Stewart County, Tennessee Records Availability

Stewart County records are remarkably intact, despite erroneous stories of many records having been lost when the courthouse was burned by Federal troops in 1862.  Most county functions were suspended during the Civil War, except for deeds and marriages, and the records survived.

Here are the county records that have survived since the county’s formation in 1803, and where to find them.  Some of these records have been transcribed or extracted for this web site.  Original records are at the Stewart County Archives and at the Stewart County Courthouse in Dover.  Microfilmed copies of many records are at the Stewart County Public Library, the Clarksville-Montgomery County Public Library and the Tennessee State Library and Archives.
