Woodard Cemetery
The Woodard Cemetery is located in the Ash Hopper Hollow off of Hwy 85 near Defeated
community. It is on the Nesbitt farm behind the old J. B. Matthews house. There are
approx. 10-12 graves marked with fieldstones and one marker.

Nesbitt, Eliza W. 11 Feb 1876 - 7 May 1905*
"And her three children"

*This tombstone placed in recent years by the family and is therefore not in the
Smith County North cemetery book.

The "History of Smith County Tennessee 1986" page 764 states the following:
"Both Joseph Woodard (b.1816) and Louisa Davis (b.1826) were born in North Carolina.
They had six known children .....(3) James Washington Woodard (Called Rocking Chair Jim)
married 1st to Amanda Vance ....(They lived in the Ash Hopper Hollow and Amanda Vance
Woodard was buried at the back of the house where they lived.) Also three of Amanda's
children are buried there. ... James Washington Woodard and Amanda Vance Woodard's
children were (1) Eliza Willie Woodard married Robert King Nesbitt - She was buried
in the Ash Hopper Hollow in Smith County."
