| Eliza Jane Barfield was born on Valentine's
Day, Feb. 14, 1818, near Murfreesboro, in Rutherford County, Tennessee.
She was the daughter of Williams and Harriet S. Tarkington Barfield.
Eliza was at least the second child in the family. Her sister, Susan,
born in 1816, and prolly other children, were born before her.
Her father was a tobacco broker in Rutherford County until the "tobacco
crash of 1819", which left him and his family close to ruin. Harriet
and the children removed to Natchez, Mississippi around 1820-21.
Williams had a land grant he bought in Natchez, Ms. in 1820 but he was
not with his family.
Eliza, called Jane by her Natchez friends, met and married John Samuel Coulson, one of Natchez's leading merchants, in 1838. They had a long life together and are buried in the Old City Cemetery in Natchez, Ms. |
