John Bell (Jack) and Julia Ballou Kittrell
This is a picture made in 1896 of John Bell (Jack) and Julia Ballou Kittrell in front of their house
near Pleasant Shade. They are buried in the Kittrell-Dodger Cemetery. They both contracted colitis
and died within a few days of each other. Their house was located on the same site as the present
white frame house shown in the cemetery picture but faced Peyton's Creek (the opposite direction).
Jack was the son of Isham and Cary Proctor Kittrell and Julia was the daughter of Lorenzo Dow
and Mary Kittrell Ballou. They bought much of the old Leonard Ballou farm from the other heirs
of Dow Ballou. After their deaths, their son, Diogenes Ballou (Dodger) Kittrell, bought much of
the old farm from his siblings. The other people in the picture are (left of Jack), daughter, Jennie
Cullom Kittrell (later Byars), a grand baby, Julia and an adopted girl.
