BARR, JOHN H. John H. Barr, 73, of 788 Old Airport Road, Bristol, VA, died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was a lifelong resident of Bristol VA, a former employee of Monroe Calculating Co. and retired from Sandvick Rock Tools. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II serving on the USS Block Island and was a member of Scenic Park Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Mary Ellen Fortner Barr; a daughter, Teresa Barr O'Bryan of Bristol VA; two sisters, Violet Roark and O'Dell Reynolds, both of Bristol TN; two brothers, Trinkle Barr of Charlotte, NC, and Robert Barr of Kingsport; a grandson; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 1 p.m. in Blevins Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Steve Tenpenny will officiate. BARR, MARTHA EDNA BRADENTON, FL -- Martha Edna Barr, 87, died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, in Manatee General Hospital in Bradenton. She was born in Washington County, Va., a daughter of the late Frank and Della Marion Barr, and lived in the Blountville area for many years. She was a teacher at Jessie P. Miller Elementary School when she retired, having taught for more than 30 years. She was a former teacher in the Sullivan County School System. She received her master's degree from East Tennessee State University, was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a graduate of American University of Women, and a member of the Manatee Retired Teachers Association. She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church of Bradenton. Surviving are a brother, Dr. Kyle Barr of Bristol TN; three nieces, Hazel Kimmel of Kingsport, Delores White of Surgoinsville, TN, and Margaret Ridley of Cookeville, TN; two nephews, James E. Barr of Tampa, FL, and the Rev. Daniel F. Barr of Cape May, NJ; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and several great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. He was born in Richlands, a son of Louie and Anna Barrett of Cedar Bluff, and lived in the Tri Cities area for the most of his life. He was an employee of Electrolux Corp. for the past 14 years and a member of Tri Cities Church of God in Piney Flats. Surviving, besides his parents, are his wife, Teresa Rogers Barrett; a daughter, Kimberly Celest B. Beal of Hampton, TN.; a son, Leslie Marson Barrett Jr. of the home; two sisters, Karen B. A eulogy will be given by John Eubanks. Burial will be in Russell Memorial Cemetery. Mrs. Becker, 96, of Bristol Virginia, died Saturday, Sept. 4, 1999. She was born in Cleveland, VA, and lived in Gaithersburg, MD, for several years before returning to Bristol Virginia in 1965. She was the widow of William Becker and a schoolteacher and businesswoman. She was a writer and poet, had published several books of poetry and contributed poems and news articles to newspapers in Virginia and Maryland. She was a member of the International Platform Association, The Wyoming Writers Association and the Appalachian Poets and Writers. She was a member of the Gaithersburg Methodist Church and attended State Street Methodist Church after moving to Bristol. Surviving are a stepson, William Becker Jr. of California; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Becker was invited to read some of her poetry in Viking Hall, churches, schools and civic clubs in the Bristol area. Pallbearers will be nephews. BLAIR, EDITH DAISY TERRY Edith Daisy Terry Blair, 89, of 1404 Norway St., Bristol, VA, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 1999, at her home. She was born in Bristol Virginia and lived in Washington, DC, for 23 years before returning to Bristol. She was the widow of George Roosevelt Blair. She was a 50-years-plus member of Border City Chapter 162, Order of the Eastern Star in Bristol Tennessee, and a member of North Bristol Baptist Church. Surviving are three daughters, Shirley Gatterdam of Columbus, OH, Katherine Staurakas of Hyattsville, MD, and Margaret Hurley of Mechanicsville, MD; four sons, Robert L. "Bob" Blair and Lynn E. Blair, both of Bristol TN, Marvin S. Blair of Gainesville, VA, and George T. Blair of New Market, MD; a sister, Coleen Maples of Florida; 26 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was born in and lived most of his life in Bristol and retired from Morrison Moulded Fiberglass. He was the widower of Mary Ann Bentley Canter and a member of First Assembly of God in Bristol Virginia. CELIA, ALFRED H. Alfred H. Celia, 89, of 1202 Tremont Ave., Bristol, TN, died Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1999, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born in New Haven, CT, a son of the late Lucia Setola Celia and Gaetano Celia, and had lived in Bristol since 1930. He was a graduate of King College and owner of Big Al's Package Store. He was a former insurance adjuster and former owner of Russo's Tailor Shop. He was a life member of Bristol Elks Lodge 232 for 41 years and served as exalted ruler in 1969-70. He served as district deputy grand exalted ruler in 1973-74 and as state president of the Tennessee Elks Association in 1979-80. He was past president of the Fraternal Veterans Council of Bristol and a member of the Moose Lodge. He was of the Catholic faith. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Blake (Ann C.) Barnes of Bristol TN; a granddaughter, Deborah B. Dishman of Bristol VA; a grandson, Stephen B. Barnes IV of Charlotte, NC; three great-grandchildren; and two nieces. She was a daughter of Yvone Wilson of Abingdon and the late Charles Wilson. She was a graduate of Johnston Memorial School of Nursing in Abingdon, and had served as a Registered Nurse at Bristol Regional Medical Center for over 41 years. She was serving as a nurse manager at the time of her retirement in January 1999. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the State of Franklin Track Club and the YMCA. HAYS, GEORGE C. Jr. KINGSPORT -- George C. "Jocko" Hays Jr., 80, of 4308 Beechcliff Drive, died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 1999, in Holston Valley Medical Center. He was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County and a son of the late George C. Hays Sr. and Lona Bond Hays. He was the widower of Kathryn Bondurant Hays. He was a basketball center for Blountville High School and Milligan College and a TSSAA official for many years, officiating games in the Eastman Recreation Club League. He was a former member of the Blountville Ruritan Club, where he managed the Tigers, a Little League baseball team. He coached Kingsport City Pee Wee Basketball League team from 1967-70. Mr. Hays was a retired employee of Tennessee Eastman, where he worked in the C. E. Division for over 40 years in the shipping department. He was a member of Blountville United Methodist Church, where he served as a Sunday school teacher. Most recently, he was a member of Mayfair United Methodist Church in Kingsport. Surviving are two sons, Alan Hays of New Carrollton, MD, and George C. Hays III of Kingsport; two grandsons, Ryan Hays and Sean Hays; and several nieces and nephews. HICKS, JOE H. DR. Dr. Joe H. Hicks, 78, of Bristol died Friday, Sept. 3, 1999, in Holston Valley Medical Center. He was a son of Robert James and Sarah Elizabeth Harkleroad Hicks. He attended Fairmount Elementary, Bristol Tennessee High School, King College, Emory and Henry College, Bob Jones College and Drake University. He was a corporal in the U.S. Army serving onboard the "H.M.S." Highland Princess in the Mediterranean. He attended and graduated from the University of Tennessee at Memphis in 1951 with a degree in dental surgery. He was a member of the ADA, Psi Omega Fraterity and a former member of the B.P.O.E. 232, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion and VFW. He was the widower of Dorothea Elaine Seastrunk of Beaumont, Texas, and a member of Stonebrook Community Church of God of Kingsport. Surivivng are three sons, Joseph H. Hicks II, pastor William C. Hicks and Robert Carey Hicks, all of Bristol Tennessee; a daughter, Mercedes S. Martinez of Atlanta; two grandchildren; and a niece. For more than 50 years, he helped establish a number of mission ministries throughout the country to help those in need.
