Uncle Billie Canter Dies At the Age of 89 Years

(1935)

W. B. Canter, who was familiarly known as Uncle Billie, died at his home at Difficult Friday, March 1, 1935, after suffering some time from old age infirmities.  Mr. Canter lacked only seven days being 89 years of age.

When a young man he was united in marriage with Miss Lucy Kemp, who preceded him to the grave a few years ago.  To them were born seven children, those surviving are J. A. Canter and Mrs. Ada Williams of Difficult and B. C. Canter of Woodburn, Ky.  He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Sygne Holliman, one half sister, Mrs. Minnie Kemp and two half brothers, Mitch and Levi Canter, 18 grand children and 27 great grandchildren.

He professed faith in Christ many years ago and for about fifty years had been a member of the Christian church.  Mr. Canter’s life was one of clean, upright and honesty.  He lived a noble example before his children, he earned his bread by the sweat of his brown, and he was always cheerful and gay.

In the passing away of Mr. Canter Smith County loses one of its oldest and most beloved citizens.  Funeral services were conducted at the home by Eld. Crowder and burial was made in the Kemp burial grounds.
