PREFATORY REMARKS

The NASHVILLE CHRISTIAN ADVOCATE was for many years the official periodical of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, published in Nashville, Tennessee. It enjoyed an extensive readership and distribution. While events and personalities and religious writings regarding this denomination were foremost in the periodical, there was a wide variety of secular news and literary content. Among the most popular features were the obituaries of church leaders, lay-folk and sometimes of persons other than Methodists.

For persons interested in the history of their particular Methodist congregations there was a wealth of information given about many churches/congregations in the "Notes and Personals" section of the periodical. This is a valuable source of information for persons interested in working on the histories of congregations of interest to them.

The earnest genealogical researcher will want to obtain copies of the death notices and other information from the CHRISTIAN ADVOCATE, and particularly copies of photographs, from the original issues because the microfilm copies have very poor quality for photographs. These are available, in most instances, from the Methodist Library, Drew University, Madison Avenue, Madison, New Jersey 07940.
