Scott County, Tennessee
1880 Mortality Schedule

This page was created 30 December 1996

The Scott County 1880 mortality schedule is contained on part (Mo-W) of the Federal Mortality Census Schedules 1850-1880 and Related Indexes, in the Custody of the Daughters of the American Revolution microfilm T655, roll 30 located in the National Archives.

Only 38 deaths were recorded for Scott County on the Federal 1880 Mortality Schedule; 18 white males, 19 white females, 1 black male and 11 of 38 deaths involved married persons.

I've transcribed the Scott Co, TN 1880 mortality schedule below. These tables may not display correctly on monitors with 640x480 resolution because there is so much data. I apologize until I can determine another method for displaying this information.

A couple of caveats need to be said about my transcriptions:

  1. The columns are numbered vice labeled to save space -- see below to interpret the column numbers;
  2. I abbreviated nativity and death locations to common two-letter state abbreviations (the enumerator only recorded the state name but in most cases spelled out the name);
  3. Names or numbers surrounded by brackets "[" and "]" indicate my best attempt at interpreting the enumerators hand writing -- I may be incorrect -- a question mark within brackets means I had no clue as to what the enumerator was trying to write;
  4. I truncated the name of the attending physician (column 17) to the last name for display purposes -- see the schedule image following each page transcription to see the full name as enumerated;
  5. The page numbers (356, 358, 359, 360) are the numbers handwritten in the upper right hand corner on each census page. Page 357 contained no entries and was not included here.and
  6. It took me a while to figure out what the enumerator meant when he indicated a time frame as a part of 30, i.e., 15/30 or 2/30 -- my guess is the enumerator was specifying days rather than months, e.g., 15/30 = 15 days while 5/12 = 5 months.

Column number representation:

  1. Number of family as given in volume numbered 2 -- Schedule 1.
  2. Name of the person deceased.
  3. Age at last birthday. If under 1 year give months in fractions, thus - 1/12, if under one month give days in fractions -- 1/30.
  4. Sex - Male (M), Female (F).
  5. Color - White (W), Black (B), Mulatto (Mu), Chinese (Ch), Indian (I).
  6. Single.
  7. Married.
  8. Widowed/Divorced (D).
  9. Place of birth of this person, naming the State or Territory of the U.S. or country, if of foreign birth.
  10. Where was the Father of this person born (as in column 9.)
  11. Where was the Mother of this person born (as in column 9.)
  12. Profession, Occupation, or Trade (Not to be asked in respect to persons under 18 years of age.)
  13. The month in which the person died.
  14. Disease or cause of death.
  15. How long a resident of the county. (If less than 1 year, state months in fractions, thus - 1/12.)
  16. If the disease was not contracted at place of death, state the place.
  17. Name of attending physician.

The following entries begin on line 1 and continue consecutively to line 3. The fourth entry begins on line 9 and continues consecutively to line 12.
