ACREE, JAMES BURAND KINGSPORT -- James Burand Acree, 85, 3041 Ridgemont Circle, died early Thursday morning, June 21, 2001, at his residence following an extended illness. He was born in Gordon County, Ga., but had made his home in the Kingsport area for several years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II. He was a retired carpenter. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Kingsport, where he was an elder of the church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nellie Ethel Marshall Acree in 1991; his son, Douglas Acree in 1982; and an infant daughter, Mary Lou Acree in 1942. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Ron Miller, Kingsport; four sons and daughters-in-law, Larry Stamburger and his wife, Sylvia, Mendotta, Ill., Steven Acree and his wife, Sherry, Gatesville, Texas, Kent Acree and his wife, Jill, Orlando, Fla., and Matthew "Matt" Acree and his wife, Deborah, Bluff City; 17 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Thomas Morgan Acree, Lacey, Wash.; and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours are from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Netherland Inn Road). Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the church with Bishop Legrande Boyer officiating. Burial will follow at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, Va. Pallbearers will be family members. ANDERS, VIRGINIA RUTH MINNICK Virginia Ruth Minnick Anders, 62, of 163 Olen St., Bristol, Va., died Saturday, June 16, 2001, in Greendale Home for the Aged. She was a native of Washington County, Va., and a lifelong resident of the Bristol area. She was an employee of Holiday Inn and Hava-A-Tampa and a homemaker. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church for 25 years. She was preceded in death by her father, James Lloyd Minnick. Survivors include: two sons, Jimmy Anders of Bristol, Va., and Gary Anders of Roanoke; daughter, Janet Anders of Sadelia, Mo.; mother, Mary Minnick of Bristol, Va.; two grandchildren; sister, Barbara Moore of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; and five brothers, James Minnick of Richmond, Roy Minnick of Red Boiling Springs, Tenn., Kenny Minnick of Vacarille, Calif., Allen Minnick of Cocoa, Fla., and Douglas Minnick of South Carolina. ARGO, ZELMA LORENE BLUFF CITY -- Zelma Lorene Argo, 84, of 154 Holston Drive died Friday, June 8, 2001, at Bristol Memorial Medical Center following a brief illness. She was the widow of the late Rev. Sidney W. Argo, and a member of Volunteer Baptist Church, Bristol, Tenn. She was a faithful, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother; and she was also loved by all who knew her. Mrs. Argo was the daughter of the late Call M. and Annie Reed Gordon. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Sidney Argo in 1997. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Sybil and Robert Harmon of Bluff City; two sons and daughters-in-law, Arnold A. and Kay Argo of Crystal River, Fla., and Ernest Weldon and Carole Argo of Kissimmee, Fla.; one sister, Camilla O'Connell of Kerville, Texas; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews also survive. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home, Tenn. He was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area and a son of the late Hubert and Elma Carmack Baird. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Hubert Baird and Donald Baird; and a sister, Mary Baird. He was a Tennessee High School graduate and attended King College. He had served as a chairman of the March of Dimes Telerama. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served as a captain in the European war at the Battle of the Bulge. He was an insurance salesman with the North American Insurance Co. and a member of State Street United Methodist Church. Survivors include his daughter, Suzanne Canter and son-in-law, Mike Canter, both of Blountville; two granddaughters, Robin Canter and Stephanie Canter; two nieces, Shirley Woods and Mary Ann Way, both of Kingsport; his sister-in-law, Louise Baird of Kingsport; and several great and great-great nieces and nephews. BANNER, FRED RAWLEIGH BOONE, NC -- Fred Rawleigh Banner, 71, passed away Monday, June 25, 2001, at his residence. He was a former citizen of Bristol and a member of the New Hope Baptist Church. He was employed for many years at the H.P. King Co. and, prior to his retirement, he was employed by T.R.W. of Boone. He was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area; he was a plumber and of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ollivean Barrett. Survivors include: father, Vernon F. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Combs; and a daughter, Eudell Napier. BOLING, JIMMY W. FORT PIERCE, Fla. -- Jimmy W. Boling, 63, died Monday, June 25, 2001 in Fort Pierce. Mr. Boling was born in Bluff City, a son of the late Jim and Mary Boling. He was a 29-year resident of Fort Pierce, coming from Orlando. He was an iron worker and a member of Iron Workers Union Local 402. BOWLING, DELMAR I. CEDAR BLUFF -- Mr. Delmar I. Bowling, 51, passed away Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at his home following a brief illness. Born in Tazewell County, Va., he was the son of Mrs. Eva Asbury Riley of Bandy, Va., and the late Walter Benjamin Bowling. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a disabled coal miner. In addition to his mother, he is survived by: five sisters, Sharon Ruth Davis of Cedar Bluff, Wilma Sparks of Bandy, Darlene Brewster of Statesville, NC, Barbara Adams of North Wilkesboro, NC, and Cora Riley of Richlands; three brothers, William Roger Bowling of Raleigh, NC, Donald Perry Bowling of Columbus, Ohio, and James Dexter Bowling of Peebles, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews also survive. She was the daughter of the late Link and Gertrude Sanders Ford. Mrs. Boy was a member of Rockhold United Methodist Church and the Bluff City Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star. She was a retired teacher from the Sullivan County School System. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert "Rob" Boy and son Rev. Robert "Bob" Boy; and also two brothers, Harry Ford and Clifford Ford. Survivors include daughter-in-law, Wilma Cox Boy of Bluff City; grandchildren, Lee and Valynn Boy of Jamestown, NC, and Larry and Emily Boy Holmberg of Chesterfield, Mass.; four great-grandsons, Nathan, David and Jacob Boy and Lars Holmberg; two great-granddaughters, Rachel Boy and Kirsten Holmberg; and several nephews and nieces also survive. BROOME, JAMES D. James D. Broome, 83, Bristol, Tenn., died Sunday, June 10, 2001, at Select Specialty Hospital - Tri-Cities of Bristol, Tenn. He was born in Jacksonville, Ala., a son of the late Matthew Emory Broome and Rebecca McReynolds Broome, and had lived in Bristol since 1945. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and World War II and retired from United Telephone Company/Sprint in 1976. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the American Legion and the Pioneer Club. Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Roberta Johnston Broome; a daughter, Nadine Broome Thompson of Ehrhardt, S.C.; two sons, James Franklin Broome of New Bern, N.C., and Keith Herbert Broome of Bristol, Tenn.; a stepdaughter, Elizabeth Johns of Bristol, Tenn.; sisters, Mary Holden of Jacksonville, Ala., and Estelle Ingram of Alexandria City, Ala.; brothers, Clifford Broome of Kingsport, Monroe Broome of Jacksonville, Ala., and Emory Broome of Gadsen, Ala.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. DISQUE, JOE June 11, 2001, Joe Disque, let go of his human body surrendering his soul where angels fly, and his spirit can love and live forever. He was a retired bus driver from the Sullivan County School Systems. "Curley" Johnson, 71, of 1628 Long Crescent Rd., Bristol, Va., went to be with the Lord unexpectedly Saturday, June 9, 2001, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. Born in Bristol on Nov. 4, 1929, a son of the late Herbert F. Johnson Sr. and Mary Lee Hensley Johnson Jessee, he had lived in the Bristol/Mendota area most of his life. He was a graduate of Virginia High School and received a bachelor's degree in 1956 from King College. Mr. Johnson was an Air Force veteran of the Korean conflict. He retired in 1991 as manager of the Virginia Employment Commission, but still worked there as a part-time employee. Mr. Johnson was a member and deacon of the Open Door Baptist Church, where he sang in the choir and was president of the Senior's Group. He was a member of the Woodmen of the World. Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by one brother, Herbert F. Johnson Jr. Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Frances Bray Johnson of the home; and one niece. LIVINGSTON, EARL LESTER Earl Lester Livingston, beloved husband and father, died on Tuesday, June 26, 2001, at NHC, Bristol, Va. He was 87 years old. Born on June 25, 1914, in Scott County, Va., to the late Abraham and Callie Livingston. Mr. Livingston was raised in Blackwater, Va. He married Vada Dolly Willis on Nov. 28, 1936. He was a retired employee of Klopman Industries and a member of North Bristol Baptist Church. Surviving besides his widow are: daughters, Helen L. Harrington and Callie L. Bowery; four grandchildren, Timothy Daniel Harrington, Beth Anne Leonard, Callie Renee Emmert and Dolly Mae Terlizzi; three great-grandchildren, Cody and Eli Leonard and Caleb Emmert; sister, Carrie Weatherly of Jacksonville Beach, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. LONG, RONALD LEONARD KINSPORT -- Ronald Leonard Long II, 30, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center emergency room as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was a lifelong resident of Kingsport and a son of Ronald Leonard Long, Kingsport and Brenda Lou Powers, Nickelsville, Va. He was a 1990 graduate of Daniel Boone High School. He was employed by Virginia Sealing Products. He attended Rogersville Baptist Temple. In addition to his parents, surviving are his loving wife, Tammy Smith Long of the home; one daughter, Anna Joyce Doss of the home; one son, Jerry Matthew Long of the home; one sister, Vanessa Rene Long of Kingsport; and one brother, Jason Long of Kingsport. MANUEL, MILDRED LEE FRYE Mildred Lee Frye Manuel, 73, of Bristol, Tenn., went to be with the Lord on Friday, June 29, 2001, at Wellmont Hospice House. She was a native of Saltville and had made her home in Bristol most of her life. She was a daughter of the late Sam and Elizabeth Surber Frye. She was the widow of Oscar Manuel Sr. She was also preceded in death by a grandson, Michael Malone. She had retired from Bristol Regional Medical Center as food service supervisor after 29 years of service. She was a member of Victory Baptist Church and the Willing Workers Sunday School Class.
