HALE, Jeremiah, b. 1810 in Eastern Tennessee, and his brother HALE, Turner, b. 1812 in Tennessee (parents listed as born in Virginia)

Handwritten margin notes: In the sentence above the words "his brother" was struck through and "not brothers" was written in above. At the bottom of the page was added "Turner Hale-son of Ogborne & Lavinia Hale, Hawkins Co. TN. Ogborne was son of Thomas & Prudence Hale of Halifax Co. N.C. (orig. from Norfolk Co VA)."

Jeremiah HALE served briefly in Missouri Home Guard Unit during Civil War: Sons Elisha B. and James M. died during Civil War in Union forces. Son William served in Stone Co., Mo. Home Guards, but not pensioned. Son Elijah Martin stated he was born in Monroe (County?) Tennessee when he was enrolled in Co. M., 16th Mo. Cav. Regiment. (Union Forces). Son-in-law Hiram Henry JONES served as Comissary Sergeant, G. I. Cos. 1st Arkansas Cavalry during Civil War (Union Forces).

Jeremiah HALE died 4 September 1890; wife Sinthy died 28 October 1861, both are buried in Hale Cemetery, 1 mi. west of Oak Grove, Carroll County, Arkansas.

HALE Turner m. Sarah BUTLER, dau. Reuben BUTLER? (will of Elias BUTLER) and Susan ______ b. 1797 in North Carolina. Susan m 2nd William MORRIS b. 1792 in Tennessee. From will of Elias BUTLER, children of the first marriage listed as: Susannah, Lucy and Sarah. Affidavits in National Archives show a daughter Nancy BURKET, b. 1825 in N.C. m, 2nd Jades MARTIN, a preacher much older than she. Nancy deceased prior to 1860, resided in Missouri.

Sara BUTLER HALE born 1820 in North Carolina (Montgomery Co. seems to have been residence from Revolutionary War data). Children of Susan _______ BUTLER and second husband William MORRIS:

Jordan MORRIS may have been killed by bushwhackers during the Civil War. Francis M. and Martin Morris served in Union Forces during Civil War. Francis served in Co. H., 15th Mo. Cav.; Marion in-the same unit. Both died in Oklahoma (additional data available). The children of Jordan MORRIS and LYDD were reared by Turner and Sarah Butler HALE.

Susan and William MORRIS resided in 1850 in Barry Co., Missouri, 77/77 census 1850, White River Twp. In 1860 living in Stone Co., Mo. with children.

Would like data on Susan and William MORRIS; seem to be listed in 1840 in census of Carroll County, Tennessee.

 

HALE, Turner, Earliest date: 1850 Census, Carroll County, Tennessee: 14th Civil Diet. 1642/1642 living near John BOW, John, Hampton and Elias NORDEN, Richard THOMAS, and Joseph M. MORRIS. To Barry County, Missouri prior to Jan. 1854, where he bought the land of his brother-in-law located in White River Twp. on the Kings River. He has not been located in 1840 census, although the 1850 census lists eldest son, Elias Ogborne, as having been born in Mississippi in 1839.

1. HALE, Elias Ogborne, b. Miss. 1839 m. WILLIAMS, Sarah J. in 1856. 2nd. MORRIS, Sarah Elizabeth. Died of heart attack or something similiar 27 Feb. 1892. Served in Union Forces Civil War, as farrier, Co. G & H 1st Ark. Cav. Buried on HALE farm, graves removed to Hickerson Cemetery, Kiinberling City, Stone County, Mo. about 1960, it is believed. Considerable data on this family.

2. HALE, Susan G., b. 1843, Carroll Co., Tenn., m. 1st MARTIN, Daniel, divorced; m. 2nd PHILLIPS, William Henderson, 17 June 1866. (Henderson son of Anderson and Sarah Phillips, b. Va.). Wm. Henderson b. 1846, killed 12 March 1892 in Barry Co., Mo. Susan died 20 Jan., 1922 Eucha, Delaware Co., Okla. Considerable data on descendents. Henderson served in Co. H., 15th Mo. Cav.

Handwritten note: "These people lived at Farmville Yuma today."

3. HALE, Lavinia (Viney) D., b. 1845, Carroll Co., Tenn. m. 1st CLARK, Elijah (1846-ca. 1872); m. 2nd ca. 1875, Hans Jordan SIMMONS, b. Barry Co., Mo. 1847. Following Lavinia's death, he married Mrs. Rebecca LEONARD HOBBS. Jordan SIMMONS buried on Hale Farm, WhiteRiver Twp. Barry Co.

4. HALE, William Thomas (Tom) b. 9 Feb. 1847 Carroll Co., Tenn. m., 1st HuldaP aralee WILLIAM, divorced, m. 2nd Louisa Jane GADDY. Tom HALE served in Union Forces, Co. H., 15 Reg. Mo. Volunteers. d. 1 Dec. 1924 at Sarcoxie, Mo., buried Viola Cemetery, Barry Co., Missouri.

5. HALE, Zachariah Taylor, b. 4 Feb. 1849, Carroll Co., Tenn., m. PHILLIPS, Sarah, dau. Anderson and Sarah PHILLIPS, a sister to William Henderson, b. 1852 in Va. on 1 March 1868, Barry Co., Missouri, by Turner HALE, J.P. Believed to have died in Yell Co., Ark, and be buried near Ola, Ark. Need data this family.

6. HALE, Allen Justus, b. ca 1851 Carroll Co., Tenn., m. BUTLER, Ausan, dau. of Joel BUTLER, son of Neely, son of Elias. Descendant Neosho, Newton Co., Mo., in 1920, 1930 period.

7. HALE, Nancy Ann., b. 12 Jan1854, Barry Co., Mo., White River Twp., m. 5 Sept. 1878, George Washington MCCULLOUGH (son of William C. and Mary H. TYNER MCCULLOUGH) May 16, 1860-2 April 1906; m. 2nd SPARGER, Charles. (Grandmother of compiler) Data complete this family.

8. HALE, John b. 1856, Barry Co., Mo.; no subsequent date, must have died young.

9. HALE, Martin B., b. 1 Sept. 1860, Barry Co., Mo., m. HAYWOOD, Lovie Adaline, 6 Dec. 1890. d. Yell Co., Ark. (Ola) 5 Nov. 1900. Lovie Adaline and two children returned to Carroll Co., Tenn. where one daughter presently resides: Rudy Hale BURGESS, Route 1, Yuma, Tennessee 38390. Complete data. Handwritten note: "d. 1980."

There is a legend the HALE family are part Indian, but none, so far as is known made any effort to get head rights. Families coming to Carroll County, Arkansas, Stone and Barry County, Missouri with HALES were BUTLER, BOYD, SCATES, WILLIAMS, QUEEN, MATLOCK, SAMMONS, DAWSON, JONES, MORRIS, AND KEELAND among others.

Joel HALE, age 28 b. Tenn. in Carroll Co. Ark, census 1860; Job HALE, age 75 b. Va., and Kiziah, 64, his wife, b. N. Carolina; with William HALE, age 49, b. Tenn, and Ruchana, 36, his wife b. Ind. No relationship known to above families. Joel HALE served in Union forces, Civil War.
