The Waggoner/Carter Cemetery
The Waggoner/Carter Cemetery is located one-half mile west of South Carthage, TN. city
limits on the Owen farm at # 65 County House Circle. It is in front yard of old Carter house.

Inside a 29 X 34 iron fence are the following:
Waggoner, Celia, 7 May 1808 -23 Oct 1878 w/o Jacob Waggoner
"Joined the Hogan's Creek Baptist Church Sept 24, 1834"
"Her last words were I am dying, thank God, thank God"
(A fieldstone next to her stone is likely her husband Jacob Waggoner)
Waggoner, Elizabeth July 1834-10 Feb 1872 w/o Thomas Waggoner
Waggoner, Thomas 16 Aug, 1834 -10 June 1876
Carter, Mary S. 11 July 1859 - Oct 1913
Carter, John P. 30 Jan 1828 - 21 Apr 1904
Carter, Arthur B. 11 Mar 1875 - 2 Jan 1951
Hensley, W.D. 8 Aug 1914 -17 Dec 1917
"Budded on earth to bloom in heaven"
Located 8 feet outside NE corner of iron fence
are the following on a single large stone:

Uhles, Willie West 30 July 1878-No death date
Uhles, W.B. B & D 8 Nov 1894
Uhles, M.B.16 Aug 1896- No death date
Uhles, G.B. 25 Jan 1906- 22 Aug 1906
Uhles, G.W. 3 Sept 1910- No death date
Located 18 feet outside SE corner of iron fence was the following:
Whitley, Annie 12 Sep 1819 - 11 June 1849 w/o W.B. Whitley
Located on the outside of the east of iron fence are five fieldstones
Carter, J.S.(John Stowers) 10 Nov. 1792 - 8 May 1864 (hand engraved)
Another stone only Anne can be read- (w/o J.S. Carter)
In a March 31, 1937 transcription by Mrs Bessie Gibbs
and Miss Hattie Winfree the following were listed:
Waggoner, Jacob H. 29 May 1852 - 24 Dec 1892
Waggoner, Nancy G. (Bradford) 11 July 1859 - 20 Oct 1934
(These two graves were moved to Ridgewood Cemetery-Carthage in the 1950's)
They stated there were about 50 graves with rocks- no inscriptions.

Genealogical Notes:
Jacob Waggoner 1805-1893 and wife Celia Enoch 1808-1878 were my gggrandparents.
Their son Jacob Henderson Waggoner 1852-1892 and wife Nancy Green Bradford
1859 -1934 (d/o of Wm.C.Bradford & Selena Johnson) were my ggrandparents. Thomas
Waggoner was son of Jacob & Celia and had one child, Willie Waggoner, 1871-1926,
who was raised by his grandfather as his parents died when he was very young.
Mary Susan Carter (Waggoner) was the daughter of Jacob and Celia Waggoner and married
John P. Carter, son of John and Nancy Carter. John P. Carter joined Company D, 9th
Tennessee Cavalry on Aug 27 1862 at Hartsville Tn.. On John Hunt Morgan's raid into Ohio
he was captured at Buffington Island, Ohio on July 19, 1863. He was sent to Camp Morton
Prison in Indianapolis, IN on July 23, 1863. On Aug 17, 1863 he was forwarded to Camp
Douglas Prison in Illinois. On Dec 8, 1864 he swore a oath of allegiance to the United States
and was released on that date. He was light complexion, height 6 ft 2 in., hair black and eyes gray.
Amanda Eugenia Carter 1841-1911 dau of John & Nancy Carter married W.Claiborn West
on May 9, 1865. Their son John S. West 1866-1897 is buried here. Their daughter Willie
West married D.B. Uhles on 14 Apr 1892.
Annie Carter 1819 - 1849 daughter of John & Nancy Carter married Judge W.B. Whitley
1812-1889 (He is buried in Whitley Cemetery between Carthage and Gordonsville) At the
time of her death Annie had two girls and a son, William Exum Whitley. Wm became a doctor
who practiced in the Gordonsville area. He died in 1928 and is buried in Gordonsville Cemetery.
