ALFORD, WALTER CECIL Walter Cecil Alford, 83, of 1221 Sugar Hollow Drive, Bristol, Tenn., died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001, in Wellmont Hospice House. He was a native of Sullivan County and a son of the late James and Mary Blevins Alford. He had a great love for the outdoors, hunting, fishing and working with his hands. He was proprietor of Alford Builders, a farmer and, during World War II, worked in Glen L. Martin Aricraft factory. Survivors include his wife, Louise Boughers Alford; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Jerry Morrell of Kingsport, Charlotte and Billy Joe James and Janet and Carl Rhymer, all of Bristol, Tenn., and Devone and Randy Campbell of Bristol, Va.; son and daughter-in-law, James Eugene and Joyce Alford of Bristol, Tenn.; heart-recipient daughter, Sharon Menier of Cuyahaga Fall, Okla., special nephew, Dwight Boyd of Bristol, Tenn., brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Etta Alford of Bristol, Tenn.; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter and son-in-law, Reba and Dennis Edmondson; sister, Beulah Boyd; and brothers, Clifton Alford, Lester Alford, Oscar Alford and Worley Alford. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Ministers Ken Kerner, William Brown and Jim Crews officiating. Burial will follow in Shipley Cemetery. ALLEN, DOROTHY SUE Dorothy Sue Allen, 92, a former resident of Bristol, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, in Kennesaw, Ga. She was a native of Bristol, Va., daughter of the late John Preston and Anna Cantrell Vernon. While in Bristol, she attended Euclid Avenue Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Kelly B. Keesling and Floyd P. Allen. Survivors include daughters, Nancy K. Brickey, Waynesville, NC, Patsy K. Carrier, Kennesaw, and Kitty K. ARRANTS, ROBBIE THOMAS BLUFF CITY -- Robbie Thomas Arrants died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, in Montgomery County Nursing Home in Clarksville, Tenn. She was a lifelong resident of Bluff City and the daughter of the late Reed H. Thomas Sr. and Ressie Darr Bryant Thomas. She was a retired employee of Holston Ordinance in Kingsport. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henderson B. Arrants. She is survived by her daughter, Toni Spears Bryan and her husband, Dr. Eugene Bryan of Clarksville, Tenn.; two granddaughters, Tracy Bryan White and her husband Dr. Steve White, of Clarksville and Stephanie Bryan Huber and her husband Craig Huber, of Marina Del Rey, Calif.; two great-grandsons, Bryson and Brady White, both of Clarksville; two nieces, Candy Phelps of Bluff City and Mona Beverly of Knoxville; one nephew, Reed Walter Rutherford of Bluff City; and two sisters-in-law, Laura J. BAKER, EUNICE B. Eunice B. Baker, 70, died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, after suffering a heart attack. She was born on Feb. 27, 1931, in Sullivan County, where she lived her entire life. Ms. Baker devoted her time to caregiving and homemaking. She was a member of Gardners Chapel Primitive Baptist Church and attended Chestnut Flats Primitive Baptist Church. Ms. Baker was the daughter of the late Jake K. Baker. Surviving are her mother, Roena B. Baker; other survivors include, Sylvia and Wayne Gibson of Blountville, Christopher Wayne Gibson of Cookeville, Ada Lou Baker of the home, Virgie Ann and Dan Cross of Rural Retreat, Va., Minola and Phillip Price of Kingsport, Ralph and Kay Baker of Kingsport, Elder Lewis and Rosa Baker of Blountville; eight nieces and nephews; and eight great-nieces and great-nephews. BALTHIS, WILLIAM H. "BILL" RICHMOND, Ind. -- William H. "Bill" Balthis, 90, of 4100 S. A St., died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at Rose Gate Village. He was born in Bristol, Va., to John C. and Dona Felty Balthis and had lived most of his life in Richmond. He worked 15 years as a machine operator at International Harvester and was owner of Balthis Trucking Co. for 40 years. He attended Central Christian Church. Surviving are his wife, Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Woods Balthis; three daughters, Donna Church of Sugarland, Texas, Linda Jo Page of Centerville, Ind., and Marilyn Caldwell of Springboro, Ohio; two sons, Bill W. Balthis of Crystal River, Fla., and William Junior Balthis of Celina, Ohio; 24 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and nieces and nephews. BARNES, HAZEL SCOTT Hazel Scott Barnes, 92, of 2314 Anderson St., Bristol, Tenn., died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was a lifelong resident of Bristol and was the daughter of the late Edward Y. and Belle Bushong Scott. She was preceded in death by her husband, James G. Barnes Sr.; and a son, James G. Barnes Jr. She was a member of Central Presbyterian Church. Survivors include one son, Charles E. Barnes and wife, Barbara, of Bristol, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Michael Barnes, Johnny Barnes, Patricia Sanders and Rebecca Miller; four great-grandchildren, Tasha Barnes, Nikita Miller, Dylan Barnes and Courtney Barnes; and a special neighbor, Oakley Buckles. BAXTER, DON JAMES KNOXVILLE -- Don James Baxter, 71, of 1026 Shadowbrook Drive died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, in NHC Nursing Home, Knoxville. He was a retired engineer with Raytheon Corp. in Bristol. He was a member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church, Bristol Masonic Lodge and Avoca Volunteer Fire Department of Bristol, Tenn. BOOHER, ELSIE M. COLE Elsie M. Cole Booher, 70, of 283 Leonard Road, Bristol, Tenn., died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, at her residence. She was born April 8, 1931, the daughter of the late Andy and Margaret Sutherland Cole. She was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area and was a homemaker and a member of State Street Church of Christ. She was the widow of James Douglas Booher. Survivors include: sons, Samuel A. Cole of Bristol Virginia, and James D. BOOHER, ROBERT A. Robert A. Booher, 67, of 63 Fuller St., Bristol, Va., died on Nov. 8, 2001, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born on May 7, 1934, the son of the late Burley and Nellie May Rush Booher. He was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area and had worked at Valleydale for 23 years and most recently at Bristol Compressors for three years. He attended Old Airport Road Baptist Church. Survivors include wife, Alice Bowery Booher; daughter, Alice Leonard; son, Jeff A. Booher; brother, Jackie Booher; grandchildren, Jamie Maiden, Jessica Leonard and Chad Culbertson; step-grandson, Jason Shaffer; and great-granddaughter, Trinity Maiden. She was born in Lee, NH, Feb. 4, 1925, a daughter of the late George N. and Marvel P. Demerritt, and had made her home in the Blountville and Bristol area most of her life. She was of the Baptist faith and a hair dresser at Katies Beauty Shoppe. Survivors include her children and spouses, Cheryl and Curtis Harr, Rhonda and Bill Bader, Stephen Bourne, Kevin Bourne, Phil and Lisa Bourne and Lori Rosenbalm; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister, Alice Lemesiries; and two brothers, Lennie Denerritt and George Varney. BOUTON, CHARLES D. Charles D. Bouton, 64, 109 Penrod Rd., Bristol, Tenn., went to be with the Lord Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home, Tenn. Mr. Bouton was born May 8, 1937, in Elizabethton, Tenn., a son of the late Irvin and Naomi Riddle Bouton, and had made his home in the Bristol area for the past several years. He was a retired employee of Carter County Annex and Northeast Correctional Center and was a former cook at several country clubs. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean conflict. Survivors include his wife, Hazel P. Bouton; children, Robert D. Bouton, Charles Allen Bouton, Loretta I. Bouton, William A. BRADSHAW, JOHN H. BLOUNTVILLE -- Mr. John H. Bradshaw Jr. died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, in Greystone Health Care Center in Blountville. He was formerly of Johnson City. Mr. Bradshaw was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. John H. Bradshaw Sr. and Oma Irene Bradshaw. BULLOCK, JAMES B. "JIM"PINEY FLATS -- James B. "Jim" Bullock, 67, 773 Summer Sound Rd., died Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2001, at Johnson City Medical Center. Jim was born Oct. 30, 1934, a son of James B. Sr. and Mattie Potts Bullock, and had made his home in the Bristol area all of his life. He was the owner and operator of Bullock Electric, a member of the American Legion Post 145 and 40 and 8, a member of Central Holston Christian Church and a U.S. Navy veteran. BURKE, WILLIE RAY KINGSPORT -- Willie Ray Burke, 68, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2001, at his residence after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Russell County, Va., and moved to Kingsport at an early age. He was a member of the Kingsport Masonic Lodge 688, a member of Horse Creek Freewill Baptist Church and attended various churches. He retired from Eastman Chemical in 1993 after over 35 years of service. CANNON, DILLARD "BILL" BLOUNTVILLE -- Dillard "Bill" Cannon Jr., 70, of 210 Spring St., D-2, died Tuesday night at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center following a short Illness. Mr. Cannon was a native of Middlesboro, Ky., and the son of the late Dillard Sr. and F. Ethel Cannon. He was a retired Army master sergeant. FEDEROW, PAUL R. Paul R. Federow, 78, of Bristol, Tenn., died Wednesday, Nov., 7, 2001, at his residence. Mr. Federow was a native of Rome, NY, and had moved to Bristol in 1967. He was born in Clintwood, Va., a son of the late Congressman John W. Flannagan Jr. and Frances Pruner Flannagan, and had lived most of his life in Bristol. He was a graduate of the Bristol Virginia School System, received a B. A. degree from King College, completed graduate studies at American University in Washington, DC, and earned his J. D. degree from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He began the practice of law in 1947 in partnership with his father in Bristol, Va., and was a founding partner in 1967 in Woodward, Miles and Flannagan, P.C. He specialized in litigation and arbitration of labor disputes. He was a member of Central Presbyterian Church, the Bristol Virginia Bar Association, the Virginia State Bar, American Bar Association, American College of Trial Lawyers, International Association of Insurance Counsel, Who's Who in Society, Who's Who in American Law, International Who's Who of Contemporary Achievement and Two Thousand Men of Distinction. HODGE, HAROLD BOYD "HOPPY" GREENVILLE, SC -- Harold Boyd "Hoppy" Hodge, 63, of 37 N. Estate Drive died Friday, Nov. 9, 2001, at Greenville Memorial Hospital. Born in Kingsport Aug. 13, 1938, he was a son of Hazel Blevins Hodge of Abingdon and the late Charles W. Hodge Sr. Having spent the majority of his first 18 years of life as a patient at Greenville's Shriners Hospital, his lifelong dream was to become a Shriner and help other children who were "differently abled." Through much perseverance, determination and the loving support of his older brother and Shriner, Les Hodge, Hoppy became a 32nd-degree Scottish Rite Mason, a York Rite Mason and ultimately a member of Hejaz Shrine Temple. As a Shriner, Hoppy received many plaques and citations honoring his outstanding service on behalf of the crippled and burned child. He served two terms as captain of the wheelchair unit, treasurer of the scooter unit, honorary member of the Hejaz Motor Corp and earned Diamond status in his Shriner's Crown of Honor. Retired from the City of Greenville with more than 25 years of service, Hoppy was a dispatcher for both the city police department and the county sheriff's office. Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his brother and sister-in-law, Les and Dianne Hodge of Greenville; two nephews, Steven W. Hodge of California and Alan J. Hodge of Greenville; and a niece, Kimberly Hodge Wood and family of Tigerville, SC He was predeceased by his father, and also a brother, Charles W. LETT, PEGGY BARKER Peggy Barker Lett, 66, of 1941 Bay St., Bristol, Tenn., died Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, in Wellmont Hospice House. Born to the late William and Ada Hale Barker, she was a lifelong resident of Bristol. She was a member of the Auxiliary of VFW Patton-Crosswhite Post 6975, and was of the Baptist faith. Her husband, James Lett, preceded her in death along with two brothers, James and Fred Barker. He was a member and past master of the Liberty Hall Lodge 104 AF & AM in Damascus and also a member of the Royal Arch Chapter, E.H. Gill No. 50 in Bristol, Va. He was a devoted member and deacon of the Walnut Grove Church of the Brethren in Taylors Valley. In addition to his faithful service to his local church, he also served in various positions on the district level. A native of Meadowview, she had lived in the Bristol area most of her life. She was the daughter of the late Paul and Mimia Humphrey Hash. She was a homemaker and of the Pentecostal Holiness faith. MOBLEY, PHYLLIS ANNE BLUFF CITY -- Phyllis Anne Mobley, 62, of 232 Eastwood Drive, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, in Johnson City Medical Center. Mrs. Mobley was born in Bristol, Tenn., and was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County. She was a graduate of Bristol Tennessee High School and was the only daughter of the late Carl A. and Pauline Cole O'Dell, Sr. She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Thomas E. Mobley; two brothers, Donald H. Odell; and Carl A. O'Dell, Jr. and was a member of First Baptist Church, Bristol, Va., and was an active member of the Beta Sunday School Class. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Jeff and Lorrie (Mobley) Gill of Flowery Branch, Ga., John and Sherri (Mobley) Long of Bristol, Tenn.; one son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Alyssa Mobley of Garland, Texas; two brothers, Robert L. MOODY, JAMES W. KINGSPORT -- James W. Moody Sr., 82, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001, after an automobile accident. He was born in Kingsport and lived most of his life in Cooks Valley. He was a member of Kingsport Methodist Church and was a retired carpenter by trade. James was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Opal Lewis Moody; brothers, Clifton, Clay and Farris Moody; sister, Hazel Moody; parents, Ed and Ollie Dillow Moody; and a great-granddaughter, Summer Quillen. He is survived by brothers, Ray Moody Sr., Bill Moody and J.B. Moody; and sisters, Louise Williams and Margie Jennings. Mr. Moody is also survived by his six children, James W. Moody Jr., Shirley Krell, E.G. Moody and wife Mary Frances, Linda Christian and husband Phillip, Lewis Moody and wife Nancy and T. Glen Moody and wife Deb, all of the Kingsport and Bristol areas. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, T. MOORE, JULIAN GEORGE "BUD" ERWIN, Tenn. -- Julian George "Bud" Moore, 77, died Nov. 11, 2001, at his residence. He was a native of Louisville, Ky., but had lived in Erwin his entire life. He was the son of the late Rufus Slaughter and Julia Horne Moore. He was a member of Presbyterian Church of Erwin. He was a member of Erwin Civitan, longtime member of Johnson City Country Club, Elks Lodge of Erwin 1985, Tennessee Golf Association, United States Golf Association, American Dental Society, Tennessee State Dental Society and served in the U.S. Navy Pacific Theater during World War II 1943-45. He received a BS degree from ETSU, was a 1954 graduate of UT of Memphis, where he received his DDS.
