Turney Cemetery
The Turney Cemetery is located near the Dekalb-Cannon County line on Hwy. 53 in an area that
was once Smith County. Joseph Turney is listed in the 1830 Smith County census. To reach the
cemetery coming from Liberty turn left at the bridge at the Cannon Co. line and follow this
road for one half mile keeping to the left when the road forks. The cemetery is in the woods
at the end of a field with a large stone approx. 10 foot from the gravel road. A chimney
remaining from an old house is just beyond this cemetery.

Turney, Joseph 10 Apr 1803 - 6 May 1852 Age 49 years 26 days.

Joseph Turney's wife Mary Turney 16 Oct 1808 - 27 Jul 1888 is buried about a mile away in the
Sycamore Baptist Church Cemetery.(see last two photos) Family members report the following to
be buried in the Turney Cemetery: Henry Turney (d 1843) and wife Elizabeth; Isaac Turney (d 1829);
George Turney (d 1821) and wife Katherine; and William Turney 1814 - May 22, 1857.
