Some of these 'death notices' were only a line in the community news sections and others are very long and very 'wordy' in an attempt to honor the deceased. Every effort was made to include the entire obituary.

  • Descendants of Matthias Chitwood; I. O. "Sonny" Chitwood; 1986; Gary and Brenda Chitwood, 161 Sharps Lane, Winfield, TN  37892, 423-569-8275; 556 pages with index, hardback.  The book begins with a list of illustrations, followed by a page of acknowledgements, an introduction by Reuben Chitwood [cousin to Sonny Chitwood], a page explaining the numbering system used in the book, and then the text itself, which follows the descendants of Matthias Chitwood (b. England ca. 1681 and d. 1754 in Cumberland Co. (now Powhatan Co. VA)). He had six sons, and the genealogy follows five of those sons: Matthias Jr., William, John, James, and Richard.  Touches numerous Scott County families and most of the Chitwoods found in this area and region.

  • The Ramblin' Lays From Tennessee:  A Family History; Clouis Eugene Lay; 1999; Scott County Historical Society, Huntsville, TN; 154 pages with index.  Traces the Lays and related families through the lineage of John M. Lay (1790-1874) and a personal narrative history of the author relating his years growing up in Scott Co, his life in the military, and his life following his retirement from the Air Force.  Mr. Lay provides an oral history section in which he has long conversations with his father and mother, the late George F. and Bertie Silcox Lay, concerning their farm life in Scott Co, their memories of those who came before them and how things were done in days gone by.  The book also includes a 17-page pictorial section featuring more than 100 photographs of the Lays and related families.

It's really two books combined into one.  It lists the members of the household and ages. This part of the book is indexed by head of household and if any other surname is listed within the household.  This book also includes the record of Alvin C. York and some of his family.   • Morgan County Newspaper Obituaries, 1916-1934; compiled by Julie Cromwell; 2001;  B & D Etc., 193 Phillips Flats Rd., Oneida, TN 37841; 179 pages with index; this book contains Newspaper Obituaries taken from the original copies of the "Morgan County Press" and "The Morgan County News" and some contributed obituaries from other sources. Information was copied 'AS IS' to preserve the language and wording of the time. There are lots of misspelled words and lots of missing punctuation. Some of these 'death notices' were only a line in the community news sections and others are very long and very 'wordy' in an attempt to honor the deceased. Every effort was made to include the entire obituary. Price $30.00 including tax, U.S. Mail shipping $4.50 for the first book and $1.25 for each additional book ordered.

Each individual entry on a particular person is followed by the volume and number of the newspaper, the date it was published and the page on which the article appears in that edition. The book has a comprehensive every-name index, which is further annotated by the type of article. The also index lists derived surnames which is especially useful for females where maiden names are usually lost in marriage.
