past president of Bristol Board of Realtors and was voted Realtor of the Year in 1999. He attended Fellowship Chapel. Smith Sr. and Inez Miller Smith. He was a longtime resident of Bluff City before moving to Johnson City in 1996. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a retired employee from Raytheon Corp. in Bristol. He was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church in Johnson City. Prior to moving to Johnson City, Mr. Smith was a member of First Baptist Church in Bluff City, where he taught Sunday School and sang in the choir for many years. In the fall of 1987, he organized meal delivery to the homebound elderly in Bluff City and later recruited a coordinator for the Blountville area. In January 1990, he received the Volunteer Spotlight Award for his work with the Homebound Nutrition Program. He was the widower of his first wife, Betty Hemphill Smith. He was born in Bluff City, a son of the late Charles E. Worley and Lucy Denny Worley. He had lived all his life in the Bristol area. He attended Bluff City High School, Emory & Henry College and the University of Tennessee Law School. He was a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and the former owner of Bluff City Mills. Mr. Worley was former chairman of the Sullivan County Democratic Party and a former member of the Tennessee General Assembly and former treasurer of the State of Tennessee under Gov. Buford Ellington. He was a past president of the Board of Directors of the Country Club of Bristol and a member of the University of Tennessee Athletics Board. He had served as a director of Carter County Bank for 35 years and was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Surviving are his wife, Nancy Worley; two daughters, Mrs. David C. Surviving are four sisters, Blanche Smith, Dorothy Smith and Burcha Stophel, all of Bristol Tennessee, and Amanda Burchette of Abingdon; two brothers, William Richard Wright of Bristol Tennessee and Walter E. Wright of Dalesville, AL.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Howard Campbell and I.W. WYATT, MARY KATHERINE TALLMAN WHEELER Mary Katherine Tallman Wheeler Wyatt, 76, of 332 Old Stage Trail Road, Bristol, TN., died Saturday, April 8, 2000, at the home of her daughter. She was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area, a homemaker and a member of Rock Hill Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, Ray Wyatt; two daughters, Linda Rosenbalm of Bristol TN and Mary Campbell of Columbia, SC; three sons, Don Wheeler and Doug Wheeler, both of Bristol TN, and Phil Wheeler of Columbia, SC; a stepdaughter, Tammy Whitson of Bristol VA; a stepson, Louie Wyatt of Bristol VA; three sisters, Glenna Harvey of Bluff City, Irene Booher of Abingdon and Clara Kendrick of Bristol TN; two brothers, William "Bill" Tallman of Bristol TN and R.C. Tallman of Bluff City; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel.
