ALMANY, MAE M. Mae M. Almany, 94, of Bristol Virginia died Friday, Nov. 10, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was a native and lifelong resident of Bristol. She was a retired dietitian with the Bristol Virginia School System. She was the widow of Conly Edward Almany and was a member of State Street Church of Christ. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Survivors include one daughter, Betty A. Moore, Virginia Beach, VA, four grandchildren, Stephen Moore, Louisville, KY, Deborah Knepper, Cuyahoga Falls, OH, Anna Knowlton, Virginia Beach, VA, and Christopher Moore, Virginia Beach; six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Kathryn Boling, Dorothy Trivett and Grace Morrell, all of Bristol and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at State Street Church of Christ with Dan C. Bailey, minister, officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery. ATHEY, VIRGINIA PRINTZ BLOUNTVILLE, TN -- Virginia Printz Athey, 86, of Blountville passed away unexpectedly Monday, Nov. 20, 2000, at the Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center. She was born in Bradford, VA, a daughter of the late John Harry and Ella Shaver Printz. She was a homemaker. In addition to her parents, her husband, George W. Athey, preceded her in death. She is survived by her only son and daughter-in-law: Michael D. Athey and wife, Dianna, of Blountville. Calling hours will be 1-3 p.m. Wednesday at the East Lawn Funeral Home. BLEVINS, CARA RUTH DAVIDSON SALTVILLE, VA -- Mrs. Cara Ruth Davidson Blevins, 84, died Thursday (Nov. 16, 2000) in Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion, VA Mrs. Blevins was a member of the Church of Christ in Marion, VA She lived most of her life in Skygusty, WV, but was a native of Saltville, VA She came back to Saltville seven years ago and lived with Jesse and Carolyn South, her niece. Mrs. Blevins was the widow of William P. Blevins. Survivors include one son, Richard L. Blevins, Skygusty, WV; two grandsons: Ricky Blevins, Oak Hill, WV, and Billy Blevins, Skygusty, WV; one great-grandson, Brandon Blevins, Oak Hill, WV; and numerous nieces and nephews. BOOHER, HAZEL IRENE SHORES NEWCOMB Hazel Irene Shores Newcomb Booher, 83, of 108 Boadwalk, Bristol, TN, died Friday, Nov. 17, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born in Charleston, WV, but had lived her life in the Bristol area. She was a homemaker and the widow of Willie Claude Newcomb and Wallace B. Booher. She was the daughter of the late Charles and Fannie Shores. She is survived by a son, Wilis L. Newcomb; daughter, Ruth M. Olinger; daughter-in-law, Gail Poole; sister, Stella Shores of Bristol VA; five granddaughters; three grandsons; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. BOWMAN, ROLAND "BUCK" Roland "Buck" Bowman, 89, of 17069 Pine Hill Road, Bristol, VA, died Thursday, Nov. 9, 2000, at his residence. Mr. Bowman was a native and life long resident of the Washington County, VA, area, a retired employee of S. E. Massengill and a member of the Pine Hill Freewill Baptist Church. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Charmie Worley Bowman; four sisters; two brothers; and two great-great-grandsons. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Lewis Bowman of Bristol, VA; three daughters, Mrs. Hobert (Shirley) Arnold and Mrs. John (Peggy) Wooten, both of Abingdon, VA, and Mrs. James (Debbie) Gentry of Bristol, VA; one sister, Lula Bowman of Bristol, VA; two brothers, Carl Bowman of Bristol, VA, and Clarence Bowman of Bristol, TN. He was born in Russell County, VA, to the late C.C. "Doc" and Sarah King Bradley, moving to Bristol some 48 years ago. He was a retired coal miner from Carter Coal Co. after 27 years of service, a member of UMWA District 20 and a member and trustee of Pleasant View Baptist Church in Bluff City, TN. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family of 21 children,. He was preceded in death by his wife, Etta Conley Bradley; one son; and two daughters. His son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Dianne Bradley of Greeneville, TN., Mrs. Harlan (Mary Alice) Bernard of Bristol Tennessee and a son-in-law Troy Frazier of Bristol TN survive him along with 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Brown was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area and the daughter of the late Sam and Martha Swiney Peters. She was the widow of L. S. "Pet" Brown, a homemaker and was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church. BRYANT, MYRTLE B. GLADE SPRING, VA -- Myrtle B. Bryant, 84, of Glade Spring died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, in Cambridge House, Bristol TN. She was a native of Washington County, VA, and was the daughter of the late James Richard and Georgia Ann Thomas Heath. She was a widow of Robert E. "Bob" Bryant and a member of Rush Creek Primitive Baptist Church. She is survived by six sons, Carl Leslie Bryant and wife, Jean, of Abingdon, VA, Dale Lester Bryant and his wife, Lynn, of Bristol VA, John Richard Bryant and his wife, Helen, and M.A. Bryant and his wife, Vivian, both of Chilhowie, VA, Herbert Eugene Bryant of Damascus, VA, and Max Leonard Bryant and his wife, Gloria, of Bristol TN; two sisters, Mary Lou Bryant, of Marion, VA, and Nell Gray Dishman of Kennesaw, GA.; 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. BOLLING, GLADYS GRAHAM BRISTOL, VA -- Mrs. Gladys Graham Bolling died Thursday, Nov. 2, 2000, in the Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was a daughter of the late Rev. James N. Graham and Elizabeth Teddar Graham. She was the widow of Guy W. Bolling and was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Bolling. Mrs. Bolling graduated from high school in Milton, FL, where she later taught high school education. She was a former resident of Wise County, where she opened a beauty shop. She attended Clinch Valley College and received her bachelor of science degree from Lincoln Memorial University. She later received her master's degree from East Tennessee State University. She had taught elementary education and special education in the Wise County School System. She moved to Bristol in 1968 and began teaching in the Washington County School System at the Hamilton Elementary, High Point Elementary and Cleveland Elementary. Mrs. Bolling retired in 1976. She was a member of the Norton United Methodist Church and a member of MYF and the Women's Circle. Mrs. Bolling was a devoted mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Deborah B. Rock and Samuel Rock, of Bristol VA; a son, Michael C. Bolling of Bristol VA; a brother, John Graham of Wise, VA; five grandchildren, Michael Todd Bolling of Greenville, NC, Amanda Michelle Bolling of Norfolk, VA, Jacob D. Rock of Abingdon, Janie Lynn Rock of Bristol VA, and William Jared Rock of Bristol VA; a granddaughter-in-law, Michalle Rock; a great-grandson, Kenneth David Rock; several nieces and nephews; and a special caregiver, Barbara Eller. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5, 2000, in the Farris Funeral Chapel with Rev. Billy Gillespie and Rev. John Sarver officiating. BROWDER, THURMAN STALLARD Thurman Stallard Browder, age 82, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday evening Nov. 1, 2000, at Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol. Thurman was born Dec. 26, 1917, in Scott County, VA, a son of the late Henry and Mattie McMurray Browder and as a young man married Elsie Bethany Browder and at the time of her death they were married for 56 years. Thurman and his brother, John, founded Browders Chapel Church located in East Carters Valley in 1950, and he served his Lord faithfully, having taught Sunday School. He also preached and pastored in area churches. He retired from Tennessee Eastman in 1977, after 36 years of service. Thurman enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, he was a loving, devoted and sincere father, husband, brother and grandfather. Other than his parents and wife, a daughter Margaret, three brothers and five sisters preceded him in death. Thurman is survived by his sons and daughter-in-law, Larry and Brenda Browder and Henry "Buck" Browder, all of Kingsport; daughters: Almeda "Tuce" Browder and Barbara Browder, both of Kingsport; granddaughters and their husbands: Angie and Morris Baker and Amy and Lee Culbertson; great-grandchildren: Mackenzie and Michala and was expecting a third grandchild in January; sister: Lizzie Jane Shaffer of Blountville; and brother: Pat Browder of Blountville. CALDWELL, NANNIE PURCELL Nannie Purcell Caldwell, 80, of Sevierville, TN, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2000, following a lengthy illness. She was surrounded in love by her husband and children. She was born on July 15, 1920, at Hansonville, VA, the last of 11 children born to Robert and Susan Ferguson Price. She lived in Russell County for most of her life and was a housewife and devoted mother. During her life she touched many lives as a Sunday School teacher and in service to her community. The last two years of her life was spent with her husband. She will be remembered by all who loved her. She was witty, loving, caring and most of all devoted. Nannie touched many lives and all that were touched were better for having known her. Her strength was an inspiration to all. Nannie was preceded in death by her first husband, Edgar Clarence Purcell. She leaves behind a loving husband, Roy E. CARR, EVANS KINGSPORT -- Evans Carr, 73, of Kingsport, TN, passed away Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000, in the Wellmont Holston Valley Medical after a period of declining health. Evans was born in Flag Pond on Jan. 25, 1927, a son of the late Emory Lee and Altha Lee Shelly Carr. Evans lived most of his life in the Kingsport area and retired as director of community service for the City of Kingsport. A native of Arapahoe, CO, she had been a resident of Bristol Virginia from 1946 until moving to Hampton in 1978. Mrs. Gasteiger graduated from the Bartlesville Oklahoma Professional College and was formerly with the F. B. I. GAYEWSKI, STANLEY JOHN Stanley John Gayewski, 63, of Wilkes-Barre, PA, died Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2000. A native of Pennsylvania, Mr. Gayewski graduated from King College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, and received his masters of education from The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA. He served as assistant superintendent of Bristol Virginia Schools from 1973 until 1979. At the time of his death, Mr. Gayewski was employed with the school system in Wilkes-Barre. He was the son of the late Peter Marvin and Margaret VanBebber Gilly. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in World War II from 1942-1945 and the Reserve in Anticosta, VA, from 1945-1947. HAMILTON, OSCAR LEE Jr. Oscar Lee Hamilton Jr., 80, of Bristol VA died Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2000, at his residence. Mr. Hamilton is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ann Mitchell Hamilton. He was a native of Winchester, KY, but had lived in the Bristol area most of his life. He served as executive director, Bristol Redevelopment and Housing Authority with over 30 years of service. He was a World War II veteran, serving with the United States Army Air Corps as a flight instructor. Prior to serving as executive director, he was an employee of Dent K. Burk Associates and the Bristol Virginia Tennessean as controller, the Bristol Hardware Co., the Holston Hardware Co. and Blountville Hardware Co. and served as the Bristol Virginia City Clerk and Auditor. He had served on several Boards of Directors including Bristol Memorial Hospital, Boys Club of Bristol Virginia, Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials and the District Three Government Cooperative. He was a member of State Street United Methodist Church where he had also served on the administrative board. Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Catherine H. and Gary L. Robertson of Suffolk, VA., Eugenia H. and Hartwell H. Roper of Richmond, VA, and Marcia H. and Thomas E. Harris of Washington, NC He was preceded in death by one grandson, Craig Mitchell Robertson in 1995. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Hartwell H. Roper Jr., Paul Hamilton Roper and Ann Mitchell Roper; and three step-grandchildren, Thomas Brantley Harris, Jenny Michelle Harris and Tres Warren Harris. She was born in Lake City, FL, a daughter of the late James and Katherine Hatcher Porter, and lived most of her life in Plant City, FL. She was the widow of Dr. Courtney M. Clay and Paul R. JACKSON, FRED W. Fred W. Jackson, 84, of Bristol, Virginia, died Monday, Nov. 27, 2000, in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. He was born in Austinville, VA, a son of the late Thomas W. and Mae Young Jackson. He served in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II and retired from the Army Reserves as a lieutenant colonel following twenty years of service. He was a 1937 graduate of Emory & Henry College. Mr. Jackson was associated with the Hassinger Corporation for 45 years before retiring at age 79. He served as president of the Wythe County Kiwanis Club in 1950 and had been a member of the Kiwanis Club of Bristol since 1953. Upon moving to Bristol fifty years ago, he joined State Street United Methodist Church where he was a past chairman of the administrative board, taught Sunday School classes and was a longtime member of the church choir. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Eleanor Dean Jackson; a daughter and son-in-law, Jane and William S. Woerner of Palm City, Florida; a sister, Dora Shumate of Bristol, Virginia; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Jackson was preceded in death by a daughter, Janet Jackson Wright. MARTIN, VIOLA V. Viola V. Martin, 72, 141 East Market Street, Johnson City, died
Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000, at Bristol Regional Hospice House in Bristol, TN. A native of
Sullivan County, she was the daughter of the late William and Lucy Hyatt Cole. Mrs. Martin
was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by two brothers; and one sister.
Survivors include four sisters, Alice Cross of Bluff City, Margaret Carr of Johnson City,
Irene Godsey of Chuckey, and Clara Denton of Piney Flats; two brothers, Vernon Harry Cole

a member of Eastern Heights Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder. Mr. McCoy was
also the treasurer of the Advancer Sunday School Class and was an honorary board member at
Haven of Rest. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in WWII. Survivors include wife,
Elizabeth Stephenson McCoy; son-in-law and daughter, Lee and Ann McCoy Killaby; sisters,
Margie Hicks and Margaret McCoy, both of Blountville, TN, and Mabel Hicks of Piney Flats,
TN; granddaughter, Olivia Nicole McCoy of Bristol, TN; grandson, Patrick Killaby of

McKEARNEY, EILEEN MAGLIANO Eileen Magliano McKearney passed away suddenly on Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2000. Eileen was a native of Brooklyn and Long Island, NY, and a resident of Bristol, TN, since 1990. Eileen was 72 years young. Eileen was active in the Social Ministry's Food Pantry of St. Anne's Catholic Church for many years. Eileen also was active with the Special Olympics, raising money for the mentally and physically challenged and many other community organizations as well. Eileen is survived by her husband of 49 years, James; one daughter, Maureen Dice, Long Island, NY; two sons, James McKearney, Tucson, AZ, and Michael McKearney, Bristol, TN; five grandchildren, Timothy McKearney, Robert McKearney, Kathleen McKearney, James McKearney Jr. and Colleen McKearney.
