AKARD, ELDRIDGE ERLANGER, KY. -- Eldridge D. Akard, 74, passed away March 10, 2001, at Villa Springs Health Care Home following an extended illness. He was a native of Sullivan County and had lived in Erlanger for several years prior to his retirement from Piedmont Air Lines. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clint and Abbie Akard; his brother, George Akard; and sister, Elizabeth Berry. Survivors include his wife, Celestine; son, Charles O. Akard; brother, Charles Akard and sister-in-law, Sally Akard; one sister, Virginia Sizer; sister-in-law, Betty Akard; and several nephews and nieces. ANDERSON, REGINA ANN Regina Ann Anderson, 43, of Bristol, TN, passed away Wednesday, March 14, 2001, in Hickory, NC. Miss Anderson was a native of Welch, WV, but had lived in the Bristol area for the past 21 years. She was a retired employee of Bristol Regional Medical Center and was preceded in death by her stepfather, Woodrow Underwood. Survivors include her mother, Ella Underwood of Bristol, TN; two sisters, Ella Hockett of Raleigh, NC, and Terri Whistlehunt of Hickory, NC; and one brother, Eugene Anderson of Spanishburg, WV. ANDERSON, TINA WOOD Tina Wood Anderson, 98, of Bristol, TN, passed away at 2:35 a.m. Monday, March 19, 2001, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born in Big Moccasin, VA, a daughter of the late Jonathan and Cynthia Bradley Wood. Mrs. Anderson had resided in Bristol since 1968, moving from Kingsport. She retired from Holston Valley Community Hospital in 1968. Mrs. Anderson was a member of Lynn Garden Baptist Church in Kingsport. She also served as a volunteer at Holston Valley Community Hospital and Bristol Memorial Hospital as a pink lady working in the gift shop. Mrs. Anderson was preceded in death by her husband, Jess F. Anderson in 1948; one sister, Ann Woods; one brother, Joe Wood; and a grandson, Louis Anderson. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Jess F. and Sarah Anderson Jr. of Johnson City and L. Lowell and Barbara Anderson of Bristol, TN; four grandchildren, Mark Anderson of Johnson City, Lelanda Brunson of Durham, NC, Gloria Rowley of Lawrenceville, GA, and Laura Taylor of Stockbridge, GA; and five great-grandchildren. He was a son of the late Norman and Turla Arnold, and was of the Presbyterian faith. BAILEY, OSCAR C. KINGSPORT, TN -- Oscar C. Bailey of 4765 Lone Star Road, passed away at 10 p.m. Tuesday at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center. He was born and lived his entire life on the family farm. He as the youngest son of the late Virginia McClellan Bailey and Dr. R.K. Bailey. Mr. Bailey was a farmer and real estate broker in the Sullivan Gardens area. He was a veteran of World War II with 31//2 years of service. Two years and three months was served in the European Theater. He was a member of the American Legion. Mr. Bailey was director of Sullivan County Farm Bureau for 40 years and supervisor for Sullivan County Soil Conservation District for 36 years. He was a member of Glen Alpine United Methodist Church since 1940 where he served as Sunday School superintendent. He also served on the Evangelism and Visitation committees as long as health permitted. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by wife, Frances Deakins Bailey (Aug. 8, 2000); one brother and sister in infancy; and four brothers, Newton, Harlan, Ralph and Rufus Bailey. BAKER, JOHN ROBERT John Robert Baker, 91, of Bristol, VA, died Monday, March 26, 2001, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born in Maces Springs, Scott County, VA, a son of the late I.S. and Ella Barker Baker, and had lived in Bristol since 1933. He worked at Bristol Newspapers for 13 years and was a farmer. He was a member of Windsor Avenue Presbyterian Church and a former member of Three Springs United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Davis Baker. Survivors include a daughter, Kathryn B. Lilley of Bristol, VA; a sister, Dorothy Fleenor of Kingsport; three brothers, Leonard Baker and Eugene Baker, both of Bristol, VA, and Billy Joe Baker, of Ocala, FL.; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Bays was a native of Wise County, but had lived in Bristol for the past 47 years. He was a retired employee of Hav-a-Tampa, Bristol, TN, and a U.S. Army veteran, having served on Okinawa in World War II. He was a member of Walnut Grove Presbyterian Church. BENTLEY, WESLEY ROBERT Wesley Robert Bentley, 82, died Monday, March 20, 2001, at the Cambridge House, Bristol, TN. Born April 6, 1918, in the Paperville Community, Bristol, he was the son of the late Rev. John Wesley and Willie Mae Atwell Bentley, and lived most of his life in Sullivan County. An avid hunter and out doors man, he also enjoyed camping and hunting in Sugar Grove, VA, and the surrounding Holston Mountains in Bristol. He was a member of Jacob's Creek Civilian Conservation Corps. He served in the U.S. Army, reaching the rank of master sergeant before leaving the service in 1943. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Katy Lou Wright Bentley. Survivors include daughters, Betty L. Thompson, JoAnne Sampson, Gladys Roark and Frances Rosenbalm, all of Bristol; and son, Bobby G. Bentley, Abingdon. Also surviving are two sisters, Nora Boling, Bristol, and Martha E. Her favorite community service was working for the veterans through the annual poppy sales where she served as chairman for a number of years. She also donated her time through the Ladies Auxiliary to serve as a volunteer at the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center and was a volunteer worker for the veterans at Bristol Nursing Home. DOLLAR, BILLY ABINGDON -- Mr. Billy Dollar, 76, died Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at his home. He was a native of Anawalt, WV, and had lived most of his life in Anahiem, CA, before moving to Abingdon in 1999. HAMILTON, CHARLES ROBERT KINGSPORT, TN -- Charles Robert Hamilton, 74, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday morning, March 20, 2001, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center. He was born in Scott County, VA, and had lived in Kingsport since 1955, a son of the late Grover Cleveland (Chee) Hamilton and Rosa Rebecca Necessary Hamilton. He retired in 1986 from the acetate yarn division of Tennessee Eastman Company after 41 years of service. In his retirement he enjoyed woodworking, gardening and playing with his grandchildren. He was a member of the Pentecostal Powerhouse Church in Gate City, VA, a veteran with the United States Army serving with the Special Training Unit. He was a loving and faithful husband, father and grandfather. Other than his parents, his sisters, Virginia Ada Hamilton, Delilah Neeley, Roxie Neeley, Reba King, Kathleen Bishop and Ona Neely; and a brother, Elmer Hamilton, preceded him in death. HAMLIN, CHARLES M. "BUCK" JOHNSON CITY -- Charles M. "Buck" Hamlin Jr., 78, died Thursday, March 15, 2001, in the Johnson City Medical Center following a brief illness. Mr. Hamlin was a former resident of Old Greenwich, CT. He is a son of the late Charles M. and Marie Haines Hamlin, Bristol. Mr. Hamlin was employed in the furniture manufacturing industry for many years. He was retired from Empire Furniture Company and was a former superintendent at Bristol Door and Lumber Company. He was a World War II Army veteran who served with the 132nd Combat Engineers, 77th Division in the South Pacific. HUMPHREYS, HELEN HENRY Mrs. Helen Henry Humphreys, 93, of 1 Liberty Place, Bristol, VA, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Humphreys was a native of Sullivan County, TN, and a graduate of Bluff City High School and ETSC. She was a teacher in the Sullivan County School System, having taught at Blountville Elementary School for many years. She was a member of the Bluff City United Methodist Church and had attended the Blountville United Methodist Church for more than 60 years. She is survived by the following nieces: Marianne Racker of Orlando, FL, Nancy B. Dudney of Raleigh, NC, Mary Ann Wininger of Blountville, TN, and Helen H. Aman of Raleigh, NC; and nephews, James B. Newman of Durham, NC, William W. (Bill) Akard of Blountville, Joe Mike Akard of Blountville, Ron Akard of Kingsport and Lawrence Garland of Blountville. Also surviving are several great-nieces and great-nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the Akard Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Anderson and the Rev. INGE, THELMA ELIZABETH ARROWOOD LYNCHBURG, VA -- Thelma Elizabeth Arrowood Inge, 92, died Saturday, March 24, 2001, at Grace Lodge. She was born in Sullivan County and was a daughter of the late William Jerome and Dorcas Amanda Swiney Rogers. She lived most of her life in the Bristol area before moving to Lynchburg. She was a member of Campbell Avenue Baptist Church in Lynchburg. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Andrew B. Arrowood and Curtis T. Inge. Mrs. Inge is survived by two daughters, Lawana Smith of Bristol, TN, and Betty Figueroa of Los Angeles, CA; two sons, Butch Arrowood of Lynchburg and Buddy Arrowood of Harriman, TN; stepdaughter, Dot Auther, and stepson, Billy Inge, both of Lynchburg; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
