Hon. JOHN TIPTON, formerly U.S. Senator from Indiana died Logansport, April 5, 1839.

BIOGRAPHICAL DIRECTORY OF THE AMERICAN CONGRESS, 1774-1974, Washington, D.C., 1974, pages 1820-1821:

TIPTON, John, a Senator from Indiana; born near Sevierville, Sevier County, Tenn., August 14, 1786; received a limited schooling; moved to Harrison County, Ind., in 1807 and engaged in agricultural pursuits; served with the "Yellow Jackets" in the Tippecanoe campaign and subsequently attained the rank of brigadier general of militia; served as sheriff of Harrison County, Ind., 1815-1819; member of the State house of representatives 1819-1823; one of the commissioners to select a site for a new capital for Indiana in 1820; commissioner to determine the boundary line between Indiana and Illinois; appointed United States Indian agent for the Pottawatamie and Miami tribes in March 1823; laid out the city of Logansport, Ind., April 10, 1828; elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate on December 9, 1831, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of James Noble; reelected in 1832 and served from January 3, 1832, to March 3, 1839; due to poor health declined to be a candidate for reelection in 1838, died in Logansport, Cass County, Ind., on April 5, 1839; interment in Mount Hope Cemetery.

It appearing by affidavit that all the above named defendants in this cause are not residents of the state of Tennessee, so that the process of this court cannot be served upon them: it is ordered that publication be made for three successive weeks in the Western Weekly Review, a newspaper published in the town of Franklin, requiring said defendants to appear at the next term of this court at the court house in the town of Franklin, requiring said defendants to appear at the next term of this court at the court house in the town of Franklin, on the 4th Monday in October next, then and there to plead, answer or demur to complainant’s bill, or the same will be taken for confessed as to them, and set for hearing ex parte.

The bill states, that complainant at April session 1837 of Williamson county court, qualified as executor of the will of Nathaniel Griffin, dec'd.; and as such executor, has proceeded to pay the debts due from, and to collect those owing to said estate: he has also paid over the specific legacies mentioned in the will; that on settlement with the clerk of the county court, a balance is found in his hands of five thousand nine hundred and eleven dollars eighty three cents. This sum by the will is to be divided among the brothers and sisters of testator; -- that complainant has been informed that defendants are the brothers and sisters of testator, or the legal representatives of such brothers and sisters, but knows nothing of his own knowledge; -- and prays that defendants may interplead and establish their claims in this court. In order that complainant may pay the funds in his hands to those entitled; -- that an account be taken of his administration and complainant discharged from the trusts of the will, &c.
