She was a lifelong resident of the Blountville area and a receptionist for the dental office of Dr. Jewell and Jack Smythe. She was the daughter of the late John Harrison Fauver and Tessie Fauver and a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Blountville. Survivors include: son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie D. and Lisa Barger, Blountville; daughter, Janet Barger Clendenin, Bristol, Tenn.; special sister and brother-in-law, Mary Sue and Johnny Smithey, Blountville; brother and sister-in-law, John Fauver Jr. and Geraldine Fauver, Blountville; granddaughter, Kim Clendenin, Bristol, Tenn.; two grandsons, Jay Clendenin, Blountville, and Brett Barger, Blountville; and several nephews. BELL, ALBERTA HICKMAN Alberta Hickman Bell, 95, went to be with her Lord, Monday, April 23, 2001, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was a Bristol native and resided with her daughter at 313 Timberlane Road, Bristol, Tenn. She was a charter member of Euclid Avenue Baptist Church for more than 70 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Denver Bell. She is survived by her daughter, Betty Starks Hodge of Bristol; three grandchildren, Allyson Hodge, Scott Sparks and Steve Sparks along with his wife, Heather; one great-grandson, Caleb Sparks; and a son-in-law, Robert Hodge; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Jannie White. The funeral services will be conducted at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon in the Oakley-Cook Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Steve Brown officiating. BLEVINS, CARL DAVID Sr. ANDOVER, Va. -- Carl David Blevins Sr., 77, died Tuesday, April 24, at Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap, Va. He had worked for the Interstate Railroad before becoming disabled in a train accident on Dec. 9, 1970. Survivors: wife, Peggy Reasor Blevins, Andover; one daughter and her husband, Donna Lynne Blevins and Gregory Wayne Weitzel, Floral City, Fla.; one son and his wife, Carl David Jr. and Susan Blevins, Toronto, Canada; grandchildren, Sarah and Jason Blevins, Toronto; brother, Paul Blevins, Mendota, Va.; sister, Elizabeth Moore, Bristol, Va.; sister-in-law, Mrs. Robert Blevins, Shady Valley, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Bloomer, 86, of Bristol, Tenn., passed away Sunday, April 15, 2001, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born in Wise County on Jan. 23, 1915, to the late George and Helen Bledsoe Bloomer. He was a veteran of World War II serving under General Patton during the Battle of Bulge. He was a member of VFW and American Legion. Mr. Bloomer was a machinist retiring from Raytheon Corp. He was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Maggie L. Robinette Bloomer; second wife, Willie Denton Bloomer; sisters, Selma Robinette, Juanita Williams, Evelyn Finnegan and Genevria Bloomer. Surviving are two sisters, Violet Smith and Marcille Frazier, both of Weber City, Va., one brother, Tom Bloomer, Bluff City; nephews, Tom Frazier and Darrell Robinette; nieces, Helen Greear and Janice Frazier; great-nephew, Justine Frazier; and great-niece, Alexandra Frazier. BREEDING, EULA EUNICE BARNETT JACKSON, Ohio -- Eula Eunice Barnett Breeding, 76, of State Route 327, died Monday evening, April 23, 2001, at her residence following a one-year illness. She was born in Catoosa, Tenn., Jan. 22, 1925, daughter of the late Jack and Hester Barron Hale. She was a graduate of Bristol Tennessee High School and a member of the Baptist faith. She was a former employee of the Raytheon missile plant. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, David Barnett, who was killed in Vietnam; and her husband Zeb Barnett in 1978; also several brothers and sisters. Surviving relatives are husband, Arnold Breeding; one son, Dennis Jack Barnett of Jackson; two brothers, Louis Scott of Waverly, Ohio, and Paul Hale of Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews. He was born in Hiltons, Va., and was a resident of Sullivan County most of his life. Mr. Bright was a charter member of Throne of Grace Baptist Church, where he served as treasurer for over 25 years. He will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Franklin and Bertie Ethel Laughlin Bright. Survivors include his wife, Jeanette Shaffer Bright of the home; three sisters, Nannie McMurray, Blountville, and Minnie Suthers and Jewell Bartley, both of Kingsport; two brothers, Alvie P. BROWN, ORA OSBORNE Mrs. Ora Osborne Brown, 94, a resident of Bristol, Tenn., died Wednesday in Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was a native of Sullivan County, Tenn., and daughter of the late Charles and Lilly Hicks Osborne. She was a charter member of Tennessee Avenue Baptist Church, where she was a former Sunday school teacher and church treasurer. She was an active member of the March for Christ Organization of Vance Bible Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, E. R. Brown and sons, John E. Bowery Jr. and Charles Bowery. Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Martha and Haynes Watson of Bristol, Tenn., Elinor and Wimpy Gray of Bluff City; daughter-in-law, Peggy Mitchell Bowery of Bristol, Tenn.; special son-in-law, Mack Mottern of Bristol, Tenn.; stepchildren, Edith and Page McClellan of Bluff City, and Mildred and Pat Moore of Atlanta; sister, Rosene Salyer of Kingsport; and brothers, C J. BURCH, VERNON R. BLUFF CITY, Tenn. -- Retired U.S. Army Maj. Vernon R. Burch, 65, of Cherokee Park, passed away Thursday, April 5, 2001, at the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home, Tenn. He was born in Gastonia, NC, moved to the Bristol area at age 5, attended Tennessee High School and attended the Virginia Avenue United Methodist Church. He was a graduate of East Tennessee State University, where he received a bachelor of science degree, and he received his master's degree at Georgetown University. During his military career, he served in France, Germany, Korea and Vietnam as platoon leader, company commander and hospital administrator. He was a drug and alcohol abuse officer and instrumental in setting up the first drug and alcohol abuse program through the Force and Development Division of the Walter Reed Hospital Military District in Washington, DC. He was a pilot in the Civil Air Patrol. He was a member of the Bristol Elks Lodge 232 and had held several post chair offices. He was a life member of the Patton-Crosswhite VFW Post \6975, the American Legion Post \145 where he had served as historian. He was a lifetime member of the Retired Officers Association and an avid golfer. He had served as head of the Medical Advisory Team for the Guard and Reserve units in Georgia. After his retirement from the military, he was Director of Operations for Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, Tenn. After his extended military career, he returned to Bristol to care for his ailing mother, the late Laura Burch. Survivors include: wife, Priscilla Smith Burch; stepdaughter, Kimmi Smith; step-granddaughter, Kristin Burns; brother, David Burch; uncle and aunt, G.J. "Toots" and Gladys Burch; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Frieda and Bill Morrell; sister-in-law, Mary McGee; special niece-in-law, Regina Davis; four nieces; and several cousins. DANIEL, MARY VIVIAN HAINES Mary Vivian Haines Daniel, 90, of Bristol, Tenn., died Monday, April 16, 2001, at Wellmont Hospice House. Born in Knoxville, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late Alonzo W. and Annie Ely Haines. Mrs. Daniel was a graduate of the University of Kentucky where she majored in history and Romance languages. She also earned a master's degree in ancient history from East Tennessee State University. A teacher for over 24 years, she taught Latin and Humanities at Greenbrier College for Women, Lee and Tazewell County Schools and at Bristol Virginia High School. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Colonial Dames of the Seventeenth Century, Daughters of the American Colonists, United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Gibbon History Club of Bristol. She was a recipient of numerous honors and awards including the Alpha Xi Delta Order of the Rose, the King College Master Teacher Award, the Appalachian Regional Award for the Promotion of Classical Studies and the LIfe Membership Award, Presbyterian Women of Central Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Daniel was a member of Central Presbyterian Church, Bristol, Va., for over 50 years and served her church as historian and Bible Leader for Women of the Church. She was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Thomas N. Daniel Sr., a Bristol commercial and portrait photographer, who died Aug. 1, 1980. He was a Bristol native and a son of the late Joseph R. Erwin Sr. and Della Mae Hice Erwin. Mr. Erwin enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in the spring of 1951 and was commissioned a second lieutenant. He served as a naval gunfire spotter for the battleship USS Missouri during the Korean conflict, achieving the rank of captain. Following his military service, he began a career in public education. He was a teacher, coach and administrator in both Tennessee and Virginia school systems. Throughout his career, he was recognized often for his commitment to public education. Mr. Erwin retired from Bristol Tennessee city schools in 1990. He was a member of Windsor Avenue Presbyterian Church, the Bristol Evening Lions Club and the Masonic Lodge. FANKHOUSER, MARY BETTY Mary Betty Fankhouser, 77, of Bristol, Tenn., passed away at 5:40 a.m. Sunday, April 15, 2001, at her residence following a short illness. Born in Roanoke, Va., a daughter of the late James R. and Lula DeBusk Dent, she had resided in Bristol since 1957. Mrs. Fankhouser received her bachelor's degree and R.D. degree in Nutrition from James Madison University. She was a member of the American Dietetic Association and the Tennessee Dietetic Association. Mrs. Fankhouser was a member of the American Association of University Women. She retired in 1993 as Director of Food Services at Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was a member of Virginia Avenue United Methodist Church, moving from State Street United Methodist Church, where she had served as a Sunday School teacher for many years. Mrs. Fankhouser was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Russell Lewis Fankhouser, in 1990. Survivors include: one daughter and son-in-law, Holly and Bryant Herring of Bristol, Tenn.; one son and daguther-in-law, Russell J. and Cindy Fankhouser of Bristol, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Bradley J. GIBSON, LINDA A. Mrs. Linda A. Gibson, 58, of 223 Grove Park Drive, Bristol, Tenn., passed away Thursday, April 26, 2001, at Wellmont Hospice House. Mrs. Gibson was a native of the Bristol area, but had 20 years of traveling all around the world with her husband while he was serving in the Navy. They lived in London, England, southern Spain and Washington, DC. She was a graduate of Virginia High School, where she had received several band honors. He then was a federal inspector for the government. Prior to retiring, he was employed with the security department at American Furniture. He was a veteran of World War II, serving 61/2 years in the Army. During his service career, he served in the South Pacific. Having achieved the rank of first sergeant, Battery A, 925th Anti Aircraft Artillery (AW) Battalion, he was given the Good Conduct Medal and Two Bronze Stars. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4667 in Marion, Va. He was of the Baptist faith serving as a deacon and Sunday School teacher for many years. He was a member of the East Bristol Baptist Church and formerly was a member of Rosedale Baptist Church. HODGE, BARBARA E. Barbara E. Hodge, 75, a resident of Wellmont Hospice House, went home to be with the Lord at 2:07 p.m. Saturday, March 31, 2001, at the center. Born in Pikeville, Ky., a daughter of the late John B. and Hannah Branham Lane, she had resided in the Bristol area since 1966, moving from Raymond, Wash. Mrs. Hodge retired from Bristol Memorial Hospital in 1986 after 13 years of service as a CNA. She was a member of Midway Baptist Church in Gate City. Mrs. Hodge will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Orville H. "Shorty" Hodge, January 17, 2001; by a daughter, Shirley Lynn Sexton; and a brother, J.B. Lane. HOOKS, ARTHUR KELLY WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Arthur Kelly Hooks, husband of Leony Hooks, 1341 Green River Road, died March 10, 2001. Mr. Hooks, known to his friends as "Kelly," was born in 1925 in Bristol, Tenn. He was the son of Mrs. Edith (Kelly) Hooks and Dr. Arthur Hooks. After high school, Mr. Hooks served for three years in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He then received a bachelor's degree from William and Mary and another BS and an MS degree in electrical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He worked as an electrical engineer and later as a patent agent until his death. Mr. Hooks lived for 47 years in Williamstown, where he was an active member and chair of the planning board and was named the town's "Man of the Year" in 1970. He was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph Luther Hooks, in 1991. Mr. Hooks is survived by his wife, Leony Hooks; his sister, Mary Graham (Hooks) Frith; his aunt, Belle Kelly of Norfolk, Va.; and his cousin, Palmer Rutherford of Portsmouth, Va. KREGER, FRED LA VERN Fred La Vern Kreger, 85, 101 Colooney Circle, Bristol, Tenn., died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, in Wellmont Hospice House. He was a native of Washington County, Va., son of the late Claude and Mary Branch Kreger. He was member of State Street United Methodist Church, and was a retired industrial engineer with Union Carbide, where he served over 36 years. He was a member of Bristol Host Lions, past president and club builder Oak Ridge Lions Club and contributed to the development of Leo Clubs. He was a member of Society of Manufacturing Engineers. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lucile Gray Kreger, Bristol, Tenn.; and sister, June Kreger Woodward, Holston, Va. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 7 p.m. Thursday in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Ross Dampier officiating. LARKIN, SUE ETTA MORRELL KINGSPORT -- Sue Etta Morrell Larkin, 80, 412 Bell Ridge Road, died at 12:35 p.m. Thursday, April 12, 2001, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center after an extended illness. Born in Bluff City, she had lived in Kingsport since 1947. Mrs. Larkin was a member of Higher Ground Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a sister, Helen DeVault; and a brother, Charles Morrell. Surviving are her husband of 53 years, John Wallace Larkin, Kingsport; two daughters, Kathy Lisenby, Kingsport and Martha Walsh and husband, Steve, West Palm Beach, Fla.; one son, John W. Larkin and wife, Ruth, Greer, SC; five grandchildren, James Lisenby, David Lisenby, Chad McMurray, Ryan Larkin and Kelly Larkin; a sister, Edna Rasar, San Antonio, Texas; a brother, Eugene Morrell, Bluff City; and several nieces and nephews. LAWSON, GLENN CHARLES "LUM" Glenn Charles (Lum) Lawson, 75, of Bristol, Va., died Sunday, April 8, 2001, in Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. Born in Esserville, Va., he was the son of the late Hobert and Verna Lawson. He was retired from Reynolds Metals of Richmond, Va., and moved to Bristol after his retirement. He was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard, serving during World War II and was of the Baptist faith. He is survived by brothers, Kenneth Ray Lawson and Robert C. Lawson, both of Lexington, Ky., Billy Ray Lawson, Beaufort, S.C., and Jimmy Lawson, Bradenton, Fla.; stepmother, Lettie Lawson, Bradenton, and several nieces and nephews. LAWSON, JOSEPH WILMOTH "UNCLE JOE" ROGERS Joseph Wilmoth Rogers "Uncle Joe" Lawson of Bristol Tennessee, a longtime civic and business leader, died April 17, 2001. He was 87. He was the founder of Southeastern Employers Service Corp. and was active in Lions International, Bristol United Way, Bristol Chamber of Commerce, Sequoyah Council Boy Scouts of America and other community agencies. He was born in Elkins, W.Va., on Sept. 1, 1913, to Henry Thomas Lawson and Emma Katherine Wilmoth Lawson, who were tenant farmers. He was the seventh son in a family of 10 children. Mr. Lawson grew up during the Great Depression, worked his way through Berea College, Berea, Ky., and graduated with honors from Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va. Milligan College in Milligan, Tenn., awarded him an honorary doctor of letters degree. He married Marguerite Eileen Fierbaugh during his sophomore year in 1933, and after college, he worked as a farmer. He sold produce and eggs to make a living. He was hired by the First National Bank of Peterstown, W.Va., as assistant cashier. He later moved to Princeton, W.Va., where he became an insurance salesman. With the advent of World War II, Mr. Lawson attempted to join the Army, but after a back injury, he was instead assigned to the U.S. Department of Labor as a compliance officer, leaving that position in 1944. In the same year, Mr. Lawson founded Southeastern Employers Service Corporation (SESCO Management Consultants), which was among the first management consulting firms in the United States specializing in human resource management systems and labor relations. Mr. Lawson served as Mayor of Princeton, W.Va., providing leadership that enabled the city to pay off staggering debt. He also was instrumental in the formation of that town's "city manager" form of government. He was recognized by the Junior Chamber of Commerce as an Outstanding Young Man. He contributed property to the Salvation Army for a new facility and personally led the campaign to raise funds necessary for its construction. The Salvation Army awarded Mr. Lawson an honorary Colonel rank, and the Bronze Citation for outstanding service. He organized Princeton's first United Way, and he served as its president. Mr. Lawson moved to Bristol, Va., in 1957, where he continued to remain active in community service. He served on the Board of the Bristol United Way for 20 years, and he was its president in 1959 and 1960. Mr. Lawson served the Boys Club, Greater Bristol Area Chamber of Commerce, Sullins Academy, Sequoyah Council of Boy Scouts of American (recipient of the Silver Beaver Award and president of the Council for two terms, doubling Bristol's donations), Paramount Foundation, and King College, and he was a founding partner of Hands On! Museum (contributing over 100 wildlife specimens). At King College, Mr. and Mrs. Lawson established a scholarship for needy students in memory of their two early-departed children, Frances Elizabeth Lawson and David Thomas Lawson. They also established the Lawson-Fierbaugh Foundation that donates to charity and educational institutions in the region. Most recently, he and Mrs. Lawson donated to Sullins Academy its new 22-acre campus. Mr. Lawson was a lifelong member of Lions International. As a member of Lions, he served in numerous local offices, as district governor, and as a member of the International Board of Directors during 1967, 1968 and 1969. He thereafter served as Ambassador of Good Will to the World for Lions. He served as the Virginia State Necrology Chairman for over 45 years. Mr. Lawson was a founding member of the Christian Science Society in Bristol, Tenn., and a life member of the Bristol Host Lions Club. He was inducted into the Wellmont Foundation Citizen Hall of Fame in 1995. In 1996, Mr. Lawson was inducted into the Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame.
