ASHLEY, ARTHUR C. Arthur C. "Lightning" Ashley, 83, of Bristol, Tenn., died Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, in the Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area, son of the late Clarence S. Ashley Sr. and Hattie Lowe Ashley. He was a retired employee with the Bristol Virginia Department of Highways. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving with Company K.121 Infantry Division during World War II where he fought at Normandy, Northern France and Rhineland. He received wounds in France in July, 1944. He received numerous medals including the Purple Heart, the Victory Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the American Defense Ribbon, the EAME Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Stars, the American Theater Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two sisters, Myrtle Eva Lunsford and Josephine Lunsford; a brother, Albert J. Ashley; grandparents, Alfred Lowe and Fanny Arrowood and James Ashley and Hassie McClain. Survivors include a brother, Clarence S. Ashley Jr., Bristol, Tenn.; two sisters, Margaret J. Collin, Bristol, Tenn., and Mary L. Mitchell, Bristol, Tenn.; niece, Mrs. Ernest (Peggy) Stout of the home; other nieces and nephews; and a special dog friend, Biscuit. Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Stan Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in East Hill Cemetery. BARGER, CARRIE FLEENOR BLOUNTVILLE -- Carrie Fleenor Barger, 92, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, in Bristol Nursing Home. She was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County, Tenn., and a daughter of the late Sidney W. and Pearl Murray Fleenor. She was the widow of Jake Barger. Survivors include one sister, Alma Ruth Weatherly of Farmland, Ind.; three brothers, Eugene Fleenor and Herbert Fleenor, both of Blountville, and Earl Fleenor of Bristol, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Wilma Clark. The funeral service will be conducted at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Akard Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Arnold officiating. The committal service and interment will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Gunnings Cemetery. Pallbearers will be John Fleenor, Bobby Fleenor, Bill Fleenor, Phillip Roller, Paige Adams and H.J. Anderson. Brittney Breann Bentley, 6, of 1010 Denton Valley Road, Bristol, Tenn., died on Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at her residence. She was born in Richlands, Va., the daughter of Summer Brewer Ouellette, and attended pre-school at Gunnings Elementary School. She had lived in Bristol for two years after moving from Castlewood, Va. BOLING, JAMES E. "JAYU" BUTLER, Tenn. -- James E. (Jay) Boling, 80, 705 Scott St., died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001, in the Pine Ridge Care Center. A native of Old Butler, he was a son of the late James Landon and Ida Mahaffey Boling. He had lived a number of years in Ohio before returning to Butler. He was retired from General Motors, Dayton, Ohio, having worked there for 38 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II, having served in Germany, France and Belgium. Mr. Boling was a member and trustee of Butler Baptist Church. He was a member of Roan Creek Masonic Lodge 679. He was a member of the National Rifle Association. He was preceded in death by two wives, Thelma Millsaps Boling and Paula Heath Boling; two sisters, Edith Boling Slemp Abel and Margaret Boling Banes Bush; and by one brother, D.W. Boling. Survivors include his wife, Vernell Courtner Cable Boling; three daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Tim Dunlevy and Betty and Lowell Vaughn, all of Dayton, and Barbara and Roger Bunn, Smithville, Va.; one sister, Mary Jonas, Dayton; one brother, Edwin Boling, Dayton; two granddaughters; two grandsons; two step-granddaughters; one step-grandson; three great-granddaughters; two great-grandsons; two step-great-granddaughters; and three step-great-grandsons. BOLING, OPAL L. BLUFF CITY -- Opal L. Boling, 89, formerly of Timber Ridge Road, died Monday, Oct. 15, 2001, at Ivy Hall Nursing Home in Elizabethton, Tenn. A native of Bluff City, she was a daughter of the late Will and Mae Miller Harmon. Mrs. Boling was a member of Brookside Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by one brother, Lynn Harmon; and one granddaughter. Survivors include her husband, R. Parks Boling of Elizabethton; five sons, Wilbor Cleatis Boling and Lester G. Boling, both of Piney Flats, Aaron Lynn Boling of Bluff City, Forrest Wayne Boling of Elizabethton and Robert Allen Boling of Salem, Va.; two sisters, Willeta Miracle and Arzella Malone, both of Bluff City; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. BOOTH, DORIS LOUISE NEAL Doris Louise Neal Booth, 77, 107 Redwood Rd., Bristol, Tenn., died Monday, Oct. 8th, at 4 p.m. at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was a native of Bristol, Tenn., and had lived in Bristol all her life. She was the daughter of the late Roy Lee and Helen Willie Stewart Neal. She was of Episcopalian faith. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma for 35 years and served as president from 1980-82. She was a member of the Bristol Virginia Education Association and Bristol Historical Society. She taught for 37 years in the Bristol Virginia Public Schools. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Lee Neal. Survivors: spouse, John Price Booth; daughter, Pamela Booth Teaster (Gerald Wilburn Teaster); grandson, Evan Price Teaster; and over 60 nieces and nephews. BOUGHERS, TIMOTHY LLOYD GREENEVILLE, Tenn. -- Timothy Lloyd Boughers, 46, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2001, from injuries received in a car accident. Tim was chosen for "Who's Who in American High Schools" in 1972. He was musically talented and sang in the elite singing group, "The Patriotic Singers." He was also a very accomplished guitarist. A native of Sullivan County, he moved to Greeneville in 1978 where he worked for several years at the Greene Valley Development Center. He was a successful salesman at Don Smith Ford/Lincoln/Mercury. Tim was an avid tennis player and a NASCAR fan. He attended Trinity United Methodist Church where he was a fixture in the nursery when his daughter was an infant and toddler. He was a member of Greeneville Moose Lodge 692, where he served as governor in 1997-98, and a member of the Men's Ritual Team which received the honor of third place team at international competition held in Las Vegas, Nev., in July. Tim was awarded second place, individual award as orator; he was a member of the Moose Legion, winning third place for his individual part at the convention held last November in Niagara Falls. Survivors include his wife, Karen Boughers and beloved daughter, Hannah Grace Boughers of Greeneville; his parents, Bobby L. and Minnie Boughers of Bristol, Tenn.; a sister, Peggy Boughers of Raleigh, NC; mother-in-law, Norma Kelly, sister-in-law, Rhonda Routh and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Brian and Karri Kelly, all of Bluff City, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jerry and Jennifer Langley of Piney Flats, Tenn.; four nephews; one niece; and special friends, Herb Rupert of Parrotsville and Gary Bishop of Greeneville. The family wishes to acknowledge the special help received from Greeneville police officer, Steve Lowe, for his assistance on the night of the accident. CARRICO, CAROLYN KINGSPORT -- Carolyn Carico, 64, of 1013 Catawaba St., went to be with the Lord Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, at Holston Valley Medical Center after a period of declining health. Carolyn was born May 15, 1937, in Washington County, Va., a daughter of the late Hobart and Viola Widener. She was a graduate of Dobbins Bennett High School, a medical assistant and former office manager for Drs. Locke Carter, David Franzus, Ridgeway, Bales and Robert Jernigan for many years. She was a member of North Kingsport Church of God where she was very active. She taught Sunday School and was president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the church and a former pianist for the church. She is survived by her husband of 33 years, Ray Carico of the home; two sisters, Eileen Collins of Kingsport and Wanda McCormick of Mississippi; a brother, Vernon Widener of Kingsport; a special friend, Retha Collins; and a host of nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be 5-8 p.m. Thursday at the North Kingsport Church of God. COLE, CLAUDE BASCOM Mr. Claude Bascom Cole, 84, died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. Born in Washington County, he was a son of the late Wyatt Cole and Susan Legg Cole. Mr. Cole was preceded in death by a grandson, Greg Byington; and two brothers, Lynn Cole and Charles Cole. Mr. Cole was a long-time member of the Shakesville Church of Christ where he had served as an elder and Sunday School teacher for many years. He was a retired farmer and well-known throughout Washington County. He was a former resident of the Jonesboro Road Community before making his home with his son for the past several months. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Ralph and Treicia Byington of Abingdon; grandchildren Adam Byington and Jessica Byington; a brother, Bill Cole of Bristol, Va.; two sisters, Mrs. Irene Latham of Bristol, Va., and Mrs. Dorothy Richard of Bristol, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews. DILLARD, KENNETH CHARLES SPANAWAY, Wash. -- Kenneth Charles Dillard, 70, died Sept. 20, 2001, at St. Joseph Hospital in Tacoma, Wash. He was a native of the Bristol area and a son of James Dillard of Bristol, Va., and the late Lena Dillard. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force after 22 years, spent eight years as an assistant golf pro and was owner/operator of a janitorial service for 18 years. EVERROAD, LESLIE B. JOHNSON CITY -- Leslie B. Everroad, 82, of Christian Lane, Tower Apartments, went to be with the Lord, Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, after a period of declining health. Leslie was born Oct. 4, 1919, in Columbus, Ind., a son of the late Grifa and Margaret Quinn Everroad. He was retired from Cummins Engineering Company as supervisor after 42 years of service. He was a member of First Christian Church of Columbus, where he served as deacon and elder. He attended worship service at First Christian Church in Johnson City and Sunday School at Central Baptist Church in Johnson City. He was past president of the Kiwanis Club in Indiana and a 32nd degree Mason. He received a plaque for his service of 100 hours for ground maintenance at the Appalachian Christian Village. In addition to his parents, his first wife, Theresa Shannon Everroad, who passed away Aug. 6, 1997, 10 brothers, and two sisters preceded Leslie in death. She was born and educated in Knoxville and had lived most of her life in Blountville. She was the daughter of the late James and Mabel Phillips Woods. She was the widow of her first husband, A. Kyle Smith, who died in 1958, and her second husband, James M. Feathers, who died in 1989. She was also preceded in death by one sister; and two brothers. Mrs. Feathers was employed by Dr. Joe Mitchell for 24 years and Dr. NJ Chew for 21/2 years. She was the third oldest member of First Baptist Church in Blountville, where she was a charter member of the WMU and a member of Current Missions. Mrs. Feathers was a very family-oriented person with a loving heart and a very strong spirit. She was a very caring and loving mother and grandmother and a friend to all. She was the widow of Joe Fleenor Jr. Ann was a member of Hull's Chapel United Methodist Church where she was treasurer and a member of the United Methodist Women. She was an active bowler with the Housewife Bowling League at Belmont Bowling Lanes and president of the FHC (Fairview Homemakers Club). She was a retired employee of Burlington Mills prep department after 20 years of service and was a former employee of North Electric Co. In addition to her parents and husband, her brother, Ivan Glover, preceded her in death. Ann was a dedicated friend, loving sister, aunt, godmother and honorary grandmother. Anne will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. HILL, ERNEST D. Jr. Ernest D. Hill Jr., 69, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, at Bristol Nursing Home. He was born in Asheville, NC, a son of Opal Lytle Hill Jones of Asheville and the late Ernest D. JONES, ROSEMARY J. Rosemary J. Jones, 76, of Bristol, Tenn., died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, at Johnson City Medical Center. Mrs. Jones was born on July 21, 1925, in Bristol, Tenn., the daughter of the late James M. and Iva Mauk Jones. She graduated from Tennessee High School and Sullins College, and completed her B. S. degree from Radford University. An accomplished pianist and organist, Mrs. Jones served as organist in many United Methodist churches, beginning as pianist at the age of 12 in her home church, Virginia Avenue United Methodist Church in Bristol, Tenn. She married her minister, Dr. Arthur H. Jones Jr., in 1945 and spent 40 years assisting him with his ministry throughout the Holston Conference and raising their three children. In addition to numerous church activities, Mrs. Jones was an active member of the American Guild of Organists and the Bluff City Music Club, holding numerous offices in both organizations. The widow of Dr. Arthur Jones, Mrs. Jones is survived by three children: a daughter, Heda J. Quillin and her husband Charles of Abingdon; two sons, A. Heath Jones and his wife Julie of Nashville and R. KING, J. STANTON WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- Dr. J. Stanton King, of 2370 Lyndhurst Ave., died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, at home. He was born in Sullivan County, Tenn., to J. Stanton King Sr. and Annie Lowry King. Dr. King was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force, serving during World War II. He attended Berea College and Rockerfeller University, graduating from the University of Chicago, and earned his Ph. D at the University of Tennessee in Memphis. He was control chemist with S. E. Massengill Co. He was associated with Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University and at his retirement was executive editor of the American Association of Clinical Chemistry Journal. He was a member of the National Academy of Science, Who's Who in U.S. Writers, Editors and Poets, and Council of Biology Editors. During his career, Dr. King contributed to more than 100 publications and received such honors as the American Association for Clinical Chemistry Award for outstanding contributions to Clinical Chemistry in a Special Area, the Miriam Reiner Award, the Bernard Gerulat Award and the Career Development Award. Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Betty Boyd King; a daughter, Melissa Stanton Gammon of Norfolk, Va.; and a son, Robert Stanton King of Austinville, Va. A private memorial service will be held. LUCKENBACH, GLADYS N. BLUFF CITY -- Gladys N. Luckenbach, 86, passed away at home on Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001. She was born April 27, 1915, in East Orange, NJ, as Gladys Naomi Krug, daughter of Theophilus and Louise Krug. She was the former wife of Bernard Cramer, who preceded her in death in 1979. She was a 1935 graduate of New Jersey State Normal School of Newark, NJ, and held a master's degree in education from Montclair College, Montclair, NJ She was a reading specialist in the New Jersey school system for nearly 40 years, having retired from her profession in Bloomfield, NJ, in 1981. She moved to the Bristol area in 1982 to be near her only son, Bill Cramer, who was a well-known radio personality in the Tri-Cities and who died in 1999. Mrs. Luckenbach married her current husband, Earl C. Luckenbach at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Bristol, Va., on April 9, 1994. She moved to Manchester, NH, with him at that time until he retired in December of 1996. They returned to her home in Bluff City in January 1997. Gladys was an avid bowler before she became disabled from a hip fracture. She maintained a love of crafts and had a special interest in stained glass, a subject that she taught to others here in Bristol. Her early joy in life was music and she played violin since her college days. She was a member of several orchestra and symphony concerts during her teaching years in New Jersey. She was a parishioner of St. Anne's Catholic Church, Bristol, Va. She is survived by her husband, Earl Luckenbach; her only grandson, Ben Cramer and his wife Jodie of Johnson City; and her cousin, Rev. McPEAK, JOHN DAVID Sr. Mr. John David McPeak Sr., 326 Locust Hill Lane, Bristol, Tenn., died Oct. 13, 2001, in Bristol Wellmont Hospice House. He was a native of and lifelong resident of the Tri-Cities area and a retired employee of the Bristol Virginia Utilities Board. One of his most beloved activities was being outdoors and next to his Creator. He was also an avid hiker and naturalist. He was an Eagle Scout and a former troop leader of Troop 109 of Bristol, Tenn. He traveled extensively to many countries and to most of the 50 states. He had a love for trains, bluegrass music and UT football. Mr. McPeak attended Rockhold United Methodist Church, where he had been a Sunday School teacher. He was formerly a member of Tennessee Avenue Baptist Church and Fellowship Chapel. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Humphreys McPeak; two daughters, Joy L. Garland, Johnson City, Tenn., Joanna M. McPeak, Dallas, Texas; two sons, Lt. Col. John David McPeak Jr., St. Louis, Mo., and Greg S. McPeak, Oak Ridge, Tenn.; two brothers, Michael McPeak and Phillip McPeak, both of Johnson City and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Bobbie Crowe; and one brother, Samuel McPeak. Funeral services will be conducted 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, at Akard Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. prior to the funeral service. Rev. Eugene Deaton will officiate. Graveside services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sunrise Cemetery, Bluff City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wellmont Hospice House, 280 Steele's Rd., Bristol, TN 37620. MILLER, KENNETH LEE Sr. Committal services for Kenneth Lee Miller Sr. will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Mountain View Mausoleum. MILLER, KENNETH LEE Sr. Kenneth Lee Miller Sr., 73, of Bristol, Tenn., went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, at Bristol Regional Medical Center after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was a retired machinist with Raytheon and Sperry and attended Fellowship Chapel. Survivors include wife of 51 years, Maudie Miller; son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth Lee Jr. and Kim Miller of Mt. Carmel, Tenn.; daughter and son-in-law, Terry Lee and Bob Snyder of Lakeland, Fla., and Nancy Reynolds of Bristol, Tenn.; brothers, A.R. Gus Miller of Kingsport and Roy A. Miller of Abingdon; grandchildren, Laura Beth Chaney, Brandon Scott Miller, Kimberly Ann Widner and Cody Lee Jones; step-grandchildren, Abbey Jones and Katie Jones; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday at 8 p.m. in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Scott Price and Rev. Lester MacKinnon officiating. MINOR, JOYCE B. BLOUNTVILLE -- Joyce B. Minor, 84, of 108 Hawley Road, Blountville, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001. Mrs. Minor was born Sept. 23, 1917, in Castlewood, a daughter of the late Oscar and Lizzie Couch Bickley and the widow of App Minor. Joyce was a member of Blountville Presbyterian Church. In addition to her husband and parents, her brothers Joe, Guy, Pude and Jack Bickley preceded her in death. Survivors include her son, Daniel Bickley Minor of Blountville; her grandchildren, Daniel Bickley Minor Jr. of Teluride, Colo., David Tyler Minor of San Diego and Dustin Fredrick Minor of Duluth, Ga.; a great grandson, Zachary Minor of Duluth; two sisters, Carolyn Farrier of New Port, Va., and Nell Lonon of St. Paul, Va.; and a niece, Mary Clark of Bristol, Tenn. Calling hours will be 6-8 p.m. today at East Lawn Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Blountville Presbyterian Church with the Rev. John Everett officiating. MINOR, TROY H. Troy H. Minor, 76, of Cambridge House, died on Monday, Oct. 22, 2001. He was born Aug. 31, 1925, the son of the late Mack and Myrtle Robinette Minor. He was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area and retired from Parks Belk. He was a member of Lime Hill Baptist Church and had been scout master for Troop 318 of the Boy Scouts of America. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in World War II. Survivors include: daughter and son-in-law, Nita and Ron McCready of Bristol, Tenn.; son and daughter-in-law, Troy W. and Judy Minor of Bristol, Va.; brothers, Donald Minor of Kentucky, and Joe Minor of Bristol, Va.; sisters, Joyce Boggs of Bristol, Va., and Bernice Dunkin of Bristol, Va.; two grandsons, Kevin and David Minor; and wife of 34 years, Mabel D. Ward Minor. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Hershel Minor and Arthur Minor; and a grandson, Michael W. Minor.
