John Thomas Morris was a very talented carpenter and made a living building homes for others. It's been told he built a spiral staircase in a home in Springfield TN. that was very beautiful. He built his daughter Frances Morris Shepard a home in Stroudsville, Robertson Co. TN. She lived there until just before she died.   Her home was destroyed in the year 2005, but the home he built for himself and his family is still standing as of 2010.  It is located next to and around the curve from the Stroudsville Church of Christ. It was built just like the one similar to the house he built for his daughter Frances. John Thomas bought 3 acres and 30 poles of land on January 27, 1906 from J. F. Stroud. This is where he built his home. He later sold this house to Walter C. Head. In 2010 this house would be 104 years old. He knew how to build a home to last. He also built Charlie Shepard's store in Stroudsville.

It was told that John Thomas took alot of pride in how he wrapped his chewing tobacco. He owned a pocket watch and at one time he must have had it worked on because his initials were carved inside of the watch. The watch was made in 1898. His great-grandson,  John now has the watch and is considered a priceless family heirloom.

Children of JOHN MORRIS and LOU CARTER are:

ii.    FRANCES NORRID4 MORRIS, b. November 06, 1890, Cheatham Co. TN.; d. July 01, 1967, Stroudsville, Robertson Co. TN. Shepard Cem.; m. SAMUEL JESSE SHEPARD, June 16, 1906, Montgomery Co TN..

Notes for FRANCES NORRID MORRIS:

Frances Nard Morris Shepard was born November 06, 1890 in Chapmansboro, TN. in Cheatham Co. to John Thomas Morris and Lou Etta Carter Morris. Her father was a farmer at that time. Frances could read and write and completed the 6th grade according to the 1900 cences taken in Cheatham Co. Frances was one of five children that her parents had. Two of Lou Etta's children died shortly after birth, so Frances was the oldest. Their living children at that time were Frances, Elizabeth Olivia, and Walter B., who all were living at the time of Lou Etta's death, Which was in 1900 of TB when Frances was only 9 years old.

The following was told to me by her daughter, Margaret Holt. Frances had to work hard trying to take care of her brother and sister. Frances would walk a mile to get her sister milk to drink (Lizzie stayed on the bottle until her 2nd year). Walter was stricken with Muscular Dystrophy and was very sick and did die at the early age of 16. Frances enjoyed pulling Walter around on a wagon. John Thomas kept his kids together for awhile. He remarried a girl named Maggie shortly after Lou Etta's death. He started building houses and barns around this time. Frances and Maggie didn't get along very well, so Frances was sent to stay with  Mrs. Hanes who lived in Stroudsville, TN. Robertson Co. when she was 12 years old. The Hanes would beat and knock Frances around and would work her too hard. While packing water for Mrs. Hanes from a pond, Frances met Samuel Jesse Shepard who was fishing to whom she later marries. Frances didn't stay long at the Hanes place as John Thomas  came and took her to live with a Mr. and Mrs. Stinnett in Springfield TN. Mr. Stinnett was a mail carrier. Frances lived with the Stinnett's for 1 year and while there, was very happy, probably one of the happiest times of her life. They bought her new clothes and took her to church. After the year with the Stinnett's , Frances had to move back home to help take care of Lizzie and Walter who was getting sicker. Frances again had a hard time getting along with Maggie, who was only 4 years older.

Frances started seeing Samuel Jesse Shepard again when they moved to Robertson Co. and they married June 16, 1906. They lived a short while with her father and then went to live with Samuel Jesse's father, Samuel Franklin and mother Mary Ann for about 6 years. During this time Frances had four children and worked out on the farm when she could. Then Frances and Samuel Jesse moved out. Frances in all bore 11 children, two died shortly after birth and her oldest child lived to be about 6 months old. The other eight lived fairly long lives. While still living Frances had 19 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, which all called her Mammie or Mam. Frances had to work hard to take care of the kids and help Pap (Samuel Jesse) with the farming. Frances would sometimes walk to Stack's Store to catch a bus into town, which would mean a 6 mile walk. During World War II she would walk to Stacks for 1 stick of butter which was all that was allowed at the time. She made her own soap until the 1950's. She did all the cooking on a woodstove until the 1960's,until her daughter Margaret Holt bought her a stove and refrigerator. She had no running water and would have to pack water from the well.

At the age of 49, Frances was left a widow. Samuel Jesse died August 6, 1940 leaving her with 6 children at home. Frances raised crops and sold eggs and chickens to make a living for herself and children. Her children call her Mam and her grand children called her Mammie.

Her son Samuel Jr. Shepard (John) made the statement that his mother was the hardest working woman  he ever knew.   Her family loved her very, very much.

Frances lost her first grandchild at the age of 15 - Jesse James Holt from Muscular Dystrophy, the same disease her brother - Walter died from.   Her daughter Mabel, died at the age of 51 of TB and an enlarged heart. Frances drew only $41.00 a month from Social Security at age 62. Until about a year before she died she still helped farm and raised a garden. Frances was about 5 feet tall and never weighed more than 140 pounds. At her death she weighed 63 pounds. She had red hair, blue eyes, and would cackle when she laugh. She didn't have much time for what she really enjoyed doing, but when she got a chance she liked walking to visit people, blackberry picking and quilting. Up until about a year before she died, Frances could walk up to 8 to 10 miles a day.

Frances had a appendix operation about 6 months before she slipped and broke her hip. Her son  Jim was living at home when she fell and broke her hip. She was cracking walnuts on the porch and stepped upon to the porch and fell. She layed there a pretty good while before she got help. Frances died July 7, 1967 at her youngest son's home, Samuel Jr., while there in Port Royal, TN.

She went to the Oakwood Church when she was a young lady but later became a member of the Trinity Baptist Church. She would go to church with the children of Samuel Jr (John) and they loved it. Frances is buried beside her husband, Samuel Jesse Shepard in the Shepard's Graveyard in Adams, TN.  Robertson Co. She lived in Tennessee all her life and was truly loved by all of her family...

Samuel Jesse Shepard was born December 27, 1883. Samuel J. had eight years of education. Jesse was the fourth child of seven children and was the third of the four sons that his parents, Samuel Franklin and Mary Ann Stroud had.

Samuel Jesse married Francis Nard Morris, daughter of John Thomas and Lou Etta Carter on June 16, 1906 in Montgomery  County, Tennessee. The marriage was officiated by Todd Davis and witnessed by Luther Ogg in a place across the street from where a Mr. Carney Holt lived.

Of the eleven children that Jesse had, three died at an early age and the other eight lived long lives. His children called Pap. ***See family Group Records for Samuel Jesse Shepard for a listing of his children, their spouses and children. When Samuel Jesse and Frances got married, they lived with John Thomas Morris for a while and then lived with Samuel Franklin Shepard for six years where they had their first four children. Samuel Franklin  sold his farm so Samuel Jesse and Frances moved to the other side of Stroudsville, Tennessee into a log house and later to their final home, which was built by Frances's father, John Thomas Morris. This is where Samuel Jesse died. Jesse gave $1,100.00 for the 50 acres of land where the last homeplace stood. Jewel, Margaret, and Samuel Jr. (John) and Harvey were born there.

Samuel Jesse's son John said that Jesse really liked playing baseball and played alot of cards when the weather was bad. He really liked getting out with the kids in the community to play ball and also, liked to go fox hunting. He owned two cars, a 1931 Ford which was a black A-Model which cost $600.00 then traded it in for a black 1934 Chevrolet. Samuel Jesse was known as a hard working man  when there was work to be done. He raised tobacco, corn, hay, and wheat and farmed all his life. He loved to go hunting and has a very good shot. He once had 10 buttets and shot 9 birds and 1 quail. He owned a 16 ga. shotgun that he got from Charley Frye. His son John got the gun and gave it to his son Johnny.

Samuel Jesse was a member of Stroudsville Church. He died August 6,1940 at home leaving Frances, 49 years old with six children still at home. His two oldest were already married. He had one grandchild named Jesse James Holt who later died of muscular dystrophy at age 15. Jesse had a sore on his hip that would not heal and some of the family thought he could have died of blood poisoning. He caught pneumonia as a cause of that.

Samuel Jesse is buried at the Shepard's Graveyard beside his wife Frances, who died July 1967 in Robertson County, Tennessee. In the community of Stroudsville, where he resided all his life.
