VINCENT VASS 1827 Declared in his pension application in Tipton Co, TN on 3 Apr 1827, that he was born Jun 1755 in Essex County, VA, that his father moved to Spotsylvania Co, VA, that he and Samuel ARNOLD (who died in the War) were baptized by Rev. John WALLER of sd county and state... that Peter STUBBLEFIELD was a Lieut. in Capt. John KEMP's Co, 1st Regt, commanded by Col George Gibson...Little York Williamsburg....Philadelphia, Valley Forge...regiment revolted as their 3 yr commissions for in-state only... that the Continental Congress responded by raising pay from $5 to $8 and offering bounty land... Officers still refused to go...under command of Gen'l De Marquis de Lafayette [sic]. The enemy evacuated Philadelphia and Genl Washington pursued, Monmouth, Stony Point, then to Harrisburg, Granville NC where his half-brother, Philip [surname not given] was serving in Barracks. The plantation was that of Col Jos. TAYLOR. He [VASS] became quartermaster. ...Oct. 1838 Power of Attorney to C. H. Williams, signed by VASS, Robert Mitchell, Frederick R. Smith, and in Richmond by ? BURCH. VASS died 8 Jan 1858 leaving a widow Caty VASS, w/ A. H. MARKLAND her legally auth. atty...." (Abstracted incompletely from VA RW State Pensions, VA Gen So., 1980, SHP, 1982, p. 127, by C.
