GRAY FAMILY CEMETERY

This cemetery is located in Stewart County, Tennessee on a high cliff overlooking the Tennessee River near Paris Landing State Park. Immediately after crossing the Tennessee River bridge, going east, a gravel road turns to the left. The cemetery is easily seen from the highway. The cemetery is so high above the river it is a perfect place to view the river and surrounding area. This is a nine grave cemetery, very neatly kept and surrounded by an old, iron fence.

The chief marker is that of James Gray. The marker is a regulation size, Gran[ite?], reproduction of a Pulpit. Complete with cover and tassels. Atop the pulpit is a Bible. The front of the marker reads:

Aug 9, 1868

At the lower right hand corner "Marker by Wells & Rhea, Madisonville, Ky."

The back of the marker carries the following:

"A Captain in the War of 1812, Commanding a Company at the Battle of New Orleans. Receiving an honorable discharge. Also three others as Commander of posts on the frontier. A member of the Tennessee Legislature eight years. Served two years in the Convention. Joined the church in 1840. Ordained a Minister of the Gospel and served as Moderator of the Western District Association a number of years. To the joy of the body, continued in the ministry until near his death."

Andrew Jackson Gray

"The pains of death are past. Labor and sorrows cease, and life long war foreclosed at last. His Soul is found in peace. Gone but not forgotten"

Rebecca Gray

Born January 19, 1851
Died November 24, 1928
"Having finished life’s duty she now sweetly rests."

A. J. Gray
1882-1942

Infact daughter of A. J. and Edna Gray
1915

Three graves with. sandstone markers.
